Part I Vocabulary and StructureDirections: There are ten incomplete sentences
in this part. For each sentence there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose
the one that best completes the sentence. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET
with a single line through the center.
1. The number of people invited__________fifty,but a number of
them__________absent for different reasons.
A.were.was
B.was,was
C.was,were
D.were,were
2. The man was under so much stress for such a long time that he
finally______.
A.broke down
B.broke up
C.broke out
D.broke in
3. As teachers we should concern ourselves with what is said, not what we
think______.
A.ought to be said
B.must say
C.have to be said
D.need to say
句中的”we think”为插入语,根据与空格相对应的”what is said”,排除B项和D项,又因 what 作单数处
4. American football and baseball are becoming known to the British public
through televised ______ from the United States.
A.transfer
B.deliveries
C.transportation
D.transmissions
5. After a few rounds of talks, both sides regarded the territory dispute ______.
A.being settled
B.to be settled
C.had settled
D.as settled
解析:B项regard sth. to be done和D项regard sth. as done这两种结构都成立,但前者属非正规用法,在正式考题中,当选D项。
6. With trees,flowers and grass__________everywhere,my hometown had
taken on a new look.
A.planted
B.planting
C.to plant
D.to be planted
7. The last half of the nineteenth century______the steady improvement in the
means of travel.
A.has witnessed
B.was witnessed
C.witnessed
D.is witnessed
8. She wasn’t feeling very well; otherwise, she ______ the meeting so early.
A.wouldn’t leave
B.wouldn’t have left
C.didn’t leave
D.hadn’t left

9. He’s only got one shirt because all the rest ______ being washed.
A.is to be
B.is
C.will be
D.are
可排除A、C项,shirt为可数名词,题句中all the rest则应表示复数概念,故答案为D项。
10. We find such shrubs ______ will best stand up to (抵御) hard weather.
A.which
B.as
C.what
D.who
解析:as可在“such…as”、“the same…as”和“as…as”等结构中作关系代词,引导定语从句。在“such…as”结构中,as有时用that替换。
Part II Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages,
each followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are
four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on
the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.
Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and
animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children
would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did
not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn it to keep
away from the fire that had burn it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do
exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use
to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals
might soon die out. In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be
properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger
of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you
too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an airplane may crash on
your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter
falls on you, or you may get cancer! The important thing is not to let fear rule you,
but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then
you have to decide what action to take. In many cases, you can take quick and
successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight
towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well. In some
cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger.
For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing onto your house. In this case,
