flowering.ThisswitchiscontrolledbyenvironmentalAreParalogousGenes

and/orintrinsicdevelopmentalcuesthatconvergeatInArabidopsis,theBEL1-like(BELL)homeoboxgene

theshootapicalmeristem(SAM)[1–4].DuringthisPENNYWISE(PNY),alsoknownasBELLRINGERand

developmentaltransition,floralinductivesignalsREPLUMLESS,playsaroleinpatterningoftheinternode

causethevegetativemeristemtoundergomorpholog-andpedicelduringinflorescencedevelopment[7–9].To

(Figure1B).Reversetranscriptase(RT)-PCRusinggenespecificprimerstoPNFandACTIN8(ACT8)showedthatInfloweringplants,thetimingofthetransitionfromveg-

PNFcDNAwasonlyamplifiedinwild-typesamples,etativegrowthtofloweringiscontrolledbyenvironmen-

whileapproximatelyequalamountsofACT8cDNAweretalconditionsand/orintrinsicdevelopmentalsignalsto

synthesizedinallthreesamples(Figure1B).Thesere-ensurereproductivesuccess[1–3].InArabidopsis,flow-

sultsshowedthatbothT-DNAinsertionsinPNFcreatederingisinducedbylong-dayphotoperiods,vernaliza-

mRNAnullmutants.tion,andtheplanthormonegibberellin(GA)[2,3].In

contrast,temperatemaizeisdayneutralandflowersafteraspecificnumberofleavesareproduced[1].De-TheTransitionfromVegetativetoReproductive
