When I graduated, I was by no means an exceptionally talented web developer. Like many graduates, I was clueless (一无所知的) which 31 to take when I left university, so I took a couple of gap years traveling around North America. After traveling, I returned home and 32 in a restaurant where I was offered an assistant manager role. 33 the offer was appealing, it occurred to me that if I didn't start inspiring my enthusiasm, soon I would find myself relying on a(n) 34 wage and stuck in a career routine.

At this time, in 2002, the digital industry was booming in the UK, and after looking into this area 35 , I realized I was very interested in 36 a career in web development. The main question was: "where do I start?" I had very little 37 knowledge or indeed skills in web development, and I couldn't get a job without the experience and skills 38 my belt. So, I put everything I had into learning more and finding a job in web-designing industry. I 39 my resume by post to every digital agency within 100 miles —making it clear I was 40 to work without pay if I could gain experience. This brought a few 41 ,but nothing suited my career ambitions or me.

Having 42 to find myself a training

武汉二中2013届高考模拟试题英语A卷第 6 页共 20 页

position within a company, I realized that if I wanted to get into this industry I would need to 43 my own opportunities. So, I asked a friend who owned a pub if I could design a website for him. I even asked for a small payment in advance which 44 me to complete the site quickly and to the 45 standard. It proved to be a great website, and a good investment for my friend, as it attracted new customers. Eventually, I 46 a local web development agency —which had already turned me down twice! —to take a look at my work. The company was 47 that I was not going to give up on my passion, and decided to take me 48 .

After being offered the post, I've learned when it comes to careers, persistence often 49 off. It demonstrates enthusiasm, commitment and drive; all attractive 50 in the eyes of an employer. So, don't give up if you don't get the placement or role first time round —sometimes persistence is all it takes to catch an employer's eye.

The fourth round of heavy smog to hit Beijing in four weeks has sent more people to the hospital with respiratory(呼吸的)illnesses and led to calls for laws to control the pollution.

Pan Shiyi, a famous real estate developer said he is planning to propose a Clean Air Act to the local government. As a representative to the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, he started an online survey at 9:20 a.m..Within three hours, more than 25,000 web users, or 99 percent of total respondents, welcomed his proposal on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter.

They have good reasons to stand alongside Pan. The latest round of haze reduced visibility to under 500 meters in many parts of the city. The smog has also led to a great increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly among children and the elderly. Anxious parents and doctors almost all blame the smoggy air for the illnesses. Though

武汉二中2013届高考模拟试题英语A卷第 8 页共 20 页

most schoolchildren are home for the winter holidays, the bad air can easily move indoors. Besides, ordinary medical masks fail to provide adequate protection, so some people have turned to gas masks and respirators.

The causes of the scary smog are rather mysterious, though experts blame uncontrolled emissions and the mountains around Beijing that trap pollution in winter, unless there is adequate wind to clear it away. Some critics have pointed fingers at China’s top two oil firms, China National Petroleum Corp and China Petrochemical Corporation, saying the companies’ outdated production technologies produce large quantities of substandard, high-polluting gas fuel.

Meanwhile, concerned Beijingers have moved their brainstorming sessions to cyberspace (网络空间). If Pan’s proposal for a Clean Air Act is adopted, netizens say the new law should include items providing for “car-free days” in times of smog, higher standards for vehicle fuel, stricter restrictions on industrial and exhaust gas emissions, and more effective protection for the public.

Beijing is not the only city that has ever lost the blue sky. Five days of thick fog caused thousands of deaths in Britain in December 1952, urging the government to pass the first Clean Air Act in 1956, which introduced smokeless zones and cleaner fuels to reduce pollution. That may provide some experience for Beijing to refer to.

51. Why did Pan Shiyi start an online survey?

A. To investigate the public opinions on pollution.

B. To tell people the danger of the smoggy weather.

C. To seek people’s support for his re-election.

D. To collect supporting evidence for his proposal.

52. What can we learn from the passage?

A. People are clear about the causes of the smoggy weather.

B. Children staying indoors will not get respiratory illnesses.

武汉二中2013届高考模拟试题英语A卷第 9 页共 20 页

C. Smog is worse for people with lower resistance to diseases.

D. Masks can give people protection against the smoggy weather.

A. suggest Beijing should learn from other countries

B. let people know many places have this problem

C. tell people the situation in Britain is worse

D. call on the government to pass Britain’s Clean Air Act

I needed to get some money, so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham’s for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I’ll never forget.

I could never understand why there were many things in the sales; where did they come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock(货物)and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn’t sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds” (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.

When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd crowded in. I couldn’t believe my eyes: this wasn’t

武汉二中2013届高考模拟试题英语A卷第 10 页共 20 页

shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn’t keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.

Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colors and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl through people’s legs and get hold of things they couldn’t get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous queue gone? The whole day continued like that. I began to realize why, twice a year, Graham’s was happy to turn the expensive store into a battlefield like this.

In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain, it was OK. As soon as I got home, I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

54. What kind of clothes is likely to be sold 5% cheaper?

A. Last summer’s clothes.

B. Clothes not in perfect condition.

C. Clothes bought in specially for the sales.

D. Clothes for winter wear.

55. Which of the following statements is true?

A. The customers gave up the queuing, which the English are famous for.

B. The customers kept their temper while looking for clothes they wanted.

C. Small children enjoyed crawling through people’s legs.

D. The security guards were fearless of the crowd.

56. According to the author, why was Graham’s

happy to make the expensive store into a

“battlefield”?

A. There were too many clothes and they

wanted to clear them in the sales.

B. They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business.

C. They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes.

D. They wanted to make more money by having sales.

57. The underlined expression “crashed out ” means ______

A. slept soundly

B. chatted with friends

C. broke down

Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence — and a not-so-good influence — on this generation of American teenagers. More than 2,000 middle and high school teachers took an online survey. Researchers also spoke with teachers in focus groups.

Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” effect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 87 percent agreed that these technologies are cre ating an “easily distracted (分心的)generatio n”. And 64 percent said the technologies “do more to dis tract students than to help them academically. ” Many students think doing research now means just doing a quick search on Google.

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the College Board and the National Writing Project. A majority of the teachers came from Advanced Placement classes, which provide college-level work for high school students.

Judy Buchanan is director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report. Ms. Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more, and learn faster.

“Teachers really like these tools because they are ways to make some of the learning exciting and engaging. Young people like these tools. And the goal is to really help them become creators of content, and meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers. ”

But one problem the survey found is that many students are lacking in digital literacy. In other words, they trust too much of the information they find on the Internet. Judy Buchanan says these students have not developed the skills they need to judge the quality of online information.

“It’s just a lot to learn about how to distinguish authentic sources. And it’s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to. It’s like everything else —in a world in which things can happen quickly, you really do need to have a way to step back, reflect and analyze the information you have. And teachers can do a lot to

武汉二中2013届高考模拟试题英语A卷第 15 页共 20 页

teach that.”

Another problem the survey found is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online. Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research librarians.

Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

63. Most teachers who took the online survey thought the Internet tools help students in _______.

A. becoming more independent

B.

being more serious in study

C. doing a quick search on Google

D.

developing their research ability

64. According to Ms. Buchanan, the survey aims_______.

A. to help students become more creative

B. to draw students’ attention away from the

Internet

C. to make people learn the benefits of the

Internet tools

D. to persuade students to use traditional

ways of research

65. According to the researchers, which of the following do students lack when facing the Internet?

A. The ability of doing research online.

B. The interest in using the Internet tools.

C. The skills of judging online information.

D. The methods of obtaining online

information.

66.Which of the following is the disadvantage of the Internet tools?

A. Offering little useful information.

B. Search engines are not very convenient.

C. Making students unwilling to work hard.

D. Making students addicted to online

information.

E

It's not a new phenomenon, but have you

武汉二中2013届高考模拟试题英语A卷第 16 页共 20 页

noticed how many nouns are being used as verbs? We all use them, often without noticing what we're doing.

I was arranging to meet someone for dinner last week, and I said “I’ll pencil it in my diary”, and my friend said “You can ink it in”, meaning that it was a firm arrangement not a tentative one!

Many of these new verbs are linked to new technology. An obvious example is the word fax. We all got used to sending and receiving faxes, and then soon started talking about faxing something and promising we'd fax it immediately. Then along came email and we were soon all emailing each other madly. How did we live without it? I can hardly imagine life without my daily emails.

Email reminds me, of course, of my computer and its software, which has produced another couple of new verbs. On my computer I can bookmark those pages from the World Wide Web that I think I'll want to look at again, thus saving all the effort of remembering their addresses and calling them up from scratch. I can do the same thing on my PC, but there I don't bookmark; I favorite—coming from “favorite pages”, so the verb comes from an adjective not a noun.

Now my children bought me a mobile phone, known simply as a mobile and I had to learn yet more new verbs. I can message someone, that is, I can leave a message for them on their phone. Or I can text them, write a few words suggesting when and where to meet, for example. How long will it be before I can mobile them, that is, phone them using my mobile? I haven’t heard that verb yet, but I’m sure I will soon. Perhaps I’ ll start using it myself!

67. “I’ll pencil it in my diary” in the second paragraph probably means “____________”.

A. it was a firm arrangement

B. he prefers a pencil to a pen

C. the arrangement should be written as a diary

D. it was an uncertain arrangement 68. A website address can be easily found if it has been ____________.
