C . D . A . C . B 第一篇 The surface of the Earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean. From it we have learned most of what we know about space. Recently, we have waded a little out to sea, enough to dampen our toes or, at most, wet our ankles. The water seems inviting. The ocean calls. The dimensions of the cosmos are so large that using familiar units of distance, such as meters or miles, chosen for their utility on Earth, would make little sense. Instead we measure distance with the speed of light. In one second a beam of light travels 186,000 miles, nearly 300,000 kilometers, o r seven times around the Earth. In eight minutes it will travel from the Sun to the Earth. We can say the Sun is eight light-minutes away. In a year, it crosses nearly ten trillion kilometers, about six trillion miles, of intervening space. That unit of length, the distance light goes in a year, is called a light year. It measures not time but distances, enormous distances. The Earth is a place. It is by no means the only place. It is not even a typical place. No planet or star or galaxy can be typical because most of the cosmos is empty. The only typical place is within the vast, cold universal vacuum, the ever-lasting night of intergalactic space, so strange and desolate that by comparison, planets and stars and galaxies seem achingly rare and lovely. If we were randomly inserted into the cosmos, the chance that we would find ourselves on or near a planet would be less than one in a billion trillion. Worlds are precious. 1. Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the passage? A) The Cosmic Ocean B) Sunbeams C) The Speed of Light D) Random Numbers 2. If the author’s analogy in the first paragraph were extended, which of the following means of transportation would be most appropriate for a trip into space? A) A train. B) An airplane. C) A wagon. D) A ship. 3. It can be inferred from the passage that earthly units of measure are not used for intergalactic distance because these units of measure are ________. A) unfamiliar to astronomers B) too smaller C) inaccurate for measuring distance D) underestimated by scientists 4. According to the passage, how long does it take light to travel from the Sun to the Earth? A) An hour B) A year. C) Eight minutes. D) Seven days. 5. According to the passage, where would one find the most ordinary place in the cosmos? A) On a star. B) On a planet. C) In the ocean. D) In the intergalactic space.班级 学号姓名---------------------------------------------装-----------------------------------------订----------------------------------------线-------------------------------------------- 装订线以 内不准作任何 标记第二篇The United States population is growing older. In 1987, 12 percent of Americans were 65 years old or older, compared with 8 percent in 1950. Population experts at the U.S. Bureau of the Census expect this percentage to continue to rise gradually, reaching 14 percent in 2010, then to skyrocket during the next 20 years, reaching21 percent by 2030. This “graying of America” has generated concerns about whetherthe best really is yet to be, about how well off tomorrow’s elderly will be. There also are questions about the impact of an aging population on the rest of society. The graying of America has two causes. First, advances in medical care have enable people to live longer. In the United States in 1900, the average life expectancy at birth was 47.7 years. By, 1985, the latest year for which figures are available, it has climbed to 74.7 years.Second, the U.S. birthrate rose in the mid-1900s, interrupting a long, slow decline.A dramatic increase occurred during this brief rise. From 1945 to 1947, the rate jumpedfrom 20.4 births for every 1,000 people to 26.6. In 1957, the birthrate was still high - 25.3 - but then began to decline. The birthrate dropped to the 1933 level of18.4 in 1966, and by 1985, was 15.7. Most experts see little change in the downwardtrend of the birthrate in the foreseeable future.1. What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?A) To bring attention to the needs of the elderly.B) To contrast birthrates and life expectancy rates.C) To explain how and why the American population is agingD) To show the percentages of age groups in general population2. During which period of time will the percentage of Americans 65 years old or olderincrease the most? A) 1970-1990 B) 1990-2010 C) 2010-2030 D)2030-20503. In the first paragraph, the phrase “this graying of America” refers to ________.A) the uncertainty of the future for older AmericansB) the effects of population on the health of the elderlyC) statistics released by the U.S. Bureau of the CensusD) the increasing number of elderly people in the population4. About how long did it take the birthrate to return to the 1933 level?A) 20 years B) 30 years C) 40 years D) 50 years5. Which of the following conclusions about the birthrate is supported by the passage?A) The long-range decline in the birthrate will continue in the next century.B) Another dramatic increase in the birthrate will occur before the 215 century.C) The birthrate will continue to vary greatly.D) An increase in the birthrate depends mainly on advances in medical care.第 6 页共10 页第 7 页 共 10 页第三篇 The whole industrial process, which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environment balance, or the ecological balance as it is also known. Many of these waste products can be prevented or disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new goods are produced and made complex, there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of, for example the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on their land to feed our ever increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used, in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizers cannot restore the balance. Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if only companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help to solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives. (61.4%) 1. What do you think will destroy the environment balance? A) Waste products .B) The whole industrial process. C) Many of the goods we use. D) Some machines we need and use in our daily life. 2. The waste products from nuclear power stations are ________. A) new and complex B) new and dangerous C) hard to be disposed of D) easy to be disposed of 3. Problems in agriculture are caused by ________. A) the use of artificial fertilizers B) the land itself which is becoming worn out C) the land which is being used too heavily D) the introduction of new farming methods 4. Food packages, bottles and tins for drinks can cause ________. A) air pollution B) both a litter problem and a waste of resources C) excess consumption D) unnecessary buying 5. Which of the following is not suggested in the passage? A) People have been buying too many things. B) People consume far too many things than are necessary. C) People put away waste products carelessly. D) No one can help to solve the problem of pollution and waste.班级 学号姓名---------------------------------------------装-----------------------------------------订----------------------------------------线--------------------------------------------装订线以 内不准作任何 标记第四篇Some psychologists maintain that mental acts such as thinking are not performed in the brain alone, but that one’s muscles also participate. It may be said that we think with our muscles in somewhat the same way that we listen to music with our bodies. You surely are not surprised to be told that you usually listen to music not only with your ears but with your whole body. Few people can listen to music that is more or less familiar without moving their body or, more specifically, some part of their body. Often when one listens to a symphonic (交响乐的) concert on the radio, he is tempted to direct the orchestra (乐队) even though he knows there is a competent conductor on the job.Strange as this behavior may be, there is a very good reason for it. One cannot derive all possible enjoyment from music unless he participates, so to speak, in its performance. The listener “feels” himself into the music with more or less pronounced motions of the body. The muscles of the body actually participate in the mental process of thinking in the same way, but this participation is less obvious because it is less pronounced.1.T he process of thinking is different from that of listening in that __________.A) the former is more serious B) the latter is more enjoyableC) muscle participation is less apparent to the formerD) the former is a mental process while the latter not2.S ome psychologists believe that thinking is __________.A)only a mental process in the brainB)much more of a physical process than a mental actionC)a process performed by the entire bodya process involving the muscles as well as the brain3.T he “pronounced motions” of the body is a music listener’s way of __________.A)enjoying and participating in the musicB)expressing how he likes he musicC)directing the orchestra playing the musicD)performing with his body4.P eople enjoy the music fully with __________.A) their ears B) their hands directing C) their body movements D) theireyes and ears5.T he best possible title of the passage could be __________.A) Music Appreciation B) How Muscles Participate in Mental ActsC) Thinking Process D) Participation in Music Performance四、完形填空“The average woman takes in only two thirds of the recommended daily ___1___ for iron,” notes another expert. “For a woman who already has a poor iron ___2___ , any additional iron loss from exercise may be enough to tip her over the edge into a more serious deficiency,” notes the expert.第8 页共10 页Exercise can ___3___iron loss through ___4___mechanisms. A dog can be a happy addition to your family, but if you choose the wrong kind of dog, it can cause a lot of trouble.Families should sit down and thoroughly discuss the problems involved before buying a dog. Even if the children in your family are the ones who want the dog, the parents are ones who are really responsible for seeing that the animal is properly cared for. If you don’t know much about dogs, it’s a good idea to go to the library or the ASPCA (美国动物保护协会)for books about various kinds of dogs, as well as books about how to train a puppy. In reading about the different kinds, you should know that a dog described as very alert may be too jumpy and bouncy. When a book describes a dog as an ideal hunting dog, it probably means that the dog won’t be happy living in a small apartment. Dogs of different kinds vary in popularity as the years go by. One of the most popular dogs these days is the German shepherd. This is because it provides protection as well as companionship. The family should be warned that these dogs grow up to be very big, and may be too powerful for children to handle. If space is limited, a toy dog may be a good choice. These dogs are very small and easy to train. They don’t need to be walked daily, since they can exercise in the space available in the home.1. They come to watch the ―Indy 500.‖ This 500-mile race is the most famous of all auto races. The motor race track is on the spot where an old farm once stood. A man named Carl Fisher bought the land in 1909. The car was a new invention at that time. Hardly anyone took the idea of car racing seriously. Yet Fisher pushed ahead with his plan to build a track. In two years the track was finished. It took 450 workers, 300 mules, and seven giant steamrollers to do the job. First, the ground was made perfectly flat. Then gravel was spread over the two-and-a-half-mile track. The top layer was made of crushed stone and tar. CVery old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes into contact with them. Their values --- this can be repeated too often --- are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of ? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car: it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. And at what point should you cease to treat the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by pursuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunity, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.1. It is implied in Paragraph 1 that ______.A . very old people enjoy living with their relativesB . social services have nothing to do with very old peopleC. very old people would like to live alone so that they can have more personal freedomD . very old people are able to keep their rooms very clean 2. D 2. B 3. A 4. D 5. CSeveral factors are commonly associated with college suicides (自杀), the most frequent of which is academic failure. Failure not only brings the disappointment and disapproval of parents, but destroys personal self-confidence as well. The second leading cause of college suicide is the end of a love affair. When romance ends, there is more than just disappointment; there is the feeling of being rejected and abandoned, the complete loss of self-esteem (自尊). Next, college suicides often involve the shy students who, lacking social contacts, tend to be consumed by their problems. Finally, despite the alarming college suicide rate, many colleges offer little or no on-campus therapy for emotional problems. The suicide rate rises again in middle age when the male realizes that his career goals have not been achieved and are in fact now unattainable (无法实现的). The middle-aged woman may turn to suicide upon the departure from home of her children, after which she may no longer feel useful and needed. Finally, the suicide rate reaches its peak among the elderly, who today suffer from a host of emotionally crippling influences. Our society now emphasizes youth and young ideas. After a forced retirement at age 70, many people feel useless, lonely, bored, and frustrated. In addition, they may suffer great financial insecurity, physical pain, or may have terminal illnesses. For persons over age 85, the suicide rate is 26 per 100,000.1. DBecause smoking is a form of addiction, 80 percent of smokers who quit usually experience some withdrawal symptoms. These may include headache, light-headedness, and chest pains. Psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, short-term depression, and inability to concentrate, may also appear. The main psychological symptom is increased irritability. People become so irritable, in fact, that they say they feel “like killing somebody.” Yet there is no evidence that quitting smoking leads to physical violence. Some people seem to lose all their energy and drive, wanting only to sleep. Others react in exactly the opposite way, becoming so over energized they can't find enough activity to burn off their excess energy. For instance, one woman said she cleaned out all her closets completely and was ready to go next door to start on her neighbor's. Both these extremes, however, eventually level off. The symptoms may be intense for two or three days, but within 10 to 14 days after quitting, most subside. The truth is that after people quit smoking, they have more energy, they generally will need less sleep, and feel better about themselves.Quitting smoking not only extends the ex-smoker's life, but adds new happiness and meaning to one's current life. Most smokers state that immediately after they quit smoking, they start noticing dramatic differences in their overall health and vitality.Quitting is beneficial at any age, no matter how long a person has been smoking. The death rate of an ex-smoker decreases after quitting. If the patient quits before a serious disease has developed, his/her body may eventually be able to restore itself almost completely.1. Which of the following is the main psychological symptom of smokers who quit? A) Being light-headed. B) Being anxious. C) Being easily annoyed. D) Being violent.2. Why does the author offer the example of one woman in Paragraph 2? A) To tell us that smokers will be over-energetic.B) To indicate that smokers have to participate in some activities to help quit smoking.C) To show that the smokers who quit will go to extremes.D) To claim that smokers will be very helpful once they quit smoking. 3. How do most smokers feel immediately after they quit smoking?A) They have better health and more vitality. B) They find that life is meaningless.C) They need more sleep than before. D) They visit their neighbors more often.班级 学号 姓名---------------------------------------------装-----------------------------------------订----------------------------------------线--------------------------------------------装 订 线 以 内 不 准 作 任 何 标 记4. At school, you had been fed cereal laced with radioactive chemicals so scientists could learn more about the digestive system. Because the food was radioactive, scientists could easily trace its path through the body.Scientists now know that exposure to large amounts of radiation can cause cancer,a group of diseases in which bodily cells grow wildly out of control. Some peoplewho were part of radiation studies later developed cancer and blame the radiation for causing the cancer. Others are worried the radiation will some day make them sick. Some doctors say that, in many cases, such fears are unjustified because the radiation does used in the experiments were too small to cause harm. They also say that since the dangers of radiation were less well understood then than they are now, even researchers who used high doses of radiation didn’t do anything wro ng.Some critics claim that no excuse is acceptable for not informing subjects about the nature of an experiment and giving them a chance to refuse to participate. Everyone likes a perso n w ith good manners but no one likes a person with bad manners. "Y es", you may say , " but what are good manners? How do I know what to do and what not to do?"People all over the world agree that being well-mannered really means being kind and helping others, especially to those older or weaker than ourselves. If you remember this, you will not go very far wrong. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.He never laughs at people when they are in trouble.Instead, he tries to help them. Wide spread use of written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated becaus e more books could be printed and distributed. Together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge. How much paper do you use every year? Probably you cannot answer that question quickly. In 1900 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person a year. Countrie s like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries.Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on a kind of material made of a water plant. Europeans used parchment for many hundreds of years. So people put a circle around it like this 6⊙3.Then people could see the dot. They remembered the space. At last, only the circle around the dot was used. It was like a zero. So we decided to try making afew tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.”John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don’t have time to take a course, there are books tell you how you can do thing yourself.6. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invit ation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the w orld, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from dif ferent cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for ex ample. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. However, the idea for this kind of free library ended when Bray died in 1730. In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and some friends star ted the first subscription library in the United States. In a subscription library people pay money to become members, but they may borrow the books without paying again. In the United States, every child had a free education. ABDCDCathy and Wayne are in their late 20’s, have been married five years, and are childless. The last time a member of Cathy’s family asked, ―When are you going to start a family?‖ her answer was, ―We’re a family!‖Cathy and Wayne belong to a growing number of young married couples who are deciding not to have children. A recent survey showed that in the last five years the percentage of wives aged 25 to 29 who did not want children had almost doubled. What lies behind this decision which seems to fly in the face of biology and society?Perhaps the most publicly outspoken childless couple are Ellen Peck and her husband William. They are not against parenthood but against the social pressures that push people into parenthood whether it is what they really want or not.―It’s a life-style choice,‖ Ellen says. ―We chose freedom and spontaneity (自发性), privacy (清静) and leisure. It’s also a question of where you want to give your efforts within your own family or in the larger community. This generation faces serious questions about the continuity of life on earth as well as its quality. Our grandchildren may have to buy tickets to see the last redwoods (红杉) or line up to get their oxygen ration (氧气量). There are men who complain about being caught in a traffic jam for hours on their way home to their five kids but can’t make the association between the children and the traffic jam. In a world seriously threatened by the consequences of overpopulation we’re concerned with making life without children acceptable and respectable. Too many children are born as a result of cultural pressure. And the results show up in the statistics on divorce and child-abuse.‖1. (二) DACBC ―I ask you to drink to his health as a young man full of the sprit of adventure who has lit up the world with a flash of courage.‖ With these words the British Minister of Air turned and raised his glass to the young man who sat before him – a young man who, only a month before, was completely unknown. Yet on that summer day in 1927 his name was on the world ’s lips – Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly the Atlantic alone. He had been an air mail pilot, flying back and forth between Chicago and the city of St. Louis. Determined to win the $25,000 prize offered by a fellow-American for the first flight from New York to Paris, Lindbergh had persuaded a group of St. Louis businessmen to finance the building of a special plane for them. The news that Lindbergh intended to fly the Atlantic alone was received with disbelief. ―The plane would never fly,‖ people said. It would run out of fuel. It had only a single engine. Lloyd ’s of London refused to insure the flight. Men called Lindbergh the ―flying fool.‖ But on May 20th, 1927, just after ten to eight in the morning, Lindbergh ’s ―spirit of St. Louis,‖ heavily laden with fuel, struggled into air from a New York airfield. For several hours the weight to the petrol prevented the young pilot from flying more than a few feet above the wave-top. Night came, and thick fog covered up the stars. Lindbergh flew steadily on, hoping that his course was the right one. He struggled to keep awake, checking the fuel all the time to keep his mind active. Throughout the next day the ―Spirit of St. Louis ‖ flew on over the seeming limitless sea. Then a fishing boat appeared, and an hour later, land. It was Ireland. Lindbergh set a compass course for Paris. By ten o ’clock the light of France ’s capital were shining beneath him. Tired, unshaven, suddenly hungry, the ―flying fool ‖ came on to Le Bourget Airport, and landed in front of a huge crowd of wildly cheering people. After 34 hours of continuous piloting, the flight of 3600miles was over. 1. The British Minister Of Air _________. A) Praised Lindbergh for his intelligence B) encouraged Lindbergh to be adventurous C) congratulated Lindbergh for his bravery D) warned Lindbergh to be sensible 2. ―His name was on the world ’s lips ‖ means _________. The discovery was made by doctors at Harvard University. They began by studying the clock-like group of cells in the brains of monkeys.Dr. Martin Moore Ede and Dr. Ralph Leidick recorded when during the day the monkeys ate, drank and slept. They found that most of the monkeys did the same things at about the same time each day. Then the doctors operated on the monkeys. They destroyed the tiny group of brain cells which they believed controlled the timing of activities. After the operation they found that the animals ate, drank, and slept the same amounts as before. But they did these things at very different times each day. There no longer seemed to be a clock within them that told them when it was time to eat, drink or sleep.Scientists could not do the same kinds of experiments with humans. But they were able to find evidence of a similar group of cells in the human brain.Dr. Charles Seizler and the two Harvard researchers looked through many years of medical records to find patients who had tumors (肿瘤) or brain damage in that area of the brain. The records showed that such patients had the same kind of eating, drinking. and sleeping problems as the monkeys whose timer cells had been destroyed. The scientists believe the cells above the optic nerves (视神经) are only one of two biological clocks in the brain. They said they had not yet found the one which governs changes in thebody’s t emperature.1. As we came to the Pont Alexandre III, the cab slowed down, for the traffic light was red against, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red light in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights.―You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a veteran like you, breaking the law and endangering you life that way.‖ I protested. He looked at me astonished. ― Ashamed of myself? I am a law-abiding citizen and have no desire to get killed either.‖ He cut me off before I could protest.―No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?‖―Certainly.‖I replied. ―It’s a stop signal and means that traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.‖―Half-right,‖ said the driver, ―but incomplete. It is only an automatic stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during our trip? Of course not. I slowed down at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the streets at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a dumb animal because an automatic, brainless machine turns red every seconds? No, monsieur,‖ he thundered, hitting the door with a huge fist. I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. It would be a sin against nature to surrender them to the dictates of a machine. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamp do my thinking for me. Good night, monsieur.‖Is this bad, is this good? Frankly I No longer am sure. I never doubted that it was wrong to drive through a red light, but now I find my old Anglo-Saxon standards somewhat shaken. (82%)第8 页共11 页21. They hoped that governments would act quickly in order to “conserve” nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1, 300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland, but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these things. If we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves. What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask, “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through a record called “No one’s going to change our world”. It was made by the Beat les, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals. I . “No one’s going to change our world” was _____C___. A) an important book published in 1970 B) an idea that nobody would accept C) a record calling on people to conserve nature D) a rule worked out by the United Nations 2. What is the most important thing for us to do to save our world? D A) We should plant more trees and flowers. B) We should clean the banks of our rivers. We have made medical advances that allow people to live longer than ever before, but we do not seem to know what to do with them after we have saved their lives. Too little allowance is made for the person who is no longer earning a living, who cannot walk long distances or drive a car, or who may have physical or mental disabilities that keep him from communicating with others. The institutional care we give our older people is a good reflection of the overall attitude of our society toward the aged. In the past few years, nursing homes have received wide attention as being, meaningless places where old people often have little else to do but wait for the end of their lives. Senile wards in mental hospitals are even worse. One of the most shocking things about nursing homes has been the unwillingness of people on the outside to show earl concern for what happens in these institutions. Even people who are entrusting a parent to the care of a home rarely ask about the nurse-patient ratio, about the kinds of creative facilities or physical therapy equipment available, or even about the frequency of doctor’s visits. And the government has provided federal money without enforcing high standards of care. In fact federal standards were lowered in 1974. Therefore, in some sense our concern for the aged seems to be moving backward, not forward. This picture is in striking contrast to the treatment of venerable patriarchs and matriarchs in many societies.1.What would the most appropriate title be for the selection?A) Institutional Care B) The elderlyC) Failure of Care for the elderly D) A national Disgrace2.W hich sentence best states the main ides of the selection?A)Our society has failed to provide adequately for aged people.B)Our society is not geared for the kinds of lives the elderly must lead.C)Out treatment of aged people is in striking contrast to that of many societies.D)Government standards have been lowered, not raised, in caring for the aged.第 6 页共11 页第 7 页 共 11 页3. It is apparently very easy for sportsmen and sportswomen to get drugs. The strangest thing about the use of drugs in sports is the fact that there is no real evidence to show that they improve athletic performance. And they can cause liver cancer, and have led to the death of two world-class athletes. Now taking urine samples of athletes is practiced worldwide, yet drugtaking remains a serious problem. To combat it the Sports Council in Britain has started in-and-out-of-competition drug testing programme. Competitors were tested at random before, which means a few people were selected without knowing beforehand. This was mostly done during matches. Now, athletes can be tested when they train as well. This way the authorities will be able to catch more drug-takers, who will never know beforehand when they have to take a drug test. Many people think of drugs as something only found in chemicals. But even cough medicine, alcohol and caffeine, which is found in coffee, are considered drugs if a test shows an athlete has taken too much. Of course, an athlete is allowed to drink coffee. For some drugs, a certain amount is permitted. For other drugs, such as steroids (类固醇), any amount in urine samples leads to a ban. 1. What conclusion can we draw from the first paragraph? A) Drug-taking is a worldwide problem. B) Sportsmen can easily be suspected as drug-takers. C) Drug-taking will lead to poor performance in sports field. The company also publishes books and multimedia titles and offers electronic mail services. It has sales offices throughout the world but does virtually all of its research and development at its corporate headquarters in Redmond, Washington, U. S.In 1975 Bill Gates and Paul G. Allen, two boyhood friends from Seattle, converted BASIC, a popular mainframe programming language, for use on an early personal computer (PC), the Altair. Shortly afterward Gates and Allen founded Microsoft, deriving the name from the words “microcomputer” and “software.” During the next few years they refined BASIC and developed other programming languages. In 1980 International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) asked Microsoft to produce the essential software, or operating system, for its first personal computer, the IBM PC. Microsoft purchased an operating system from another company, modified it, and renamed it MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System). MS-DOS was released with the IBM PC in 1981. Thereafter, most manufacturers of personal computers licensed MS-DOS as their operating system, generating vast revenues for Microsoft; by the early 1990s it had sold more than 100 million copies of the program and defeated rival operating systems such as CP/M, which it displaced in the early 1980s, and later OS/2. Microsoft deepened its position in operating systems with its Windows graphical command program, whose third version, released in 1990, gained a wide following.By 1993, Windows 3.0 and its subsequent versions were selling at a rate of one million copies per month, and nearly 90 percent of the world’s PCs ran on a Microsoft operating system. In 1995 the company released Windows第8 页共11 页95, which for the first time fully integrated MSDOS with Windows and effectively matched in ease of use Apple Computer’s Macintosh OS. More and more people go online as wireless networks have brought the Internet closer and closer: it’s on our mobile phones, in our cars and TV sets, in hospital surgery rooms and in fishing boats that battle the waves of the Atlantic. And this revolution has brought along with it a new way of shopping. Both big and small, e-business websites have flooded the Internet by the hundreds of thousands. Anything you can buy from a brick and mortar store (实体店) you can also buy online: from food and clothes to toys, no matter what you’re looking for, you’re bound to find the right online store with just a few clicks of the mouse. A trip to Walmart wastes time, burns gas.The recent advancements in mobile technology and the introduction of mobile phones with enhanced (提高的) web capabilities have even made some people order their groceries when they get out from work and have them delivered at their doorstep by the time they get home. And as “Time is money”, this practice is lifesaving for people whowork two jobs.Technology will continue to advance and e-business will follow closely in its footsteps. The task was to tell us, in no more than 1,000 words, what scientific advance they would most like to see in their lifetimes, and why it mattered to them. The response was phenomenal: we received 661 entries. Some entrants hoped that science would make their lifetimes much longer than they can currently expect. Many looked forward to work that will end climate change. Others wanted to see advances in our understanding of human history, crop growth, space exploration, and medical technologies. The ideas were inspiring. The winner is a compelling essay by Yasmin Ali, a PhD student at the University of Nottingham, UK. Ali submitted a piece on Beethoven, her brother’s hearing loss and the science which she hoped would one day cure it. It stood out to the judges as a reminder of why many scientists do research: to make the world better tomorrow than it is today. All essays were judged by a group of Nature editors. The top ten submissions were then ranked by three members of a separate judging group: Magdalena Skipper, editor-in-chief of Nature; Faith Osier, a researcher; and Jess Wade, a physicist. All submissions were kept anonymous throughout the process. We also selected two runners-up(非冠军的获奖者).Physicist Robert Schittkoat Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, proposes that nuclear fusion(核聚变) could offer a solution to the climate crisis, in a piece that effortlessly mixes grand ambition with gentle humour. And chemist Matthew Zajac at the University ofChicagoin Illinois wrote a powerful personal account of why he wants to see advances in the field of same-sex reproduction. The results show that today’s young scientists have a wealth of ideas, talent and conviction that research can transform their world. I wasn’t looking forward to it.I soon discovered, however, that living in a house without Wi-Fi was easier than I expected.Contact between my friends and family was significantly reduced to the odd text message here and there. I couldn’t enjoy my usual web browsing on BBC iPlayer, social media sites, keeping up to date with the news, oreven wanting to know the opening hours of shops in the new area I was in.I didn’t, however, spend a full four months without connecting to a Wi-Fi network. It made me think , though , how unnecessary it can be , how unnecessarily we rely on it—how we perhaps rely on it too much. As a person, I was more sociable. I spent more time with my housemates instead of hiding behind a computer screen. I did other things that I wouldn’t necessarily have done if I could have browsed the web at my leisure. I read more, I cooked meals for my friends, and I even tidied up more often. Dare I say it; I learned how to live without Wi-Fi. Dare I say it; I found it was easier than I had imagined.8. I put my earphones in, went outside and ran about 2 miles at 11 p.m. on my birthday. When I got back inside I was content. I was proud of what I was able to do. The next night I did the same. I wasn’t quick or fit but you know that I went outside and did something. This continued for about 2 months until I finally worked up the courage to go to the gym, where I started swimming again as I used to in high school. A month went by and I started lifting weights and continually running.Looking back I can see that exercise helped cure my depression but it didn’t only do that. At the gym I met new friends and back at my dorm I grew confidence to go to the end of the hall seeing people playing Super Smash Brothers and ask if I could join.So go forward to present now. However, a new study provides evidence that the area had a rainforest in the past. The researchers collected a piece of Earth sediment from under the seafloor off the coast ofAntarctica. In the sediment, they discovered forest material that was estimated to be about 90 million years old. At that period, dinosaurs were the ruler animals of the land.Johann Klages, a German geologist, was the lead writer of a study on the findings, published in the journalNature. He said the sediment was collected from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor. Klages said an examination showed that the material didn’t form in the ocean. The researchers estimate that the area — about 900 kilometers from the South Pole — had average yearly temperatures of about12°Cto13°C. The soil included fine dirt particles and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Although no animal remains were found, Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment. The research represents new evidence of the major climate changes Earth experienced in the past — and is currently undergoing today. The soil in the sediment dates back to the planet’s warmest period of the past 140 million years, with sea level about 170 meters higher than today. The researchers said that the rainforest environment inAntarcticawas especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life. Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.8. What can we learn about the sediment collected?A. It formed in the age of dinosaurs.B. A 34-year-oldUSman recently ended up in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper—the spiciest chili in the world. After taking just a single bite of one, the man suffered from serious headaches in the following few days, reported BBC News.In fact, reports of stomachache and headache caused by eating spicy food are not something unusual. But if chilies are harmful, why is it that human beings are the only animals to eat this vegetable? According to the website Huanqiu, about 600 million Chinese people—almost half of the national population—are chili eaters. So what makes people love chilies so much? The human body reacts to the burning feeling that comes from eating chilies by releasing natural chemicals that “produce a sense of happiness” , noted BBC News. And the benefits go even further than just personal enjoyment. A survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences found that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The number decreased to 14 percent for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. And another study done by theUniversityofVermontcame to a similar conclusion. “The data encourages people to eat more spicy food to improve health and reduce death risk at an early age,” LiuQi, a nutritionist at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, told BBC News.Chilies have anti-cancer quality and the ability to increase our metabolism (新陈代谢). Honestly speaking, they're one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out everywhere I go, much as other travelers head toward clothing stores, libraries, coffee shops or galleries. The greatest beauty of the grocery store –– whether it's a supermarket or a tiny shop –– is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook their own meals. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the bread, and oh, the chocolate...always the chocolate!Being the environmental nerd(呆子)I am, I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect people's attitudes towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaveseverything loose in bins. In Brazil, everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teenaged cashier in Sri Lanka, over which bag of crunchy(松脆的)mix to buy. He insisted that the one labeled “spicy” would be too hot for me, but I told him I was willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes. It's interesting then to come home and look at one's own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by what you realize.4. Grocery stores vary in different countries.D. Sri Lankans like to give strangers suggestions.7. Which of the following shows the structure of text? (P: paragraph)A. B.C. D.CMy first week working in a restaurant, one of the servers said something that stuck with me: Everyone should work in a restaurant for at least a year. At the time, I didn't get it, but I took the advice to heart and worked in restaurants on and off for the next eight years. Before realizing it, I mastered many important skills, one of which is communication skill. When I was little, I was so shy that I used to hide behind my mom whenever someone spoke to me. And when I first started in restaurants, I had two personalities: Restaurant Lizzy and Home Lizzy. It was easier to pretend to be a different person while at work, since it was so different from who I actually was. But gradually, the skills I learned working in restaurants helped Home Lizzy come out of her shell in the real world. When you work in a restaurant, you don't have the luxury of hiding behind your parents to avoid talking to people. I'm still 110% an introvert, but restaurant work helped me communicate. Working in a restaurant not only helped me speak clearly, deliberately and directly but also taught me how to talk about almost everything. Someguests don't want their servers to interact too much with them, and that's fine. But some sit at the bar simply to chat with you. You learn how to judge your guests' level of interest in communicating with you, and how to exit a conversation at the appropriate time.My restaurant work is something that I'm most proud of and I know I wouldn't be the person I am today without those eight years of experience. If you're still on the fence about working in a restaurant for that long, start with one year. I doubt that you'll look back.8. What did the writer think of the server's words?A. Impressive.B. Ridiculous.C. Amusing.D. Logical.9. What do we infer from Paragraph 2?A. The writer tried different jobs.B. The writer became more sociable.C. The writer used an invented name.D. The writer had a hard time at work.10. Which of the following best describes the writer's restaurant work?A. Boring.B. Relaxing.C. Worthwhile.D. Unchallenging.11. What message does the writer try to convey in this passage?A. A strong-willed soul can reach his goal.B. Things are difficult before they are easy.C. Communication skills advance your career.D. Restaurantwork helps to achieve a better self.DOwning a dog is associated with a significantly lower risk of heart disease and death, according to a comprehensive new study published by a team of Swedish researchers on Friday in the journal Scientific Reports. The scientists followed 3.4 million people over the course of 12 years and found that adults who lived alone and owned a dog were 33 percent less likely to die during the study than adults who lived alone without dogs. In addition, the single adults with dogs were 36 percent less likely to die from heart disease.“Dog ownership was especiallyprominentas a protective factor in persons living alone, which is a group reported previously to be at higher risk of heart disease and death than those living in a multi-person household,” Mwenya Mubanga, a Ph.D. student at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, and the lead junior author of the study, said in a statement announcing its findings. The link between dog ownership and lower mortality(死亡率)was less pronounced in adults who lived either with family members or partners, but still present, according to the study. “Perhaps a dog may stand in as an important family member in the single households,” Mubanga added.“Another interesting findingwas that owners of dogs which were intended originally for hunting were most protected.”The study, which is the largest to date on the health relations of owning a dog, suggested that some of the reasons dog owners may have a lower risk of mortality and heart disease were because dog owners walk more. “These kind of epidemiological (流行病学的)studies look for associations in large populations but do not provide answers on whether and how dogs could protect their owners from heart disease,” Tove Fall, a senior author of the study and a professor at Uppsala University, said in a statement“We know that dog owners in general have a higher level of physical activity, which could be one explanation to the observed results,” Fall added. “Other explanations include an increased well-being and social contacts or effects of the dog on the bacterial microbiome(微生物菌群) in the owner.” Fall added that because all participants of dog owners in Sweden or other “European populations with similar culture regarding dog ownership.”12. Over the years, the environmentalist has put over 850 massive artworks underwater worldwide. On February 1, 2021, Taylor launched his latest work — The Underwater Museum of Cannes.―The main goal was to bring attention to the fact that our oceans need our help,‖ Taylor told Dezeen. ―Ocean ecology has been destroyed by human activity in the Mediterranean over the past few decades, and it is not obvious what is taking place when observing the sea from afar.‖The Underwater Museum of Cannes contains 6 sculptures featuring local residents of various ages. They range from Maurice, an 80-year-old fisherman, to Anouk, a 9-year-old student. Towering over 6-feet-tall and weighing 10 tons, the faces are sectioned into two parts, with the outer part like a mask. The mask indicates that the world’s oceans appear powerful and unbeatable from the surface but house an ecosystem that is extremely fragile to careless human activities.Though the waters surrounding the sculptures now appear a pristine blue, the seabed was filled with old boat engines, pipes, and other human-made trash when the project began about four years ago. Besides removing the trash, Taylor also restored the area’s sea grass. Just one square meter of the sea grass can generate up to 10 liters of oxygen daily. The sea grass also helps prevent coastal erosion and provides habitats for many ocean creatures.―The idea of creating an underwater museum was to draw more people underwater and develop a sense ofcare and protection,‖ Taylor told Dezeen. ―If we threw unwanted waste near a forest, there would be a public outcry. But this is happening every day in our surrounding waters and it largely goes unnoticed.4. Why does the outer part ofthe sculptures look like a mask?A. To popularize the features of the locals.B. To remind people to protect themselves.C. To reflect people’s protection of the ocean.D. To stress the sensitiveness of the ecosystem.5. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about?A. How the project was started.B. How the sea grass was restored.C. What recovery effort the project made.D. Why the surroundings were improved.6. What can we infer from what Jason Taylor said in the last paragraph?A. The situation of the ocean is easily ignored.B. The destruction caused to the ocean is noticeable.C. Forests play a more important role in ecosystems.D. People have zero tolerance to damage done to nature.7. What might be the best title for the text?A. The Underwater Museum, a long way to go.B. The Underwater Museum, a big difference to the sea.C. The Underwater Museum, an appeal to conserve ecosystems.D. The Underwater Museum, a masterpiece of Jason Taylor.CPopularization has in some cases changed the original meaning of emotional (情感的) intelligence. Many people now misunderstand emotional intelligence as almost everything desirable in a person's makeup that cannotbe measured by an IQ test, such as character, motivation, confidence, mental stability, optimism and “people skills.” Research has shown that emotional skills may contribute to some of these qualities, but most of them move far beyond skill-based emotional intelligence. We prefer to describe emotional intelligence as a specific set of skills that can be used for either good or bad purposes. The ability to accurately understand how others are feeling may be used by a doctor to find how best tohelp her patients, while a cheater might use it to control potential victims. Being emotionally intelligent does not necessarily make one a moral person.Although popular beliefs regarding emotional intelligence run far ahead of what research can reasonably support, the overall effects of the publicity have been more beneficial than harmful. The most positive aspect of this popularization is a new and much needed emphasis (重视) on emotion by employers, educators and others interested in promoting social well-being. The popularization of emotional intelligence has helped both the public and researchers re-evaluate the functionality of emotions and how they serve people adaptively in everyday life.Although the continuing popular appeal of emotional intelligence is desirable, we hope that such attention will excite a greater interest in the scientific and scholarly study of emotion. It is our hope that in coming decades, advances in science will offer new perspectives (视角) from which to study how people manage their lives. Emotional intelligence, with its focus on both head and heart, may serve to point us in the right direction.8. What is a common misunderstanding of emotional intelligence?A. It can be measured by anIQ test.B. It helps to exercise a person’s mind.C. It includes a set of emotional skills.D. It refers to a person’s positive qualities.9. Why does the author mention “doctor” and “cheater” in paragraph 2?A. To explain a rule.B. To clarify a concept.C. To present a fact.D. To make a prediction.10. What is the author’s attitude to the popularization of emotional intelligence?A. Favorable.B. Intolerant.C. Doubtful.D. Unclear.11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning emotional intelligence?A. Its appeal to the public.B. Expectations for future studies.C. Its practical application.D. Scientists with new perspectives.DNowadays organic food hasbecome a fashion. Organic food sales reached a record of $ 45.2 billion in 2017, making it one of the fastest-growing parts of American agriculture. Some people may buy organic food for these reasons like resource cycling and biodiversity, but most people may choose organic food because they think it's healthier. While a small number of studies have shown relationships between eating organic food and reducing risks of being ill, no studies, up to now, have answered the question whether eating organic food can improve health.According to the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), organic food does not suggest anything about health. In 20155 Miles McEvoy, then chief of the National Organic Program for the USDA, refused to admit any health benefits of organic food, saying the question has nothing to do with the National Organic Program. Instead, the USDA thinks that organic refers to a production method that increases cycling of resources keeps ecological balance, and protects biodiversity.I'm an environmental health scientist who has spent over 20 years studying pesticides that do harm to human beings. Several years ago, I was part of the study on whether an organic diet can reduce pesticide exposure. This study focused on a group of pesticides which have always been harmful to children's brain development. We found that children who ate traditional diets had nine times higher exposure to these pesticides than children who ate organic diets.Last month, I published a small study that suggested a path forward to answering the question whether eating organic food actually improves health. My study got a lot of attention. While the results were novel, they didn't answer the big question. As I toldThe New York Timesin 2003, “What does this really mean for the safety of my kids? But we don't know. Nobody does. It was true then, and it's still true now.”12. Why do most people prefer to buy organic food?A. For its health benefits.B. For biodiversity.C. For its delicious taste.D. For resource cycling.13. What does the USDA suggest about organic food?A. It can improve people's health.B. It is produced in an environment-friendly way.C. It can reduce risks of being ill.D. It has nothing to do with the National Organic Program.14. What can be concluded from the author's study?A. Pesticides don't harm children's brain.B. Traditional diets benefit people's health.C. Organic diets can reduce pesticide exposure.D. The results are meaningful to children's safety.15. What is the best title for the text?A.What Is Organic Food?B. Is Organic Food Healthier?C. How Should We Avoid Pesticides?D. Nearly 700 million people get a mosquito-borne illness each year, which results in over one million deaths. Humans experience continuous pressures from disease-carrying mosquitoes in many parts of the world, so we have to find ways to fight against those insects because they keep getting scarier.Even though DEET remains the most commonly used, and most powerful, mosquito repellent ever developed, scientists are actively pursuing effective products based entirely on plant oils. While DEET is an effective contact repellent, many people dislike the oily feel and smell on their skin, and sometimes some people are sensitive to it. Consumers are always interested in alternatives to DEET and other synthetic repellents, so there are numerous natural repellents on the market. In his lab atIowaStateUniversity, Dr. Joel Coats and his team have successfully tested these repellents against three species of dangerous mosquitoes. The first group of the new repellents act through the air. These chemicals have a vapor action that provides protection, and they are called “spatial” repellents, since they act through space. These are potentially most useful in backyards, parks, and houses. The other group are the classic ones that stop insects from standing on a treated surface, such as human skin, clothing or tents; collaborators at the USDA-ARS and BioGents have conducted testing with humans to confirm the effectiveness and identify the very best ones. The new repellents were designed and made from the natural materials in plant essential oils. They maintainmany of the advantages of the natural repellents: They are fully biodegradable, with no ecological concerns or environmental wastes, and generally considered safe like the thousands of types of plant essential oils used in the flavor and perfume industries. However, thorough testing will be conducted to determine if they are truly non-poisonous because there is still no enough evidence.4. What does the author mainly want to show in paragraph 1?A. The way mosquitoes spread disease.B. The high death rate of mosquito-borne illness.C. The difficulty of fighting disease-carrying mosquitoes.D. The urgency of finding tools to fight against mosquitoes.5. What is a disadvantage of DEET?A. It won’t be effective for long.B. It can’t be applied universally.C. It causes discomfort to the users.D. It greatly harms people’s health.6. What can we learn about the second group of the new repellents?A. They can kill mosquitoes indirectly.B. They are mainly used in the open air.C. They are more effective on human skin.D. They can prevent mosquitoes from contacting users.7. What’s the author’s attitude to the new repellents?A. Subjective.B. Objective.C. Doubtful.D. Disapproving.CThe prevalence of melanoma (黑素瘤) has been rapidly rising around the world for nearly a century. While some of the increase may be due to better detection, researchers also believe it’s because we’re spending more time outdoors in the sun, vacationing to warmer climates during the winter and using tanning beds. That rise is concerning, since melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer. Most of us know to cover up and apply sunscreen on hot, sunny days, but when fall arrives, we tend to drop those habits. Experts warn that’s a mistake. Though there’s less need for sun protection after summer ends, exposure to UV rays still adds up.What precautions you should take to defend against melanoma during the cooler months depends on where you are in the world. That’s because the further away you are from the equator, the more UV rays weaken in thewinter. “In southern England or Canada, the daily dose of UVA on a clear summer day is 6.5 times higher than on a clear winter day,” says Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatologists. “People in those countries typically receive only about 5% of their annual UV exposure in the winter months.”But no matter where you are, even during colder, lower risk months, it’s a mistake to put your sun-protection habits on ice. “It’s important to wear sun-screen when there is a lot of glare from the snow,” says Victoria Mar, director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Finally, you should monitor your moles(痣). “Early detection of melanoma is vital for successful treatment,” says Diffey. If it’s caught before it spreads to other parts of the body, the patient will have 99 % of chance to survive for five years. If it’s caught late, that can drop to 25%. Warning signs are a mole that’s changing size, shape or colour, or one that’s asymmetrical — sometimes referred to as “ugly duckling” moles. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.8. What’s the main cause of the rise ofmelanoma?A. The climate change.B. Better detection.C. More exposure to the sun.D. The increase ofskin cancer.9.What’s a mistake according to experts?A. Applying sunscreen in summer.B. Wearing sun-screen when there is snow.C. Using sunscreen during lower risk months.D. Dropping sun-protection habits in winter.10. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Prevention is better than cure.B. Health is better than wealth.C. A disease known is half cured.D. When the sun comes in, the doctor comes out.11. What is the best title of the text?A. Detect Melanoma.B. Beware Winter Rays.C. Monitor Your Moles.D. Spend Less Time Outdoors.DAt Aizo Chuo Hospital in Japan, employees greet newcomers, guide patients to and from the surgery area, and print out maps of the hospital for confused visitors. They don’t take lunch breaks or even get paid. Why?They’re robots!Robots have long worked in factories, helping to build cars and electronic appliances. But today’s robots don’t just do the jobs of people-they actually look and act a lot like people.Kansei, arobot from Japan, has a plastic face covering 19 movable parts. The robot can make 36 facial expressions in response to different words. Kansei shakes in fear at the word “war” and smiles when it hears the word “dinner”.Researchers in Europe are going even further with iCub, a “baby” robot. They are teaching it to speak and hold conversations. The ability to interact is crucial for robots that will one day work closely with humans says robotics professor ChrisAtkeson. “ This will require robots to understand what you say and how you are feeling and respond with appropriate emotions, ” he told WR News.Japanese scientist Minoru Asada agrees. He is building a robot called CB2 that acts like a real baby. “ Right now, it only goes, ̒Ah, ah. ̓But as we develop its learning function, it will start saying more complex sentences and moving on its own, ” Asada says. “ Next-generation robots need to be able to learn and develop by themselves.”Intelligent robot will become more important in the future, as populations age and the number of human workers declines in many countries. “ We’re going to have many more old people and not enough young people to care for them,” says robot researcher Matthew Mason. “ Technology can help the old people live at home longer, instead of going to nursing homes.”12. According to the passage, what jobs have robots already performed?A. Giving advice, answering customer questions and planning events.B. Producing factory goods, building cars and greeting customers.C. Greeting customers, producing factory goods and performing surgery.D. Building cars, driving passengers and providing directions.13. The second paragraph in this passage is mainly about?A. To explain how a robot works.B. To define what a robot is.C. To describe the functions of modern robots.D. To predict the future uses of robots.14. How does the Kansei robot react on the word “fire”?A. Use languages to warn nearby humans.B Back up its memory files.C. Activate an automatic fire alarm.D. Produce a worried look on his face.15. In Asada’s opinion, the next step for robots will be to develop_______.A. the ability to learn independentlyB. the ability to understand human commandsC. the capacity to interact with humansD. the willingness to work together第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
