Sixth InternatiOnal Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts December 14-16,2011

Summary Report The 6 International Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts, organised by the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering,The University of Hong Kong, was held in the Sheraton HK Hotels&Towers,Hong Kong during December 14—16,201 1. This is the first time that the APAC series has been held in Hong Kong. The Conference was first held in Dalian,China in 200 1,and it was subsequently held every two years in various locations including Japan(Chiba),Korea,China(Nanjing)and Singapore. The event is fully supported by the founding organisations of the conference, namely the Chinese Ocean Engineering Society, the Coastal Engineering Committee of Japan Society of Civil Engineers, and the Korean Society of Coastal and Ocean Engineers, and is financially sponsored by the K.C. Wong Education Foundation,Guangdong Provincial Changda Highway Engineering Co.Ltd.,the Croucher Foundation,Dragages HK Ltd.,Nishimatsu Construction Co.Ltd.and the Scottish Development Internationa1. . As a prelude of the Conference, the School of Energy and Environment of the City University of Hong Kong organised a pre—conference workshop on“Marine Energy Technology&Regional Status” on December 1 3,20 1 1,which aims to give an up—to—date technology and country status account of marine energy research and installations in the SE Asia region. After nearly two years of preparation, the Opening Ceremony of the Conference was held in the Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel on December 14,201 1.The Organizing Committee was honored to have Professor Lap—Chee Tsui, the Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Hong Kong, and Mrs.Carrie Lam,Secretary for Development of the HKSAR Government give opening and welcome remarks at the event. In the address, the Secretary for Development shared her views on the Hong Kong infrastructure development in recent years and stressed the importance of collaboration and partnership between the academia and the government departments. She also outlined two particular aspects, the harbour reclamation and the water quality, which the engineers in the government are working intensively on so as to create a quality city environment for Hong Kong people. The Conference was well attended by over 320 delegates from the academia, industry or government of more than 30 regions around the world. The technical programme of the conference consisted of 6 keynote lectures,4 invited lectures,1 0 contributions to the Special Session on the 20 1 I East Japan Tsunami, and more than 230 other contributions arranged in various oral and poster sessions. The 6 keynote lectures were delivered by Harindra J.S.Femando,Cameron M.Johnstone, Peidong Lu,Hajime Mase,Kyung—Duck Suh and Harry Yeh.These keynote and oral presentations cover a wide range of topics related to coasml, ocean and harbour engineering, including beach erosion and morphodynamics, climate change and sea level rise, coastal management and shore protection, estuaries and ports, hydrodynamics of offshore and coastal structures, marine ecology and environment, II China Ocean Eng.,26(J),2012,I一,, marine and offshore wind energy, seawater intrusion, sediment transport, tsunami and storm surges, waves and tides, wastewater disposal and water quality. The flail papers of these presentations, edited by Joseph Hun-wei Lee and Chiu-On Ng,are collected in the e-book“ASIAN AND PACIFIC COASTS 20 1 1-Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Asian and Pacific Coasts(APAC 20 1 1),Hong Kong,1 4—1 6 December 20 1 1”published by w0r1d Scientific: <http://www.worldscibooks.com/books/engineering/8253.html>. The dinner banquet was held at the end of the Conference on December 1 6,20 1 l where a hand— over ceremony was hosted by Professor Joseph Hun—wei Lee to introduce Professor Dadang Ahmad Suriamihardja.the Local Organising C ommittee Chairman who will host the next APAC20 1 3 to be held in Bali.Indonesia.The evening ended with a display of exotic dance by the talented Indonesian Youth Dance Troupe maintained by the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Hong Kong, and a Tmditional Chinese music performance by the Lok Sum Orchestra. The Conference proved to be a great opportunity and platform for inspiring and stimulating interactions and discussions among engineers, managers, practitioners and researchers in coastal, port, and ocean engineering and other related fields. It has also led to more cooperation and coilaboration within the scientific and engineering communities.and provided an extremely valuable educational experience for many research postgraduate students who presented their papers.
