The Book ThiefThe story is about a young girl named Liesel who has to live with foster parents(养父母)during World WarⅡ.On the way to her new home, her brother dies, setting the sad tone for the story. There is hope, however, when Liesel discovers her love for reading and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing attacks as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. The Fault in Our StarsThis is probably the most likely book to make you cry,as it records the experiences of teens who are dying from cancer and living their last days in love.Their life is tragic and jarring at the same time as we watch their health deteriorate(恶化).The real tragedy is the love between the main characters, who know that it is certain to “die”.A Child Called “It”Easily one of the saddest stories of abuse in recent decades,A Child Called “It” is based on the true story of Dave Pelzer,a boy from California who suffered at the hands of his sadistic(施虐癖的) family. The tears will come from both sadness and the inspiration tied to Dave’s fight for survival in an environment where he is considered worthless.语篇解读这是一则广告。

Unit 5 Canada—“The True North〞Period 4 Using language: Listening and talking整体设计教材分析This is the fourth teaching period of this unit. As usual, the teacher will first get students to review what they learned in the last period, and then lead in the new lesson. We will focus on training students’ listening ability in this period. The listening passage introduces information about the cultural and racial position of Canada. Canada is one of the few countries that have an official multicultural policy. The population is changing rapidly and immigrants from China are among the most numerous recently. Make sure students go through the exercises before they listen to the tape. This is to sharpen their attention. It will also help them get the gist of the listening text. The teaching procedures may be as follows: First, let students think about and discuss what they know about Canada’s population and the fact that it is a country of immigrants. Second, go through the inplete sentences in Exercise 2 and guess what the topic of the listening text is. Play the tape for students to listen to and decide whether their guessing is right. Third, ask them to listen again for them to do Exercise 2. Fourth, let them listen a third time to check their answers. While they are listening, the teacher should pause and repeat the key sentences to help students understand. When checking the answers, explain some difficult listening points if necessary. In the end, show them the listening text and let them read and retell it. This step can help students understand and grasp the listening material far further.Next, students will listen to a report which Li Daiyu and Liu Qian were asked to give telling their new Canadian friends about China. The purpose of this listening passage is to allow students to make a parison between Canada and China in termsof geography and natural features. The teacher can let students read the directions and go through the exercises before listening. Then ask them to listen to the tape and finish their exercises. They should make notes while listening. When students listen to the text, tell them to ignore the words they don’t know and to concentrate on understanding the gist of the text. Perhaps some students will find it hard to listen to and understand listening materials. Encourage them not to give up. The more they listen to English, the easier it bees. After practicing listening, students are required to talk about some of the major similarities and differences between China and Canada. Encourage them to say something. Don’t always correct the mistakes they have made while they are talking. Otherwise, they would feel reluctant and not say anything more.教学重点1. Develop students’ listening ability.2. Enable students to master different listening skills.3. Let them talk about the major similarities and differences between China and Canada.教学难点1. families of preschoolers to turn off the TV,but there are plenty of highquality shows that promote learning and positive relationships rather than violence, researchers noted.“Although clearly kids watch too much, what’s more worrying is thatthey watch poor quality shows,” said Dr Christakis, the lead researcher on the new study from the University of Washington in Seattle. His former survey of parents of threeto fiveyearold children showed the kids often watched violent cartoons and movies that are “totally inappropriate”.For their study,he and his colleagues randomly divide 565 preschoolers into two groups. In one group, parents recorded notes about kids’ normal TV viewing, without receiving any guidelines to reduce or change those habits. In the other group, researchers made visits and calls and sent monthly newsletters encouraging parents to replace violent TV with educational programming. After six and 12 months, parents reported their kid’s angry, aggressive or anxious behaviors on a questionnaire. At both time points, children in the TV intervention (干预) program had slightly fewer problems than those in the comparison group.Boys in lowincome families seemed to benefit most from the change in programming, the researchers found.“The point is,this is something that is as effective as other things we do to try to guide behavior in children, and it’s fair ly simple,” Christakis said.Another study published in Pediatrics found the more TV kids and teens watched, the more likely they were to have a crime or other problems in society.Children may imitate violence they see—or more time in front of the TV could simply mean less communication with peers and families, and worse performance in school. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends kids watch no more than one to two hours of highquality programming each day.Researchers agreed parents should be mindful of what exactly their young kids are watching on TV as well.“It’s not just about turning the TV off,it’s about changing the channel,” Christakis said.1.What is the positive effect of highquality TV shows on kids?A.Good learning results and relationships.B.Being affected by violence.C.Spending less time on TV programming.D.Encouraging them to turn on the TV.2.For Christakis, what is more concerning?A.Kids watching too much TV.B.TV shows being of poor quality.C.Kids watching too many cartoons.D.Parents receiving no guidelines.3.We can learn from the survey mentioned in Para.3 that________.A.Children don’t like being disturbed while watching TVB.Preschoolers seems to like newsletters more than TVC.Poor children prefer to watch educational programmingD.Kids watching highquality programs have fewer problems4. Christakis thought the effect of educational programming on children’s behaviour was________.A.unclear B.slightC.obvious D.great5.According to the researchers,________.A.getting preschoolers away from TV is difficultB.shows on TV in America are full of violenceC.parents should communicate more with their kidsD.parents should keep an eye on what kids watch on TVⅢ.阅读表达(2013·南昌两校高三上学期第四次联考)[1]Growing up on a remote Michigan farm,Henry Ford knew little of all this—but he soon showed signs that he belonged to a new generation of Americans who were interested more in the industrial future than in the agricultural past.Like most pioneer farmers, his father,William, hoped that his eldest son would join him on the farm.ButHenry______________.He hated farm work and tried his best to avoid it.It was not that he was lazy.Far from it.Give him a mechanical job to do,from mending the gate to sharpening tools, and he would set to work eagerly.[2]Henry was excited by the possibilities that one day the development in technology could free farmers like his father from wasteful and boring toil. When he was twelve he became fascinated with clocks and watches.Soon he was able to repair clocks and watches for friends.[3]In 1876,Henry suffered a huge hit.His mother Mary died in childbirth. There was now no reason for him to stay on the farm, and he decided to get away as soon as he could.Three years later,he took a job as a mechanic in Detroit.By this time steam engines had joined clocks and watches as objects of Henry’s fascination.[4]According to an account given by Henry himself,he first saw a steamdriven road locomotive (火车头) one day in 1877 when he and hisfather,in their farm wagon (马车),met one on the road. The locomotive driver stopped to let the wagon pass, and Henry jumped down and went to him with a lot of technical questions about the engine’s performance. From then on,for a while,Henry became fascinated with steam engines.Making and installing them was the business of the Detroit workshop that he joined at the age of sixteen.1.What is the main idea of the text?(no more than 8 words)________________________________________________________________ ________2.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 1 with proper words.(no more than 6 words)ButHenry_______________________________________________________________ _________.3.What benefit did Henry expect the farmers could get from the development of technology?(no more than 10 words)________________________________________________________________ ________4.Do you think Henry is a lazy man? Why?(no more than 13 words)________________________________________________________________ ________5.What does the underlined word “one” (Line 4,Paragraph 4) probably refer to?(no more than 4 words)课时作业(十五)Ⅰ.单项填空1.解析:考查情景对话。

Canada is a country occupying most of northern North America, extending from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. The distance from east to west is over 5,500 kilometers. It is the world's second largest country by total area and its common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the world's longest. Beginning in the late 15th century, British and French expeditions explored, and later settled along the Atlantic coast. France gaveup nearly all of its colonies in North America in 1763 after the Seven Years' War. In 1867, with the union of three British North American colonies through Confederation, Canada was formed as a federal dominion of four provinces.
