Someone —specifically the father-daughter team ofLarry and Meagan Johnson — has figured out that on someAmerican job sites, five generations are working side by side.In their new book about generations in the workplace, thepair argue that while such an age difference adds a lot oftexture and a variety of life experiences, it can also bringtensions and conflicts. The Johnsons are human-resource trainers and public speakers. Dad Larry is a former health-care executive; daughter Meagan is a onetime high-level sales manager. Here are the oldest and youngest of the five generations they identify:They call the oldest group Traditionals, born before 1945. They were heavily influenced by the lessons of the Great Depression and the Second World War. They respect authority, set a high standard of workmanship, and commun icate easily and confidently. But they’re also stubbornly independent. They want their opinions heard. At the other extreme are what the Johnsons call Linksters, born after 1995 into today’s more complicated, multi-media world. They live and breathe technology and are often socialactivists. You won’t find many 15-year-olds in the offices of large companies, except as volunteers, of course, but quite old and quite young workers do come together in sales environments like bike shops and ice-cream stores. The Johnsons, Larry and Meagan, represent a generation gap themselves in their work with jobsite issues. The Johnsons’ point is that as the average lifespan continues to rise and retirement dates get delayed because of the tight economy, people of different generations are working side by side, more often bringing with them very different ideas about company loyalty and work values. The five generations are heavily influenced by quite different events, social trends, and the cultural phenomena of their times. Their experiences shape their behavior and make it difficult, sometimes, for managers to achieve a strong and efficient workplace.Larry and Meagan Johnson discuss all this in greater detail in a new book, “Generations, Inc. : From Boomers to Linksters—Managing the Friction between Generations at Work,〞 published by Amacom Press, which is available in all good bookstores from this Friday.1. The type of generation gap in Paragraph 1 refers to the difference in beliefs ________ .A. between managers and workersB. among family membersC. among employeesD. between older and newer companies2. Which of the following statements is NOT true about Traditionals?A. They’ve learned much from war and economic disaster.B. They’re difficult to work with as they are stubborn.C. They respect their boss and hope to be respected.D. They’re independent workers with great confidence.3. According to the passage, the Linksters are usually ________ .A. found working in the offices of large companiesB. influenced by media and technologyC. enthusiastic multi-media activistsD. ice-cream sellers4. According to the passage, modern workforces are more diverse because ________ .A. people want to increase their average lifespanB. many young people are entering the workforceC. employees with different values can benefit their companiesD. retirement dates are being delayed for economic reasons5. She hasnever studied or done research abroad. She is neither a memberof the Chinese Academy of Sciences nor the Chinese Academy ofEngineering. However, the 81-year-old pharmacologist (药物学家) has become the first scientist on the Chinese mainland towin a Lasker Award, the medical prize of the Albert and MaryLasker Foundation (基金会).The Lasker Awards have existed since 1945. The winners arealways people who have really helped us to understand, recognize, treat, cure and prevent disease. Tu was presented the 2011 Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award on September 23. She discovered a drug called artemisinin (青蒿素). The drug is now widely used against malaria (疟疾).Tu and her colleagues joined a government project to find a new malaria drug in the late 1960s during the “cultural revolution” (1966~1976). They made 380 herbal extracts (草药提取物) from 200 potential recipes. The recipes came from traditional Chinese medical books. The team then tested them on malaria-infected mice. Finally Tu became interested in an extract of the plant qinghao, or sweetwormwood (青蒿).According to an ancient Chinese medicine book, qinghao was once used to treat malaria. However, the extract they made in the lab didn’t work well. Tu thought the effective ingredient in qinghao may be destroyed by high temperatures. Therefore, Tu tried to make the extract with ether (乙醚) which has a much lower boiling point than water. In 1971, after more than 190 failures, Tu finally got an extract that was 100 percent effective against the malaria parasites (寄生虫). The extract was called qinghaosu, later renamed artemisinin.According to a statement on the Lasker Foundation website, during the past four decades, Tu’s drug has saved millions of lives. It is especially important for children in the poorest and least developed parts of the world. However, not many people knew of the scientist until she won the Lasker Award this month.Lasker Awards are known as “America’s Nobels” for the reason that in the last two decades, 28 Lasker Prize winners have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, and 80 since 1945, according to Xinhua News Agency.“The discovery of artemisinin is a gift to mankind from traditional Chinese medicine, ” Tu said when she received the award. “Continuous exploration and development of traditional medicine will, without doubt, bring more medicines to the world. ”1. What can we infer from the first paragraph?A. It is unnecessary to study abroad as a scientific researcher.B. Chinese medicine used not to be recognized in Western countries.C. Tu achieved great things although she didn’t have an impr essive background.D. Tu is the first female scientist to win a Lasker Award.2. In the process of discovering artemisinin, Tu ________ .A. began with a private projectB. succeeded during the first experimentsC. faced many different opinionsD. made extracts in a creative way3. Why is artemisinin especially important for children from poor countries?A. It is a very cheap medicine and easy for them to get hold of.B. They believe in the effect of Chinese medicine.C. There are no other cures for malaria.D. It has the fewest side effects for children.4. According to the article, the Lasker Awards ________ .A. are more influential than Nobel Prizes in the medical fieldB. are awarded to those who have made great medical achievementsC. are awarded to more Americans than people from any other countryD. are usually awarded to scientists who are not famous in their field(B)My high school courses in the United States were so muchfun. Instead of being lectured and tested over and over again,we were actually able to be really creative with our usualschoolwork. In chemistry class, to understand how a double bond forms,we made models out of eggs and crayons (蜡笔). In calculus (微积分), to illustrate the Riemann theory, our math teacher puton wig (假发) and played a rock song on his guitar. In English,to fully appreciate Macbeth, we went to the hall and acted it out without any preparation. In history, to help us memorize (记忆) important dates and facts, we played mini basketball flashcard games. All these random and fun things made each class and each day enjoyable. Believe me, I really did look forward to going to school every morning.I think one reason for this is that many American students lack motivation. Chinese students are motivated to study hard because it is in our culture. Our parents and teachers tell us over and over again that we must study hard.American students, on the other hand, do not have this pressure. Even when they go to college, most state universities set the bar low for entrance examinations. So teachers need to find fun ways to make classwork appeal to students.Of course, besides all the fun we had, we could still be serious. Before the midterm exams, everyone was busily reading through their notes. In my school at least, most students still care for good grades and strive to get as many As as possible.I found my experience there a good balance of work and play. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, but all play and no work makes Jack a mere toy.5. What is the article mainly about?A. What the author’s classes in the US were like.B. Why classes in the US are more fun than those in China.C. The importance of a good balance between work and play.D. Differences in classes between the US and China.6. What made the author’s history class fun?A. Making models out of eggs and crayons.B. Playing mini basketball flashcard games.C. Acting out history stories without any preparation.D. The teacher putting on wig and playing a rock song on his guitar.7. According to the author, US high school teachers try to make their classes fun ________ .A. to encourage students to learnB. to prepare students well for examinationsC. to ease the pressure of studying on studentsD. to make themselves more popular among their students8. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?A. It’s hard for students to get admitted to a state university in the US.B. American students don’t care how well they do in exams.C. The author was under great pressure because of the amount of schoolwork she had to do in the US.D. The author is quite satisfied with her schedule of work and play.Ⅴ. 书面表达我们知道一个人的成长过程是较为复杂的,其个性的形成和发展受诸多因素的影响,比如:家庭、学校、社会、朋友、书籍、名人等。

In 1977~1978, Americans were consuming on average 1, 803 kcal and in 2003~2006 that number had jumped up to 2, 374.The study examined the amount of calories in a specific amount of food, portion sizes that were consumed and how many snacks and meals were consumed within a day. Looking at the results, the researchers concluded that portion size and the amount of meals and snacks eaten are the biggest factors responsible for the change.According to the numbers, the number of daily meals and snacks in 1977 was 3.8 but rose to 4. 8 in 2006. However, the top 10 percent of surveys showed that the number of meals and snacks was as high as seven per day. It appears that in the last few years, portion size seems to be stabilizing, however the total number of calories consumed is increasing. A main reason behind this is the daily consumption of more than 220 more calories consumed daily from soft drinks than in years past. While much diet and health advice over the years has suggested eating more fr equent small meals, it appears the idea of eating more frequently is understood but the foods chosen are not correct. Eating small, frequent m eals can boost your metabolism(新陈代谢) and control hunger more than eating three big meals a day, however, if these smaller meals are high-calorie and salty options, the benefits are not seen.According to the Centers for Disease Control, as many as 25 percent of Americans are obese and these findings suggest that a new focus needs to be placed on portion size and snacking habits in order to reduce those numbers.1.
