Shortcoming of TCM
Traditional Chinese Medicine has a history of more than 5,000 years. It has
a
complete theory about the occurrence, development and treatment of
diseases.
According to TCM theory, the occurrence of diseases is the in coordination between
Yin and Yang and the treatment of diseases is the reestablishment of the equilibrium
between them. Yin and Yang are the two concepts from ancient Chinese philosophy
and they represent the two contradictories in everything. In TCM theory, Yin
and
Yang are used to explain physiological and pathological phenomena of the
body.
They’re also the principles of diagnosing and treating diseases. There are
two
common ways of TCM curing diseases: drug therapy and non-drug therapy. As
for
drug therapy, traditional medicines are used such as herbs, mineral, animals, etc. As
for non-drug therapy, there are acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, cupping.
But nowadays, more and more people prefer to see Western doctor than
TCM
when they are sick. In fact, I don’t believe in TCM either.
First, the TCM theory isn’t based on science. Few of its medicines can meet the
criteria for the modern medicine. Modern medicines have to be effective and
safe.
Some of the traditional Chinese medicines can be effective but most don’t
have
scientific data to support the claim. Before the advent of the modern science, it’s more
understandable to try them since no other alternatives. But for now, I don’t really see
the need to have this “traditional Chinese medicine” concept at all. While
people
enjoy the benefit of the modern medicine, they take pride for their so-called TCM, in
my opinion, causes more harm than good in a number of ways.
Second, safety is also a big problem. Not every herb is safe and
Chinese
medicines use a lot of heavy metals. Many
could cause long-term toxic effect. And
some theories are especially ridiculous. For example, TCM Says things that look like
an organ or body part are often not going to specifically aid that body part.
For
example, a root that looks like a heart or a spleen is most likely not going to
be
healthy for said heart or spleen. This may do harm to people’s health.
Another problem is huge waste of resources. For example, China still has many traditional medical schools where 9 out 10 students don’t believe in the
TCM
themselves. Then look at how much junk are produced in the name of TCM
that
would delay the proper treatment and have toxic effects for the patients.
TCM will stay for a while. In a way it is a face problem too for the Chinese. And
unfortunately, except for
Qinghaosu, a plant extract for treating malaria, China hasn’t
invented any single medicine that is scientifically proven effective and safe. If China
can come up with an effective and safe drug, then it is just a contribution to the world
medicines to fight diseases, just as many other countries have done. I am
looking
forward to that day to come
