In the United States, parents usually encourage their
children to develop their potential (潜能). They pay attention
to what their kids can do, not what they can't. As a result, US
boys and girls hope to be actors, athletes and doctors; many
even want to become presidents when they grow up.
US parents often encourage their children to take part in
all kinds of activities at school. They believe that joining in
these activities can make their children mature (成熟).
Schoolwork is important, but they think that social skills are
important as well.
But things in China are different. Chinese parents often

Higher education in the United States
Higher education in the United States refers to the process of students continuing their education
beyond high school, and includes a variety of institutions of higher education. Strong research and
funding have helped make United States colleges and universities among the world's most

researchers in the pursuit of academic excellence.[1] According to the Shanghai Jiao Tong
University's Academic Ranking of World Universities, more than 30 of the highest-ranked 45
institutions are in the United States (as measured by awards and research output).[2] Public
universities, private universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges all have a significant
role in higher education in the United States.

America has had a great respect for education from its earliest times: The first group of
Puritans came to the new world in 1620 to avoid being persecuted in England and seek the

England
In the subsequent years, more Puritans came and founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony in
