A Brief Analysis on the Abandonment by
Beauty, Strength, Discretion and Five-wits
11级英语语言文学陈梦
As the matter of fact, when I first read Everyman, I did not realize the innate connection among Beauty, Strength, Discretion, Five-wits and Knowledge. In the 4th scene, all of them above mentioned chose to abandon Everyman except Good Deeds and we may easily draw the conclusion that only one's good behaviour or good reputation will be along with him and live eternally.
However, when I read it again and think twice, this kind of abandonment that Beauty, Strength, Discretion, Five-wits and Knowledge have done is absolutely different from that of Fellowship, Kindred and Goods`. The abandonment of Fellowship, Kindred and Goods` is due to their shallow relationships with Everyman. These seemingly good fellows at ordinary times are nothing in dangerous moment. On the contrary, the abandonment by Beauty, Strength, Discretion, Five-wits and Knowledge is not forsaking in a real sense but a no-choice move as no one can own his beauty, strength, discretion, five-wits and knowledge forever. This is natural law. When we at 60 some, we may lose our beauty ; at 70, strength; 80, discretion; 90, five-wits...when we die, we surely cannot take our knowledge with us as we are not able to think any more. In fact, the order of these abandonments are also arranged by the author carefully
though it seems very casual. Y ears after years, A human being will be in age and he is doomed to lose his beauty first, then strength, discretion, five-wits as well as knowledge. Therefore, standing in this point of view, we may even say that Everyman is not the abandonee but the abandoner as time forces him to cast away his Beauty, Strength, Discretion, Five-wits and Knowledge.
In the end, we may come to a wider conclusion that no matter how popular, rich , beautiful, strengthful, discreet, smart, knowledgeable we are, after our death, we leave nothing but our Good Deeds!。
