Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean,an Sshaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic has,in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization.Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanicliveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.“Storm at Sea”,a short poem written around 700,is generally regarded as one of mankind's earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic. When the wind is from the westAll the waves that cannot restTo the east must thunder onWhere the bright tree of the sunIs rooted in the ocean's breast. As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull.It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling. It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath-perhaps not so noticeably out in midocean, but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿)nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too:unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat,a kind of subocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities:sometimes peaceful and pleasant,on rare occasions rough and wild;always it is strong and striking. 1.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is ________.A.always energetic B.lacking in livelinessC.shaped like a square D.favored by ancient poets解析细节理解题。

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we a re beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.1. What does the underlined phrase “that over-consumption” refer to?A. Using too much packaging.B. Recycling too many wastes.C. Making more products than necessary.D. Having more material than is needed.2. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show .A. the tendency of cutting household wasteB. the increase of packaging recyclingC. the rapid growth of supermarketsD. the fact of packaging overuse3. According to the text, recycling .A. helps control the greenhouse effectB. means burning packaging for energyC. is the solution to gas shortageD. leads to a waste of land4. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.D. Other products are better packaged than food.5. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.B. Needless material is mostly recycled.C. People like collecting recyclable wastes.D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.【参考答案】1-5 DDACA阅读下列四篇短文,从每小题后所给的A,B,C或D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Below is a selection from a popular science book.If blood is red,why are veins(静脉) blue?Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish colour.Although blood looks red when it's outside the body, when it's sitting ina vein near the surface of the skin,it's more of a dark reddish purple colour.Atthe right depth, these bloodfilled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.Which works harder, your heart or your brain? That kind of depends on whether you're busy thinking or busy exercising.Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood overa lifetime to fill a supertanker. But,in the long run, your brain probably tipsit, because even when you're sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.Why do teeth fall out,and why don't they grow back in grownups?Baby (or “milk”) teeth do not last long;they fall out to make room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on.Adult teeth fall out when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria.Once this second set of teeth has grown in,you're done. When they're gone, they're gone. This is because nature figures you're set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.Do old people shrink as they age?Yes and no.Many people do get shorter as they age. But,when they do,it isn't because they're shrinking all over. They simply lose height as their spine(脊柱) becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effects of gravity(重力).Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older.Men lose an average of 34 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more.If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No,because old people don't really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards—their legs, arms and backbones gettingshorter. When they do get shorter,it's because the spine has shortened a little.Or,more often, become more bent and curved. Why does spinning make you dizzy(眩晕的)?Because your brain gets confused between what you're seeing and what you're feeling. The brain senses that you're spinning using specialgravityandmotionsensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision and balance stable. But,when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you're moving while you're not!Where do feelings and emotions come from?Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have this brain area—from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain,we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on the planet. If exercise wears you out,how can it be good for you?Because our bodies adapt to everything we do to them. And as far as your body is concerned,it's “use it,or lose it”!It's not that exercise makes you healthy;it's more that a lack of exercise leaves your body weak and easily affected by disease.1.What is the colour of blood in a vein near the surface of the skin?A.Blue. B.Light yellow.C.Red. D.Dark reddish purple.解析细节理解题。

体裁:记叙文话题:关爱动物时间:7分钟My husband and I had just opened up a pet sitting business earlier that year. Our customers had slowly risen from three to thirty a month. We were busy through those hot summer months, driving between visits. Our services were strictly held at the pet owner's home.It was almost too busy for the two of us,but we were making good money! We asked pet owners new to our services to phone two weeks ahead so we had enough time to meet the owners and pets at their homes and make any following meeting before the owner leaves. One day,we decided to take on a new customer just two days before they would leave. We met the family, filled in a form, and spent some time with their dog,Hercules. He playfully jumped on us and touched our hands and arms using his tongue. The family laughed as he did this, showing us that he was very loving. Two days later I appeared at the house, alone.I came up to Hercules and said hello happily.I filled up his water bowl and cleaned any messes he made.Meanwhile,he was so lovely sitting beside.I thought this would be the good picture to send to the owners,a usual service. After the light and “click” sound went off,Hercules rushed at me.I didn't know what had just happened until I noticed the drops of blood.I ran out and did the only thing—calling my husband. Then I went to neighbors for help.My husband arrived after ten minutes. The helpful neighbor and my husband led Hercules back into his pen(圈).Then my husband and I took off to the hospital.I must have looked like I was shot when I walked into the hospital. The nursesquickly moved me to a room.I asked the doctor in a weak but playful manner,“AmI going to die?” He replied,“Finally.”【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文。

Life is not a beauty contest. We all focus on our imperfections(瑕疵).In fact, you should see yourself in a proper way. It's necessary for you to know that self- knowledge(自知之明)is the most important beauty secret.Don't hate yourself for wanting to be beautiful.Good-looking people get special treatment from strangers, employers and even their own mothers. We're not even close to our objective when it comes to judging our own looks.Other people see the whole package. But when we look in the mirror,we're likely to pay attention to imperfections. For example, that bump(凸起)on your friend's nose. It's her feature! It gives her character! But to you, that thing on your nose is completely ugly. Our opinions of our own looks are also changeable. So if we can't trust the judgment of ourselves,or the words of friends and family which can take away our doubts,we're left to the cool judgment of strangers to satisfy our curiosity about our appearances. The website“Hot or Not”,which lets people hand their photos in for others to judge, had nearly 2 million daily page views within a week in 2000.But it's not the best way to improve the judgment of yourself because you have no confidence yet in your mind.Everyone may pay too much attention to his or her own appearance, and at the same time worry about being criticized. If you are particularly attentive to your body,or if you feel uncomfortable in public, you are certainly hotter than you think. And we all have the ability to change how other people judge us without changing our looks. When you believe that you look good, others will see you in a more favorable way.Improve your impression from the inside.Understanding your own advantages can help you stop worrying about your appearance and look better.1.What can we infer from the first paragraph?A.We should focus on our advantages.B.Don't be cheated by others' praise.C.Judging oneself in a right way is important.D.It's unnecessary to know the meaning of beauty.答案:C推理判断题。

Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity.I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary.I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn't accumulating memories a way of preserving the past? When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley, well-equipped with pens, a diary, and a camera.During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across.I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows.I automatically took out my pen...At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley.AllI remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had setdown in my diary. Now, I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling.I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful.I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful.I'm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old.I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures andnotes.Maybe I won't have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I'll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me.I don't live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves. 1.Before the age of thirteen, the author regarded keeping a diary as a way of________.A.observing her school routineB.expressing her satisfactionC.impressing her classmatesD.preserving her history解析细节理解题。

An international business specialist group has announced that the move towards a green economy is becoming more urgent for emerging economies(新兴经济体),especially South Africa. On Monday,Innovation Group announced that green economic policies were becoming increasingly important on the global landscape and for emerging economies.According to Pule Mokoena, from Innovation Group, experts believe the adoption of these green policies will assist w ith“ailing(不景气的)economies”.“The move to a green economy, such as the adoption of alternative energy solutions, should be adopted by economies and countries.”Mokoena's comments came as Greenpeace Africa called on the South African government to review its decision to include nuclear energy into the country's energy plan.In order to avoid all energy crisis in the country,the_energy_mix_had_to_be_diversified,including broadening energy carriers to include gas, nuclear, biomass, renewable(wind, solar and hydro),as well as the efficient use of the existing resources, such as coal. For this reason, nuclear energy will account for 23 percent of South Africa's energy needs, followed by coal at 15 percent, hydro at six percent, gas six percent, turbines six percent and renewable energy 42 percent. However,Pule said there are other options for South Africa's energy needs.“Too many companies are focusing on the costs of green policies, rather than focusing on the long-term benefits,”explained Mokoena.Nobel economics winner Joseph Stiglitz and the former World Bank chief economist agree with Mokoena and believe that the need to switch to green technology should be seen as an opportunity and not as a burden. When in South Africa earlier this year,Stiglitz said a switch to green technology would stimulate demand for a range of goods and services, which would have a beneficial impact on the aftermath of the global recession. He urged policymakers not to be held back by short-term perspectives.Innovation Group has already developed a reliable alternate energy solution, which the company believes will change the landscape of this emerging market andother companies will follow suite and offer renewable energy solutions for emerging economies.“We are quickly becoming an industry leader i n this space thanks to our in -house expert knowledge on the various SWH technologies available and the application of our Business Process Outsourcing Solutions, which allow for the mass roll-out of these technologies on a national scale. We are proud to be an active part of the solution to the current energy crisis and plan to become a major force in the drive towards sustainability and good environmental practice,”Pule said.【语篇解读】像南非这样的新兴经济体经历了经济的快速发展之后会面临能源危机,而走绿色发展道路是唯一的出路。

Sometimes, the simplest ideas are the best. For example, to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially, on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already, in the form of asphalt(柏油) roads?Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt, a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up. The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside. The heat-collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground. When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 metres lies a natural aquifer(蓄水层) into which several heat exchangers(交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the ground-water, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store. In winter, the working system is changed slightly. Water is pumped through the he at exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up. After performing that task, it is pumped under the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.1. Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?A. Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.B. Large, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.C. The Dutch engineer’s system has been widely used.D. Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.2. For what purpose are the diving pipes used?A. To absorb heat from the sun.B. To store heat for future use.C. To turn solar energy into heat energy.D. To carry heat down below the surface.3. From the last paragraph we can learn that .A. some pipes have to be re-arranged in winterB. the system can do more than warming up the buildingC. the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surfaceD. less heat may be collected in winter than in summer4. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. What we shall do if the system goes wrong.B. What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.C. How the system cools the building in summer.D. How the system collects heat in spring and autumn.【参考答案】1-4 DDBC阅读理解。

The need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the world’s supply of water. With 97% of the world’s w ater too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture. Although the idea of a water shortage (短缺) seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall country, many of the world’s agricultural industries experience constant water shortages.Although dams can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution (重新分配) are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental cost to be considered. Where valleys (山谷) are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming requirements. This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation (灌溉). In Texas, farmers’ overuse of irrgation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.Saudi Arabia’s attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping o f huge quantities of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.1. From the first two paragraphs we learn that .A. much of the world’s water is available for useB. people in high rainfall countries feel luckyC. the costs of water redistribution should be consideredD. water can be easily carried through pipes across the world2. Which of the following is true?A. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%.B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages.C.

It' s never a real problem for us when the weather gets cold.We have many different ways ofcoping with the cold.We can put on more clothes, stay next to a fireplace, turn on the air conditioner or simply travel to a warmer city to spend the winter. But things are not as easy for plants Unlike humans, plants can’t move to escape the cold or generate heat to keep themselves warm.So how do they manage to survive the freezing winter? The cold is a big challenge for plants.Their living tissues can be damaged when they freeze. It's like a plant's equivalent(相等物)to frostbite(冻疮).Also, the process of freezing and thawing (解冻)can cause air bubbles to form in the plant's water transport system. If enough of these air bubbles come together as water thaws they can block the flow of water from the roots to the leaves and kill the plant. To live through cold weather, plants have developed three strategies,Some plants, such as oak trees, avoid freezing damage by dropping their leaves, before the winter chill sets in-effectively shutting off the flow of water between roots and leaves—and growing new leaves and water transport cells when the warm spring returns. Other plants, pine trees for example, protectthem-selves by narrowing their water transport cells, which makes it easier for cells to travel among air bubbles. The third stratef;yi8 also the most extreme. Some plants; die on the ground in winter and start growing as new plants from seeds when conditions get warmer. However, these smart strategies were developed \nmry8lowl y-over millions of years of evolution. This leads scientists to worry that plants may not be able to deal with human-caused climate change, which has only started occurring over the past few decades.Scientists are hoping to find possible ways to save plants from the threat of climate change.1.What is the text mainly about?A.Different ways for people to keep warm.B.How plants live through the freezing winter.C.How plants develop the 8tratef;ies to keep warm*D.The ways to save plants from the cold,2.If the water transport from roots to leaves 18 blocked, .A.the plant will suffer from f'rostbiteB.air bubbles will be formedC.the plant's living tissues will be damagedD.the plant will be killed3.Oak trees protect themselves by .A.stopping the water transport from roots to leavesB.dropping their leaves to grow seedsC.slowing the flow of water from roots to leavesD.storing enough water in the roots4.What does the underlined phrase “sets i n” mean in Paragraph3?A.stops B.begins C.leaves D.returns5.What is the main idea of the last paragraphA.Plants can, easily adapt to climate change.B.Scientists are making efforts to save plants.C.Climates change is a great threat to plants.D.Plants are developing new strategies to survive.【参考答案】1—5、BDADC阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
