新托福口语的六个Task 按题型可分为两类:1. 独立口语命题independent speaking task(类似于雅思口语第二部分的考察方式,给定问题单纯考speaking skill);2.综合口语命题integrated speaking task(根据阅读和听力的内容回答问题,是一种新型考试形式,考察学生阅读听力和口语等综合能力)。按话题可以分为三类:1. 个人生活;2. 校园场景;3. 学术场景。Task 4既是综合题又是学术题,其应对策略必定从综合题和学术题的特点入手,本文就综合题这一角度出发,谈谈Task 4的备战方法之第一招——记笔记(note-taking)。

作为综合题,Task4要求考生先读一篇100字左右的短文,然后听一段60-90秒的学术讲座,通常情况下,阅读材料大致介绍某学科的一个基本概念或术语,而听力材料则是对这一概念的详细讲解和说明。考生的任务是用听力中的例子或细节来解释阅读中的概念。在这一环节中,考生只是担当一个reporter的角色,不允许给个人观点。评分的一个重要标准是考生是否能按要求准确并且无缺失地概括阅读和听力材料中的重点信息。可以看出,在此过程中,考生除了需要具备一定的口语复述能力之外,更重要的是要懂得一些note-taking的技巧。因为人的短时记忆是有限的,精确有序的信息再现依赖于完整而清晰的notes。这种口语考试模式再一次突显了新托福考试的宗旨,与雅思考试一样都是为了检测考生是否具备在海外留学和生存的能力。note-taking是今后留学生涯中必不可少的技能,必要的了解和操练不仅是备战新托福口语的利器,也为日后的继续学习做了准备。下面结合IBT TOEFL Task 4的特点谈谈如何有效的take notes.

第一步:阅读、列提纲

Task4开始时,有45秒钟的阅读时间,在这一过程中,应充分利用文章标题给的提示,快速确定Task4的Topic,并找出sub-points的数量和内容。举例说明如下:

Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

When we speak with other people face-to-face, the nonverbal signals we give—our facial expressions, hand gestures, body movements, and tone of voice—often communicate as mush as, or more than, the words we utter. When our nonverbal signals, which we often produce unconsciously, agree with our verbal message, the verbal message is enhanced and supported, made more convincing. But when they conflict with the verbal message, we maybe communicating an entirely different and more accurate message than what we intend.

对于这篇短文,我们通过survey标题可以确知其Topic,即verbal和nonverbal,带着这两个关键词去读文章主体部分,可以发现这样的一个特点(这也是多数Task4短文的一个共同特点),一句Topic sentence, 两句supporting ideas。运用速记方法,本篇outline可以列为:

其中“&”, “=”和“≠”都是是速记符号,这里提醒广大托友们要形成自己的一套shorthand notes(速记方法), 这在快速Jot down信息这一方面起

着重要作用。message一词是对communication的有意替换。不可忘记的一点,口语评分对paraphrase有特别要求,原封不动的照搬阅读和听力中的词或句会大大影响口语成绩。因此,应尽量在notes中就做好替换,为口语作答服务。第一行的Nonverbal & verbal message in face-to-face talk是为了口语的开场白做的准备。Outline的主体可以比较简略甚至是抽象,自己看得懂就行,但最好有个清楚的开始句,保证作答时间开始时可以快速开口,而不是看着寥寥的几个单词茫然不知从何讲起,要知道,好的开始是成功的一半。

第二步:预测、静听、记笔记

相比较而言,阅读后的一分钟听力在Task 4中的比重更大。阅读是一个引子,引出概念,听力才是对概念的详细解释,也是口语回答的重点所在。为了做好对听力内容的note-taking,预测这个步骤很重要。它开始于阅读文章的出现,贯穿整个Task 4始终。一个good listener善于采取主动,根据已掌握的适量背景知识和说话者的语调等提示信息,合理预测说话者主要和次要内容的出场顺序,从而有侧重点的记下lecture的脉络主线以及细节支撑。形成清晰的outline, 保证口语作答时有条不紊的将main points以及supporting details成功再现。仍然以上面所谈话题为例:

通过阅读文章,已经知道听力将会继续谈论verbal 和nonverbal signals 的问题。且根据Task 4的一贯出题特点,可以预知听力讲座将会对阅读提纲所提及的两者一致和不一致关系对表达信息的影响做进一步举例说明。也就是说,很有可能举两个例子,分别论证前面阅读提纲中的“=”和“≠”两点内容。Lecture一开始便是讲故事,根据重读的几个单词“favorite

uncle”,“ visit”, “haven’t seen for years”,了解基本情节,接下来当听到“said sth”时要知道这是讲到了verbal message,此时应该预测到后

面肯定会出现nonverbal信息,需注意。果然“eyes wide”, “big smile”出现了。这个故事是说明非口头语言对表达信息的肯定和强化作用,那么再听到信号词“but compared with this”的时候就该在outline上换行并同时提高警惕,等待第二个example的出现。这将是个反例,所以要注意抓住verbal和nonverbal矛盾所在。

第三步:整理、选词

通过以上两个步骤,笔记上已经有了阅读和听力的要点信息,而听力放音结束后的30秒钟准备时间则刚好用来整理笔记。主要是标清笔记中要点的主次以及先后关系,同时想好作答的开场白,指示词和过渡词。有时间的话还可以记下话题相关的同义词。

总之,笔记质量的高低直接决定了Task 4任务完成质量的优劣,按照以上三个步骤加以练习,相信可以在note-taking方面有所提高。

托福口语Task1四类话题整合及思路整理 托福口语当中,task 1,2作为independent tasks,是很多考生比较头疼的问题。虽然它相较于后面的integrated tasks来说形式简单,给你一句话的题目直接说出你的思路即可,但是它所涉及到的知识面是非常广泛的,甚至会涉及到我们之前完全没有思考过的领域,甚至是不熟悉的领域。这就要求着我们在复习的时候对于不同话题的思路整理,包括相似话题的整合、以及陌生话题的思路扩展。 Task 1无非就是让我们描述一个与我们生活息息相关的一些事物,我们较为常见的一些话题可以简单来说归纳为四个字母——“OPPE”,及O(object), P(person), P(place), E(event)。 一、object类话题 根据以往常出的题目总结来看,object往往可以分为tangible object(有形物体)以及intangible object(无形无体)。 Tangible object,顾名思义我们能够看得见摸得着的实物,除了一些比较常规的special gift,meaning object之外,还包括出题者最爱考的一些关于book类的话题,即让我们描述最喜欢看的、或是读过的最有意义的一本书。另外,较为常见的一些题目还包括描述a song, a film, a painting, a photograph等题目。在这样的题目当中,很多同学因为不知道要说什么或是不熟悉这样的事物导致完全说不出或是表述不流利,结结巴巴说不到重点。在遇到此类题目,一个比较简单的思路就是不要纠结于一些大家都要知道的名著,我们完全可以从自己比较熟悉的一些话题展开,如自己画的第一幅全家福。另外,尽量避免每个人都在讲的一些话题,比如大部分人都在说《Harry Potter》,那我们如果换成《How to win friends》会不会好很多呢?一定不要给自己挖坑,怎么便于表述怎么来。 至于intangible object,较为常考的有让我们去描述positive invention,favorite subject,important characteristic等话题。在这里还是一样,就我们容易表述的说,每个想法列出两个关键词,再去展开就可以了,在这里表述以简单易懂为主,千万不要说一些高深曲折的大道理。掌握了这些素材之后,object类题目就没问题了。所以建议在考试之前,先把所有可能会考到的题目先过一遍,想到要说什么就已经成功了一半了。 二、person类话题 Person类话题在task 1的考试中形式不多,总结起来无非两类人,一种是我们比较熟悉的在我们身边的人,例如family member, best friend, favorite teacher, an old person you respect 等,由于这些都是我们较为熟悉的,所以比较容易想到,在表述的时候也较为简单。相对来说会有一定难度的就是第二类人——famous person名人了。在task 1,它有可能让你去描述一位你钦佩、喜欢或是想见面的名人,甚至给你规定一定领域。这是如果碰到一些不关注这一领域的就不太好说了。比如一些女生平时对体育不感兴趣,但考试的时候让你去描述一个你最喜欢的足球选手,那可能一下子就懵圈了。但是遇到这样的题目也不用怕,在我们备考时完全可以提前准备好相关素材,在考试的时候也不是任何领域都会考我们,常见的也就actor/actress, singer, spotsman, business man, leader这几类,所以就算我们不喜欢不感兴趣,只要我每个领域都想出来一个人就完全没有问题啦。 在这里给到两个我们凡事涉及到人都非常通用的一些素材思路,一是表述ta在专业领域上的卓越表现。比如ta是歌手,我们说ta歌唱得好,是演员我们说ta演技精湛,是商人我们说ta把公司
