Themostcommonmethodofcontrollingthestructureofaproductinasolvothermalsynthesisusesstructuredirectingagents(SDAs,sometimesalsocalledtemplates).Inthesynthesisofporousmaterialssuchaszeolitesandsometypesofcoordinationpolymerstheseareoftenorganiccationsofvaryingsizes,whichareincorporatedintothestructureoftheproduct.Templatingismuchlesscommoninthepreparationofcoordinationpolymermaterialsbutcanstillproduceinterestingsolids.InthisCommunicationwereportanalternativemethodofcontrollingthestructureofaproductinasolvothermalreactionofcoordinationpolymers.Inthismethodweusetheanionspresentinionicliquidstocontrolthestructureofmaterialsformedinionothermalsynthesis.Thecationsoftheionicliquid,whichinthisstudyarealwaysthesame,areincorporatedintotheresultantmaterials,buttheanionsarenot.Ofparticularinterestisthatmixedanionionicliquidsshowdifferentproductselectivitytosingleanionliquids,indicatingthelevelofstructuredirectionavailableinthissyntheticmethodology.Ionothermalsynthesishasbeenusedrecentlytoproducezeo-types,1,2supramoleculararchitectures,3andcoordinationpolymers/metalorganicframeworks(MOFs).4,5Todate,muchofthework

onionothermalsynthesishasconcentratedontheuseof1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumbromide(EMIm-Br)asthesolvent.Ionicliquidshavebeenreferredtoas“designersolvents”astheirproperties,includingmeltingpoint,density,viscosity,andmiscibil-itywithwater,canbeeasilyalteredbyjudiciouschoiceofcationsandanions.6Theinfluenceoftheaniondeservesparticularattention;

forexample,replacingtheBr-inEMIm-Brwithbis((trifluorom-

ethyl)sulfonyl)amide(Tf2N-)dramaticallydecreasesthemelting

point(from81to-3°C)andthewatersolubility(fromhighlywater-solubleto1.4wt%watercontentsaturatedat20°C).7EMIm-

Tf2Ndisplaysexceptionalproperties,combininghighhydrophobic-

ity,lowpolarity,goodthermalstability,lowviscosity,andaverylowmeltingpointandhasbeenusedinsyntheticandelectrochemi-calapplications.7bNevertheless,veryfewinvestigationshavebeen

carriedoutonhowthechoiceofanioninILsaffectsthereactionoutcomeinmaterialssynthesis,althoughourrecentillustrationofchiralinductionbyachiralILanionisoneexample.5Herewereportfourcobaltcompounds(EMIm)2[Co3(TMA)2-(OAc)2]1,(EMIm)[Co(TMA)]2,[Co5(OH)2(OAc)8](H2O)x3,and

(EMIm)[Co2(TMA)4H7(22bpy)2]4(TMA)trimesateand22bpy

)2,2′-bipyridine).8,9Thecontrollingfeatureofthesynthesisis

theILanionchosen.Compound1isformedusingEMIm-Brasthesolvent,3and4whenEMIm-Tf2Nisthesolvent,and2when

amixtureofEMIm-BrandEMIm-Tf2N(1:1molarratio)isused.

Compound1wassynthesizedfromEMIm-Brinasealedautoclaveandisisostructuraltothenickelanalogue(EMIm)2[Ni3-(TMA)2(OAc)2].4aTheliquidsolubilizesallthestartingmaterials

verywell,andthemechanismofformationappearsbesolutionmediated.Thewholenetworkcanbedescribedasa(3,6)-connectednetconstructedbyoctahedralCo3(µ2-η1:η2-CH3COO)2(µ2-RCOO)4

(chelating-RCOO)2secondarybuildingunits(SBUs)andtopologi-

cally3-connectedTMAligands.

Whenthereactionwascarriedoutinalesspolar,morehydrophobicsolvent,thatis,usinganEMIm-Br/EMIm-Tf2N(1:1

molarratio)mixtureadifferent3Danionicframework2wasformed.TheoverallstructureisbuiltfromdinuclearCo2(syn,anti-

COO)2(mono-COO)4secondarybuildingunits(SBUs)whereeach

cobaltistetrahedrallycoordinated(Figure1).FourSBUsarearrangedinrectangulargridswithdimensionsof∼5Å×11Å,andwhicharefurtherarrangedinaherringbonepackingmodeintheabplanetoformaninfinitelayer.Differentlayersareconnectedintoa3DnetworkthroughstackinginanABABsequence.Thestaggeredlayersresultinrectangularvoidspacewithsmallwindowsof∼4Å×4Åalongthec-axis.EachrectangularvoidencapsulatestwoEMIm+ionstocompensatethenegative-chargeofthe

framework.Thesolventpolarityhasgreatinfluenceonthecoordinationbehaviorsofthemetalatoms,andthepartialreplacementofEMIm-
