Lesson 57 in the New Concept English Book 2 introduces
the use of the modal verb "must" to express logical deduction
or certainty.
The lesson begins by explaining that 'must' is used when
the speaker is certain about something because there is
strong evidence or logical reasoning. For example, if we see
dark clouds, we might say, "It must rain soon." In this case,
we are not guessing; we are certain based on the evidence of
dark clouds.
The example demonstrates that we use 'must' to talk about
the present or future. However, for the past, we use 'must
have.' For instance, if we see someone coming in with a wet
umbrella, we might remark, "It must have rained." Again, this
deduction is based on a certain piece of evidence. The lesson further explains that if we think something is

Lesson 58 A blessing in disguise?
The tiny village of Frinley is said to possess a 'cursed tree'. Because the tree was mentioned
in a newspaper, the number of visitors to Frinley has now increased. The tree was planted
near a church fifty years ago, but it is only in recent years that it has gained an evil reputation.
It is said that if anyone touches the tree, he will have bad luck; if he picks a leaf, he will die.
Many villagers believe that the tree has already claimed a number of victims. The vicar has
been asked to have the tree cut down, but so far he has refused. He has pointed out that the
tree is a useful source of income as tourists have been coming from all parts of the country
to see it. In spite of all that has been said, the tourists have been picking leaves and cutting

新概念英语第二册第57课课文重难点 further notes on the text
1.the assistant who served her did not like the way she was
dressed.
the way在这里表示"方式"、"样式",she was dressed为关系从句,修饰the way。
why is your aunt dressed in black?
2.…he told her that the dress was sold.……
3.she returned to the shop the following morning dressed in
a fur coat, with a handbag in one hand and a long umbrella in
the other.
它也能够变换位置,放在句首,其意义不变:dressed in a fur coat, she
he walked in the park with a dog behind him.
4.after seeking out the rude assistant, she asked for the
