Period 2 (Section A 3a-3c)教案

I. Teaching objectives: By the end of the class, students should be able to:
1) know some information about Qomolangma;
2) use the reading skills of skimming, scanning, careful reading to
analyze reading materials;
3) learn to face their difficulties in their lives instead of giving up.
II. Teaching contents: Words and expressions: achievements, southwestern, thick, include,
freezing, condition, take in, succeed, challenge,
in the face of, achieve, force, nature, even
though=even if.
III. Teaching procedures:
Step1. Lead in: Quiz What’s the longest river/the oldest country/the most dangerous sport in the
world? (Review the ways of reading a large number and lead in today’s topic.)
Step2. Pre-reading:
1) Guess: What’s the name of the mountain?
(Ss describe the picture on P51 and present some new expressions.)
2) Skimming: Match the main idea of each paragraph.
Step3. While-reading:
1) Para 1: Facts and dangers
Scanning: Scan for the location and height of Qomolangma.
Careful reading: Fill in the blanks and list the danger for climbers.
Are there any people got to the top before?
2) Para 2: Achievements of climbers
Careful reading: Match the successful climbers and the dates.
Why do so many people try to climb the mountain even though it is dangerous?
3) Para 3: Spirit of climbers
Careful reading: Why do so many climbers risk their lives?
What does the spirit of the climbers tell us?
Step4. Post-reading:
Discussion: Is Qomolangma the most dangerous that no one can reach the top?
How to reach the top?
In your opinion, what is the most difficult thing in your life? Is it study, health,
relations with parents or others?
How to face it and succeed in it?
Step 5: Summary: Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
IV. Homework: As a student, study is also a mountain for us to climb. What will we do in the
face of our study? Will we give up or face it? Write a short passage to show our ideas.
