1.Introduction
Traitemotionalintelligence(traitEIortraitemotionalself-effi-
cacy)isdefinedasaconstellationofemotionalself-perceptionslo-
catedatthelowerlevelsofpersonalityhierarchies(Petrides,Pita&
Kokkinaki,2007).Theconstructprovidesacomprehensiveopera-
tionalizationoftheaffect-relatedaspectsofpersonalityandlies
whollyoutsidethetaxonomyofhumancognitiveability(Carroll,
1993).TraitEIessentiallyconcernsindividualdifferencesinpeo-
ple’sself-perceptionsoftheiremotionalabilities.
Conceptually,animportantadvantageoftraitEItheoryisthatit
linkstheconstructtomainstreamscientificmodelsindifferential
psychology,suchastheBigFiveandtheGiantThree.Theselinks
areparticularlyusefulwhentacklingnovelresearchquestionsfor
whichthereisnopriorempiricalliterature(e.g.,Sánchez-Ruiz,
Pérez-González,&Petrides,inpress).Psychometrically,theTrait
EmotionalIntelligenceQuestionnaire(TEIQue),asthemainopera-
tionalizationvehicleoftraitEItheory,providessuperiorcriterion
andpredictivevalidityrelativetootherEIquestionnaires(see
Freudenthaler,Neubauer,Gabler,&Scherl,2008;Gardner&Qualt-
er,inpress).
Numerousstudieshavebeenconductedwiththeshortformof
theTEIQueshowingthatitcorrelatespositivelywithorgasmicfre-quencyinwomen(Burri,Cherkas,&Spector,2009),generalwell-
beingandjobsatisfaction(Singh&Woods,2008),relationshipsat-
isfaction(Smith,Heaven,&Ciarrochi,2008),andadaptivestylesof
humor(Vernonetal.,2009),andnegativelywithcommunicative
anxiety(Dewaele,Petrides,&Furnham,2008),Machiavellianism
(Alia,Amorima,&Chamorro-Premuzic,2009),andmaladaptive
stylesofhumor(Vernonetal.,2009).Ithasalsobeensuggested
thattheTEIQue-SFhasaninvertedUrelationshipwithreaction
time(Austin,2009)andthatitmediatesmanyofthelinksbetween
personalityandgeneralhealth(Johnson,Batey,&Holdsworth,
2009).
Theaimofthisreportistoexaminetherelationshipsbetween
traitEIandtheBigFiveusingtheDutchadaptationoftheshort
formoftheTEIQue.Thestudyisimportantbothfromapsychomet-
ricperspective,giventhattherehavebeenfewsystematicinvesti-
gationsoftheTEIQue-SFandtheBigFive,aswellasfromacross-
culturalperspective,sincethisisthefirstinvestigationoftheTEI-
Que-SFinaDutchsample.Moreparticularly,wewillbefocusing
onthezero-ordercorrelationsbetweenthefivetraitEIscores(glo-
baltraitEI,plusscoresonthefourfactorsofEmotionality,Self-con-
trol,Sociability,andWell-being)andtheBigFive,aswellason
multipleregressionanalysesaimingtodeterminetheoverallex-
tenttowhichtheBigFivecanpredicteachofthetraitEIvariables.
WeexpectedthatthestrongestcorrelatesoftraitEIwouldbeNeu-
roticism,followedbyExtraversionandConscientiousnessandthat
over50%ofthevarianceinglobaltraitEIscoreswouldbeac-
countedforbyalinearcombinationoftheBigFivefactors.
