The Good Earth
Before I learn this lesson, how can I image that a foreigner could write such a novel which describe a true life of Chinese.
Pearl S. Buck was born in the USA but was brought to China when she is only three months old. She lived in China for about forty years. During this period, she learned the Chinese language and culture, besides, her parents taught her English and American culture. Therefore she knew well about the cultures’conflictsof two countries.
The novel mainly tells about the tragicstory of Chinese rural couples.Olan, who was a servant girl, married Wang Lung. Olan played a role of a good wife and loving mother in her family. But they lived a poor life. The only financial resource was the harvest from a small land. Once there was a disaster, they would get nothing to support their family. In this novel, the couple and their children had to cook the mud to eat because of a locust swarm. They also ate the tree barks and grass roots to kill their hunger.Believe it or not, the poor were forced to eat the dead flesh from those who was died of hunger. Later, the couple’s life became better because of their hardworking. But Wang Lung married a young concubine. Olan was sad, however, she didn’t complain. She still sewed the clothes and nurtured her children. She was always obedient and scrupulously abode by her duty. What she did makes me feel sorrier.
In the end, Wang Lung realized his mistakes and continued hard working, depending on the weather to have a big harvest. But Olan was dead. I was deeply moved by her virtue. Women like Olan were lowly in old China’s society, because they had a low position and a woman must follow her husband’s lot and position. This phenomenon caused many tragedies.
Thanks to Pearl S. Buck for her vivid description of old China. And not only show sympathy to the poor, we should also treasure present life more.。
