C

Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter. The letter was from his teacher. “I got a red flower today. Could you please sign this note?” h e said to mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.

Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is “OK”, but he often gets “You can do better than this.” Mum knows what it means. She tells me “You can do better than this” means “Extremely bad” in China.

In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is “Please be nicer tomorrow”. Many parents are satisfied with a B-grade for each subject.

But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spend more time on homework than I did when I was 6th grade in the US! Yet his parents and teachers didn't think he worked hard enough.

Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true.

(1)Why did Ted come home with a letter last Friday?

A. Because the teacher wanted to visit his mother.

B. Because he did something wrong.

C. Because the teacher was happy with his progress.

D. Because the teacher thought he was too lazy.

(2)If a student i n the USA gets “OK” in his schoolwork, it means ________.

A. he gets top scores

B. he gets medium scores

C. he gets extremely bad scores

D. he gets the worst scores

(3)The underlined word s “high expectations” in this passage means “________”.

(4)The writer mainly wants to tell us ________.

A. the differences between Chinese education and American education

B. Chinese students are better than American students

C. American parents are not strict enough with their children

D. what's the best way to educate child

【答案】(1)B

(2)B

(3)C

(4)A

Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is "OK".

Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe

both are true. 故选A

Up to two thirds of children don't get as much sleep as they should do, and this can make them nervous and slow at school, researchers say.

So how long should young people sleep each night? The answer is between 8 and 10 hours. If you don't get enough sleep at night, you'll have less energy the next day.

But the researchers say many children have missed out on 4,500 hours of sleep by the time they are seven years old. They say that children miss sleep because they have TVs and computers in their rooms, and busy parents don't read to their younger children at night any more. The traditional “bedtime story” helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully. Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eight hours' sleep. Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.

German scientists think that your brain keeps working while you're asleep. To show that they were right, they gave two groups of people a problem to work out. One group went to sleep, and the other group stayed awake. The result? The people who slept worked out the answer more quickly, suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep. So, make sure you get enough sleep tonight, and you'll be at your best tomorrow!

(1)What happens to children at school if they don't get enough sleep?

A. They walk more slowly.

B. They can relax.

C. They watch more TV.

D. They do less well at school.

(2)The main idea of the second paragraph is .

A. how much sleep we need

B. children don't get enough sleep

C. our brains never really go to sleep

D. TVs and computers are the problem

(3)How does a bedtime story help children get a good sleep?

A. It helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.

B. Children lose more sleep.

C. Children have more energy.

D. Children get to sleep later.

(4)Why is it better to sleep in a room without a TV or computer?

A. You can read stories before you go to sleep.

B. You sleep better and get more sleep.

C. You have less energy.

D. Your brain works better.

(5)What did the German scientists' experiment show?

A. Sleep helps children learn to read.

B. Losing sleep means children don't learn well.

C. Your brain works while you are asleep.

D. Parents should read bedtime stories.

【答案】(1)D

(2)A

(3)A

(4)B

(5)C

由文中第三段最后一句话“Even losing one hour's sleep a night can mean that children do less well at school.”

根据第三段的“The traditional 'bedtime story' helps children to relax and fall asleep peacefully.”

根据第三段的“Children with TVs and computers in their bedrooms were more likely to sleep badly, and to get less than eigh t hours' sleep.”

将题干中的the German scientists' experiment定位在最后一段,根据suggesting their brains had been trying to find the answer while the people were asleep可知大脑在睡眠时运转的更好,故答案为C。

3D printing is becoming more and more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, prosthetic limbs (假肢), musical instruments(乐器)and so on. People and businesses are able to create the things they need very quickly and easily using 3D printers.

But can you imagine printing food? Some scientists are trying to revolutionize our eating experience by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as usual as the microwave or blender. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to choose a recipe and put the food "inks" into the printer. You can also change the instructions to make the food exactly how you want it. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create delicious meals.

Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment. There would be less need for traditional growing, transporting(运输) and packaging as food production would be quicker and easier.

Printing food could also help people who suffer from dysphasia They could program (为…编程)the printer to print softer versions of their favorite foods so that they would not have trouble eating them.

However, some people think that the future of 3D-printed food would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those for growing, transporting and packaging food. Imagine a world where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes could be printed from a raw "food ink". Similarly, traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business.

Also, there are worries about the printed food: is it really possible to get the nutrients (营养物) we need from food-based inks and gels?

What's more, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the fun of cooking is dead and meals can be done at the touch of a button.

(1)What should we do first if we want to print food?

A. Choose a recipe.

B. Program the printer.

C. Change the instructions.

D. Put food "inks" into the printer.

(2)What does the underlined word "revolutionize" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Remember clearly.

B. Take seriously.

C. Change completely.

D. Teach carefully.(3)Which could be the advantage (好处)of 3D food printing?

A. Saving the environment.

B. Giving people nutrients.

C. Helping with traditional farming.

D. Offering more job chances.

(4)Which is the best title of the passage?

A. Why is 3D printing so popular?

B. Will 3D printing be the future of food?

C. 3D food printers in the kitchens

D. Different opinions on 3D printing

【答案】(1)A

Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment.

It is hard to imagine a world where the fun of cooking is dead and meals can be done at the touch of a button.
