《英语新闻阅读》 艺术学院 00943608 金旻廷 E类 As one of the leading and prominent newspapers in the world, New York Times has become the focus and model for all the newspapers around the globe. There is much to look into and learn from it. Meanwhile, China Daily is one of the few English newspapers in China, which is also dominant in the English newspaper industry. Therefore, I am obliged to make some comparisons between the two newspapers, which I am sure can help us learn more about New York Times and on the other hand can help know about what improvement China Daily needs to make to one step closer to the world-class newspaper. I’ll mainly describe similarities and differences between new york times and China daily. First, from a few dictions of new york times and china daily. Usually if we see dictions in the news, we can know what the news regard important. And each press tends to put some dictions which they regard more important places in front of the lists. So, new york times put dictions about the world, which means that new york times is a kind of worldwide news On the contrary, china daily places emphasis on the things about China, and it means china daily regard it more important. But the thing which new York times and china daily are carrying the world news can be a common. In new York times, Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe, and so on, all the continents ‘s dictions were all open and more easily read the news from all over the world. On the contrary, in the China daily is not the same. It attached importance to some news about Asia. And two presses have news about their country and this also can be a common. New York times have information of news and also have more specialized things, for example, technology and sciences. In the technology and science dictions, there are some scientific knowledge, research, findings from all over the world and so on. But china daily rarely has technical knowledge. And then New York times specially have health news dictions, but china daily do not. It means that new york times pay more attention to the health of people, But this does not necessarily say that the China daily ignored the issue of people’s health. I’m just relatively speaking. But There is also another special thing which china daily has. China daily specially opens a discussion diction. Although in the new york times we can discuss about an issue, but in china daily it can be easier. Besides, both have sports news, but looking at dictions, we can acknowledge both country’s concern in sports. For instance, americans like football, baseball, hockey and so on, so the new York times have more information about them which are I have mentioned. New York times have “jobs”, “estate” dictions which are popular issue in the recent society, and readers can easily access to those news. It would be a advantages of new york times. Second, I’ll analyze from the perspective of the reader. First, readers of the New York Press are generally U.S. citizens, so some of the translations do not necessary. But most Chinese people do not see China daily, and the people who generally want to learn English can see it, so it needs translated news. And indeed there are several translations, for example, in chinese, in french and so on. Actually china daily in every diction have separate rooms where there are some tips for English learners, it called “language tips”. Moreover, there is the biggest difference between two of the newspapers. Because of one-party dictatorship in China, the Chinese media is manipulated by the government, all against the government's news and political scandals cannot appear in the media, so credibility is not high. For example, Events such as the Sanlu melamine in fact, the media and government have long been known, but they consider its negative impact on the Olympics, and they would have been reluctant to publish the public. M any media reported data is also affected by government pressure. However, the situation is different in the United States, the media not only can have truly free speech, they can also directly attacked the government, played the role of government oversigh. This is the largest and the most obvious differences between new york times and china daily. Last but not least, they also have a certain differences in comments. Many people
(including me) think that the comments of the New York times more serious and useful than the comments of China daily. There are some reasons for this. First, they have different
