1.Introduction

Traitemotionalintelligence(traitEIortraitemotionalself-effi-

cacy)isdefinedasaconstellationofemotionalself-perceptionslo-

catedatthelowerlevelsofpersonalityhierarchies(Petrides,Pita&

Kokkinaki,2007).Theconstructprovidesacomprehensiveopera-

tionalizationoftheaffect-relatedaspectsofpersonalityandlies

1993).TraitEIessentiallyconcernsindividualdifferencesinpeo-

ple’sself-perceptionsoftheiremotionalabilities.

Conceptually,animportantadvantageoftraitEItheoryisthatit

areparticularlyusefulwhentacklingnovelresearchquestionsfor

whichthereisnopriorempiricalliterature(e.g.,Sánchez-Ruiz,

Pérez-González,&Petrides,inpress).Psychometrically,theTrait

EmotionalIntelligenceQuestionnaire(TEIQue),asthemainopera-

tionalizationvehicleoftraitEItheory,providessuperiorcriterion

andpredictivevalidityrelativetootherEIquestionnaires(see

Freudenthaler,Neubauer,Gabler,&Scherl,2008;Gardner&Qualt-

er,inpress).

Numerousstudieshavebeenconductedwiththeshortformof

theTEIQueshowingthatitcorrelatespositivelywithorgasmicfre-quencyinwomen(Burri,Cherkas,&Spector,2009),generalwell-

beingandjobsatisfaction(Singh&Woods,2008),relationshipsat-

humor(Vernonetal.,2009),andnegativelywithcommunicative

anxiety(Dewaele,Petrides,&Furnham,2008),Machiavellianism

(Alia,Amorima,&Chamorro-Premuzic,2009),andmaladaptive

stylesofhumor(Vernonetal.,2009).Ithasalsobeensuggested

thattheTEIQue-SFhasaninvertedUrelationshipwithreaction

time(Austin,2009)andthatitmediatesmanyofthelinksbetween

personalityandgeneralhealth(Johnson,Batey,&Holdsworth,

2009).

Theaimofthisreportistoexaminetherelationshipsbetween

WeexpectedthatthestrongestcorrelatesoftraitEIwouldbeNeu-
