Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our Topics in Focus. The honored guests

who we have invited today are Professor Zhou from Confucius Institute abroad and Lucy

from the Nanjing University. Nice to meet you.

C Nice to meet you.

L Nice to meet you.

S

This week we are about to discuss something about a well-known language, Chinese. As is

known to all, Chinese, namely, the common language of the Han nationality, is also the

language which has a largest number of users on a global scale.

L Many of the students in the USA are interested in Chinese from the products made in China.

Following the increasing international trade, Chinese is universally adopted throughout the

world.

C That is the truth. In recent years, more and more politicians, lawyers, business elites and

media advocates have attended the courses conducted by the Confucius Institute abroad. I

have a strong feeling that Chinese is so popular in other regions that just like English is

popular in China.

S A

mature language bases on a profound culture background. Some linguists infer that it is

highly possible for Chinese to become the most popular language in the world within around

50 years. Then, what is your attitude towards this opinion?

L I love Chinese very much and learn Chinese by heart. However, I still find it too difficult to do

well in

speaking Chinese. China has a history longer than 5000 years, so Chinese

culture

enriches the substances of the language. In addition, China is a country located in the East, the

origin of civilization development differs a lot from the West. It is pretty hard for Westerns to

accept this kind of language and use it as a skillful tool to communicate.

S So the origin of culture may reject the spread of Chinese.

C Actually, cultures are harmony in diversity. Chinese, as one of the most perfect languages, has

run a long course from a remote source. It lives through several conquests. Its fascination even

conquers other nationalities in history. Nowadays, Chinese is on the road of standardization

and unification while adapting the rapidly changing society. Unlike English, it is able to name

a new object or describe a new phenomenon without creating a new character.

S Yes, time will tell. There is only one country using Chinese as the mother language, but more

than 170 countries and regions using English as the official language at present.

L The largest number of users does not represent the width of the use. It is an obvious fact that

China has a largest population in the world. Chinese is becoming popular, but is a kind of

language without expansion due to its national characteristic. It is not so easy to globalize

Chinese anyway.

C Acting as a mother tongue of only one country

is not a pity. Although there are

many

differences in Chinese in different parts of the country, the continual communication develops

the language in a same direction. On the contrary, during the colonization, English has been

added into various types of culture origins and emerges the different types of English which

are not mutual acceptable.

S Language is a tool for communication worldwide. We hope all the languages will develop

healthily in the future. Thank you very much for coming to our program. It was really a great

pleasure having a discussion. Well, that is the end of today’s talk show. Thank you for your

attention. See you next week.
