Sample writing

Never Too Old to Learn

We human beings started to learn as soon as we were born, ranging from identifying mom and dad to learning how to call things according to their names. We received a series of school education as well as non-school education during the course of growing up. And we become physically and mentally mature at some time when we can start to live independently in society, which owes to learning and shows its irreplaceable significance.

Some people, however, argue that it is not necessary for us to continue learning after we start our career. Maybe this was true if time rolls back to hundreds of years ago when the accumulation of knowledge of human beings was at a low level. On the contrary, we would be stunned looking at the pace of our society’s development. Knowledge and information update themselves with periods which become shorter and shorter. It is not unimaginable anymore that the world changes a lot during the interval of closing and opening your eyes.

We cannot propose a life without learning in such a fast-paced society, for we probably would become outdated if we stop learning after we graduate. It is only through the life-long learning that we can catch up with the changing society.

spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best

answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then write your

answer in the corresponding place on your Answer Sheet.

Passage One

A moment’s drilling by the dentist may make us nervous and upset. Many of us cannot stand pain. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may last perhaps a minute or two, we demand the needle—a shot of novocaine—that deadens the nerves around the tooth.

Now it’s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust

to the world. Without our nerves—and our brain, which is a bundle of nerves—we wo uldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture is based on the human body being open to pain.

But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle right through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.

The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, “This will hurt a little,” it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.

Questions 5 to 7 are based on the passage you have just heard.

5. What is the passage mainly about

6. What is TRUE about the Indian fakir

7. What is the most important thing to handle pain

Passage Two

There are many theories about the beginning of drama in ancient Greece. The one most widely accepted today is based on the assumption that drama evolved from ritual. The argument for this view goes as follows. In the beginning, human beings viewed the natural forces of the world ---- even the seasonal changes ---- as unpredictable, and they sought through various means to control these unknown and fearful powers. Those measures which appeared to bring the desired results were then retained and repeated until they hardened into fixed rituals. Eventually stories arose which explained or veiled the mysteries of the rites. As time passed some rituals were abandoned, but the stories, later called myths, persisted and provided material for art and drama.

Those who believe that drama evolved out of ritual also argue that those rites contained the seed of theater because music, dance, masks, and costumes were almost always used. Furthermore, a suitable site had to be provided for performances and when the entire community did not participate, a clear division was usually made between the “acting area” and the “auditorium”. In addition, there were performers, and, since considerable importance was attached to avoiding mistakes in the enactment of rites, religious leaders usually assumed that task. Wearing masks and costumes, they often impersonated other people, animals, or supernatural beings, and mimed the desired effect ---- success in hunt or battle, the coming rain, the revival of the Sun ---- as an actor might. Eventually such dramatic representations were separated from religious activities.

Another theory traces the theater’s origin from the human interest in storytelling. According to these ties, tales (about the hunt, war, or other feats) are gradually elaborated, at first through the use of impersonation, action, and

dialogue by a narrator and then through the assumption of each of the roles by a different person. A closely related theory traces theater to those dances that are primarily rhythmical and gymnastic or that are imitations of animal movements and sounds.

Questions 8 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.

8. Where did drama begin according to many theories

9. What is the route of drama’s evolution according to another theory

10. Why is drama related to dances

Section C

Directions: You are going to hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. Then

listen again and fill in the blanks with what you have heard. When the

passage is read for the third time, check what you have written. Then write

your answer in the corresponding place on your Answer Sheet.

Life undeniably has its ups and downs. One moment you are happy and the other you are already sad. This is said to be the paradox of life. However, you cannot do anything about this reality but to deal with it. After all, one of your overall missions here on earth is to deal with life and be successful. Dealing with life and being a successful individual may seem to be just a piece of cake. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as that. Thus, there are times when personal development skills are deemed to be essential in order for you to deal with life easier as well as to be successful without a hitch.

Personal development simply refers to ways on improving yourself for your own sake. It actually includes means and activities on how you can enhance your overall personality without any hassles at all. Furthermore, personal development also teaches you how to interact with other kinds of people and how to deal with things conveniently and optimistically. As a matter of fact, there are instances when personal development needs some skills coming from you in order for you to be successful in life as well as to be happy with who you are and what you have in life.

The skills associated with personal development are already within your system. You simply have to be aware of those skills. The following are surely some of your personal development skills which emanate from you and may need further improvements: optimism, honesty and knowing the real you.

Indeed, personal development skills are already present in your system as a human. You just have to be aware of your skills in order to further enhance your personality, be on seventh heaven, and be the most successful person that you can be.

He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics:the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong. Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others. Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning,or simply relaxing,we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Out need for human contacts is not merely a practical one;it is a deep psychological need as well. If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result. Even the Geneva Convention(日内瓦公约),an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need. It regards solitary (孤独的)imprisonment for more than thirty day as a cruel form of torture(折磨)。 In its strictest sense, a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expe ctations about one another‘s behavior. As result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of“belonging.”They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders. 21.By“No man is an island,”John Donne means _____. A.no one can live on an island alone B.a man is not surrounded by sea on all sides C.a man and an island are irrelevan D.no one can live in isolation from other people 22.The fact that we work or even play in groups illustrates the point that ____. A.poeple are different from animals B.Donne recognized the group to which he belonged C.human beings are social animals D.human behavior and personalities are formed by others 23.“Breakdown”as used in Line 6,Paragraph 2 most probably denotes ____. A.separation B.collapse C.analysis D.function 24.According to the passage, what is NOT a characteristic of group? A.There are at least two people in it. B.The members share some common grounds. C.The members work for one purpose. D.The members interact regularly with each other. 25.This passage is mainly about _______. A.the importance of human contacts B.pattens of human behavior C.the importance of human activities D.patterns of human society Passage Two Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.
