The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment, ethnic diversity(多民族) and plural religion, which is quite different from other nations in the world. What is more,these elements are still influencing the American culture.1. Rough EnvironmentThe early immigrants who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of American. The environment there was very rough but they believed the poor land could purify their mind so they chose the place along the coast. From 1607 to 1892, frontiers were pushed further west. The American frontier consisted of the relatively unsettled regions of the United States, usually found in the western part of the country. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism, self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage(遗产) of American.2. Ethnic DiversityThe population of the United States includes a large variety of ethnic groups coming from many races, nationalities, and religions. People refer to the United States as "melting pot "and the dominant people are British. American is made up of WASP MM, that is,White, Anglo Sa某on, Protestants plus Middle Class and Male. In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to American three times. They brought their own culture to American and later on different cultures were mi某ed together. Thus the unique American culture is formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values.3. Plural religionThe fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the right of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious e某perience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism; almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States. Christianity(基督教) is the dominant religion in American and Protestant (新教)is predominate(主导)。

In what way did Puritanism influence American culture?A. Today, Puritans are no longer in existence. But their legacies are still felt in American society and culture。
For example,the Puritans hoped to build ”a city upon hill” an ideal community. Since that time, Americans have viewed their country as a great experiment,a worthy model for other nations. This sense of mission has been very strong in the minds of many Americans。
Was America founded as a Christian Nation?No matter how the secularists think it, they have to admit the fact that the United States started with Christianity. When the first group of people landed Plymouth and sat in the captain's room to write down the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620 by the Pilgrims. It was the famous document. People think it is the birth certificate of the United States. The passengers said that they had come for the glory of God and Christian faith, and that it was out of the understanding of this belief.These early colony people wrote many agreements that set up the way for the constitution of the United States, which began entirely with the covenant of the Church of Calvin. In 1636, they established a complete and detailed constitution on the basis of that. The constitution was designed by our founding fathers in 1776; it laid the foundation for this unique, free and Christian America.Secularists told us that most of the nation's founding fathers are secularists, and the government that they founded was secular. Amanda Marcotte claimed in her article for Alter/Slate “No, America is not a Christian Nation”that “our founding fathers did not believe our right came from God, instead, they believed our rights came from government, and they believed new rights could be invented.”I do not agree with Marcotte at all. First of all, in 1776, the founding fathers never heard or thought about anything that would make the country secular. There was no such thing as a "secular state" on this planet at that time.The founding fathers of the United States often cited the Bible in their writings and speeches at the time. Donald Lutz is a prominent well-respected professor ofpolitical philosophy at the University of Huston. According to his study that determines the influence of different sources on early American political thought, the most often cited thinkers are not natural science believers and philosophers, but are devoted Christians including Montesquieu, Blackstone and Locke. (Luz, 1984) The study data showed that in the section of Distribution of Citation by Decade the Bible topped the list by 34% of total number. (Luz, 1984) In the sections of Most Cited Thinkers by Decade and Ordering of Most Cited thinkers (1760-1805), Montesquieu, Blackstone and Locke topped the first three places by orders. (Luz, 1984) Patrick Henry was a Christian patriot and a very good speaker during the time of the revolution. In his most famous speech,"Give me liberty, or give me death!" that he made to the Second Virginia Convention on March 23, 1775, Henry said: “It is only in this way that we can hope to arrive at truth, and fulfill the great responsibility which we hold to God and our country.” Henry thought this great country was based on the root of Jesus Christ. For this reason, other people who have no faith still can enjoy the freedom and be protected.The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was a short document that was used by the Connecticut Colony council on January 15, 1639 and included some principles that were later used in creating the United States government. In the Fundamental Orders text, it stated “to maintain and preserve the liberty and purity of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus which we now profess, as also, the discipline of the Churches, which according to the truth of the said Gospel is now practiced amongst us; as also in our civil affairs to be guided and governed according to such Laws, Rules, Orders andDecrees…”The Fundamental orders showed that the Christian principles were primary and desirable guidance for the early colonists’ life in this new land.Thomas Paine, an English-American political activist, and revolutionary said in his “the crisis No. 1” that “God Almighty will not give up a people to military destruction, or leave them unsupportedly to perish, who have so earnestly and so repeatedly sought to avoid the calamities of war, by every decent method which wisdom could invent.” In this article, Paine expressed that America is blessed by God because their rights of freedom and their rights of fighting against tranny and injustice are given by God.John Locke said in The Second Treatise of Civil Government in 1689 (Chapter 2 Of the state of nature), that “In transgressing the law of nature, the offender declares himself to live by another rule than that of reason and common equity, which is that measure God has set to the actions of men, for their mutual security.” He believed the spirit of the law manifests God’s will.In 1787 northwest ordinance, it says, "religion, morality, and knowledge are important to good government and human happiness, and schools and educational institutions should always preach them.In United States Declaration of Independence adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, it stated that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that they are among these are life, libert y and the pursuit of happiness.” The declaration of independenceexpresses the truth that God is the creator, and that all men are created equal When Washington left office, he made a lengthy farewell speech that was considered one of the greatest speeches in American history. In his opinion of what religion is in the United States is that all the factors that lead to the prosperity of nature and habits, religion and morality are indispensable pillars. If a man tries to overthrow these, and believes that man can still attain the pillars of greatness and happiness, it is not correct for the man to call himself patriotic. It shows Washington respected the Christian principles are one of the most important foundations for this newly established country.Samuel Adams, the American Revolution political figure and a devoted Christian regarded himself as the last puritan. He is also known as the father of the American Revolution. For more than 20 years, his devotion to freedom has been well-known. Adams was the most important figure in the war of independence. He wrote "through careful reading and the great law promulgated by the Christian Church and these are clearly documented and published in the New Testament, from which people can understand these rights.” Wh en the declaration of independence was signed in 1776, Adams declared, "we give the day to the ruler, and all men should obey him. He is in charge of heaven and earth. From sunrise to sunset, may his kingdom come.” In the declaration of independence, it stated that the United States is "the only king is Jesus."The constitution is based on the declaration that all men are endowed by God with certain given rights. The constitution has the responsiblity to protect individual liberty. The constitution is based on the founding fathers' understanding that man isguilty. As a result, they decentralize power, administration and legislation, separate legislation and justice, so that no one group is on the other.If the founding fathers of the new country wanted the United States to become secular, why did they carry out so many religious rules when it came to managing the people? The first Ordinance passed by the first Congress, the same men who wrote the first amendment, invited the pastor to pray during the house and Senate sessions. There are some many historic events and the stories of important political figures that brought Christian values and thinking to the establishment of this country.
