4. 差异系统
能指与所指之间的联系是任意的(arbitrary)：一个单词的 发音，同它地表的概念之间不存在必要联系。
如：某一种植物的概念，中文：树；英文：tree；法文： arbor。为何？没有道理可讲。

1. 能指 vs. 所指 符号：古希腊文：semeion，英文：sign。 语言符号（sign system)：语言研究作为独立的“符号系统”

索绪尔指出，作为语言结构基本成分的语言符号，“联结的不是事物 和名称，而是概念和音响形象”。
20世纪二十年代，在索绪尔结构语言学的影响和启发下， 结构主义研究方法应运而生。英国学者特伦斯-霍克斯指 出，“结构主义基本上是关于世界的一种思维方式”。
结构主义者坚持认为客观世界即使是真实的，也是可以被 “科学地”认识的，只是构成客观世界的事物的本质不存 在于单个事物本身，而是存在于事物与事物之间的关系中：
格学派、以及现代结构主义联系起来的重要理论家。他通过自己的 观察说明，人类的言语活动确实存在索绪尔所说的两个基本向度， 它们构成纵横交叉的两轴。 语言的诗性功能是“把对等原则从选择轴引向组合轴”，即语言的 诗性功能得之于把日常言语活动中只在联想关系中展开的词，放在 句段中同时加以表现。
代表了语言研究向符号学的过渡。
