II. 课文词汇填空
(A-1)
Many people are frightened of spiders. They think spiders are nasty and should be killed.
However, they are a kind of useful creature which is different from insects. In part of China,
farmers build shelters for spiders in autumn to help them survive the cold winter. When
spring comes, they emerge healthy and hungry, and fill their stomachs with insects that attack
the farmers’ crops and protect their farms. And this kind of pest control is being copied by
foreign countries.
In addition, spiders are useful in other fields. The silk that spiders make their webs with
they make are stronger than steel, and as elastic as rubber band, whose properties have
inspired scientists to make artificial organs and bullet-proof vests. Their poison can also be
used to treat brain disorders.
(A-2)
Spiders are useful creatures. They are the enemies of insects and friends of humans.
Chinese farmers even build shelters for them to help them survive winter. In return, spiders
3 help to protect the farmers’ crops when spring comes. The silk of spiders is light, strong and
elastic. Scientists are trying to develop a similar material and use it in spacecrafts, artificial
organs, and bulletproof vests. Spiders’ bites are rarely dangerous to people. Their poison
might be used to treat brain disorders in humans.
(B)
Many creatures use hibernation to get through cold weather and the absence of food in
winter. Bats, for example, find a cave where they can hang upside down, with their pulse and
breathing rates greatly slowing down. Frogs dig deep into the mud in a pond, and stop
stirring until it gets warm again. Unlike bats and frogs, bears that sleep in their dens appear
as if they are very sleepy while hibernating. If disturbed, they can get up very quickly.
(C)
The school counselor received letters asking for advice from the students.
One student said that her friend accidentally knocked a flowerpot off the balcony of the
high-rise building. The pot smashed on the ground, narrowly missing some children at play.
Because she got frightened, she didn’t tell the truth to the police who came to question
everyone.
Another student saw three tough guys enter the almost empty carriage while traveling on
the underground. They teased and bullied a boy who was traveling alone. He did nothing to
stop this behavior, because he thought he hated violence. Obviously he now regrets not
helping the boy.
The third student failed to return the extra change that the checkout assistant gave him in
the supermarket. Actually, he meant to have corrected the error, but the assistant barked at
him and told him to wait his turn.
The counselor replied to these students. She commented that they showed a lack of
courage, and hesitated in these unexpected situations. She advised the first student to
persuade her friend to apologize to the boy, and the second one to try contacting the transport
police when encountering such thing, and the third one to return the extra change. She told
them that the best remedy for a __________________________ is to make things right.
(D)
According to one estimate, TV commercials have found a new target. They are Asian
children, the fastest growing consumer group. To get money from these young viewers, they
use children actors, who can make children identify with their own age group. Some
educators claim that kids are getting more materialistic and asking for money or possessions
from their parents.
To keep children from being turned into consumers, Television would ban an ad if it
made kids feel inferior for not owning the advertised products.
With reference to this phenomenon, some people think it is illegal for children to work as
actors for commercials, even if they can earn high salaries. Some people say that the things in
the commercials are silly and encourage violence. But some people think there is nothing
wrong with children’s earning or asking for money by using the example of the best-selling
