AbstractOneofthekeycomponentsinamultimediainteractivesystemisthecontinuousmediaserver.Inthispaper,wefirstpresentthedesignandthearchitectureofsuchaserverdedicatedtosupportthestorage,retrievalanddeliveryofvideostreams.Themainfeatureoftheproposedserverisitsindependenceofanyphysicalconfiguration,soguaranteeingitsportability.Afterthat,basedonthetargetapplication(videorepositories),wehaveproposedanewschedulingtechniquethattakesintoaccountthedatastructuration.Tocopewiththedifficultiesimpliedbythecontent-basedretrieving,amodelingprocessdividesavideoinseveraloverlappingstreams.Wearguethattheservercanusethisknowledgeinordertopromotemediasharingbetweenusersrequestingoverlappedstreams.Thesimulationresultsshowtheeffectivenessoftheproposedapproach.

1IntroductionRecentadvancesincomputingandcommunicationtechnologieshavemadeitpossibletoprovideon-lineaccesstovideoclips.Thisisduetotheavailabilityofhardwareandsoftwaretools(highbandwidthnetworks,newstoragedevicesandtechnologies,...)forhandlingdigitalvideoandaudiodata.Theadvantagesofdigitalstorageofcontinuousdataarenumerous[13].Infact,manyapplicationsusecontinuousdata,rangingfromprofessionalactivitiestoentertainment.Allofsuchapplicationsneedaunifiedinformationsystemcalledmultimediainformationsystemwhichintegratescommunication,storageandpresentationmechanismsfordiversedatatypeincludingtext,images,audioandvideo.Tosupportaudioandvideodata,multimediadatabasemanagementsystemsneedtodealwithseveraltoughissues.First,continuousdata(audioandvideo)aredelay-sensitive.Oncestarteddisplayingdata,thesystemmustgaranteethatenoughresources(diskbandwidth,bufferspace,etc.)areavailablesothattherealtimerequirementsandcontinuityarenotviolated.Second,continuousdata(evencompressed)haveahugevolumeandconsequentlyconsumelargeamountsofsystemresourcesmainlystoragespaceandbandwidth.Third,duetothedatatypediversityofamultimediaobjet(text,video,audio,etc.),thesystemmustensurethatthesedifferentstreamscanbesynchronizedduringpresentation.Regardlesstheseinherentrequirements,themainobjectiveofsuchsystemsistodealwithvideoinformationretrievaldifficulties.Forinstance,oneistryingtolocateaspecificclipinavideosource,findingitcanbenotonlyatime-consumingandtediousprocessbutalsounreliable.IncooperationwiththeFrenchinstitute,INAandtheTVbroadcastingcorporation,FRANCE3,wewilldevelopavideorepositorywhereusers(mainlyreporters)canhaveaon-lineaccesstovideoarchives.NotedthatINAisresponsibleforstoring,underperfectconditions,allTVprogramsbroadcastedbyFrenchbroadcas-tingcorporationsandformakingthemaccessible.Naturally,thisinvolvesdeveloppingadistributedmultimediasystemwhichallowsuserstosearchandbrowsethevideoarchives.Obviously,thesystemwillprovidefacilitiesformanipulating,storingandeasilyretrievingvideodata.Hence,itdealswithseveralresearchareasrangingfromdatamodelingtodatastoringatthedisklevel.Inthispaperwefirstpresentthedesignofthesystemanditsrelatedaspects.Then,wefocusonthevideoserverwhichisresponsibleforstoringanddeliveringcontinuousdatawithinthetimelimitsimposed.Weproposeanovelschedulingtechniquebasedontheuseofdatastructuration.Tocopewiththedifficulties

AdvancesinDatabasesandInformationSystems,19971TheDesignofaHighPerformanceVideoServerforManagingTVArchivesimpliedbythecontent-basedretrieving,amodelingprocessdividesavideoinseveraloverlappingstreams.Wearguethattheservercanusethisknowledgebypromotingmediasharingbetweenusersrequestingoverlappedstreams.SharingofdatacanoccuratvariouslevelsinTVrepositoriesapplication.Sharingcanoccurwhensomenewsitemsaresharedbetweentopics,e.g.,newsonainternationaltradeagreementcanbeincludedinavarietyoftopicslikesports,politics,business,etc.Sharingofcontinuousmediacanalsooccuratthemedialevel,e.g.,fornewsitemsindifferentlanguages,additionalstorageisnecessaryonlyfortheaudiosegmentsasthevideosegmentscanbeshared.Thosekindsofsharingcanbehandledbythemodelingprocess[6].Inaddition,sharingisalsopossiblewhentherearemultiplerequestsforthesametopic.ThisisparticularlytrueinTVrepositoriesapplication.Inthispaper,wefocusonthistypeofsharingsincethisislikelytobemorefrequentandweexplorethepotentialbenefitsthatcanbeachievedthroughusingdatastructuration.Therestofthepaperisorganizedasfollows.Section2describestheworkrelatedtothisstudy.Section3presentsageneraloverviewoftheproposedsystem.Insection4,wefocusonthevideoserveranditsrelatedcomponents.Section5describesourproposedapproachfollowedbythepreliminarysimulationresults.Section7concludesthispaperandoutlinesourfuturework.
