Looking at cities can give a special pleasure, however commonplace the sight
may be. Like a piece of architecture, the city is a construction in space, but
one of vast scale, a thing perceived only in the course of long spans of time.
City design is therefore a temporal art, but it can rarely use the controlled and
limited sequences of other temporal arts like music. On different occasions
and for different people, the sequences are reversed, interrupted, abandoned,
cut across. It is seen in all lights and all weathers.
At every instant, there is more than the eye can see, more than the ear can
hear, a setting or a view waiting to be explored. Nothing is experienced by
itself, but always in relation to its surroundings, the sequences of events

American Place Names and Their Culture
Abstract: American place names have a closely connection with American history
and culture. We will get much information related to American culture toward
studying the living fossil,American place names, created by history, culture,
environment, and so on. Place name mirrored the social changes and historical
changes, even the special culture of one country. The fifty U.S. states have taken their
names from a wide variety of languages. The names of 24 states derive from
indigenous languages of the Americas and one from Hawaiian: eight from Algonquian
languages, seven from Siouan languages, three from Iroquoian languages, one from
Uto-Aztecan language, and five from other Native American languages. Twenty-two
other state names derive from European languages: seven come from Latin, five come
