Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. (40 points)20 If you intend using humor in your talk to make people smile, you must know how to identify shared experiences and problems. Your humor must be relevant to the audience and should help to show them that you are one of them or that you understand their situation and are in sympathy with their point of view. Depending on whom you are addressing, the problems will be different. If you are talking to a group of managers, you may refer to the disorganized methods of their secretaries; alternatively if you are addressing secretaries, you may want to comment on their disorganized bosses. Here is an example, which I heard at a nurses' convention, of a story which works well because the audience all shared the same view of doctors. A man arrives in heaven and is being shown around by St. Peter. He sees wonderful accommodations, beautiful gardens, sunny weather, and so on. Everyone is very peaceful, polite and friendly until, waiting in a line for lunch, the new arrival is suddenly pushed aside by a man in a white coat, who rushes to the head of the line, grabs his food and stomps over to a table himself. "Who is that?" The new arrival asked St. Peter. "Oh, that's God," came the reply, "but sometimes he thinks he's a doctor. "If you are part of the group which you are addressing, you will be in a position to know the experiences and problems which are common to all of you and it'll be appropriate for you to make a passing remark about the inedible canteen food or the chairman's notorious bad taste in ties. With other audiences you mustn't attempt to cut in with humor as they will resent an outsider making disparaging remarks about their canteen or their chairman. You will be on safer ground if you stick to scapegoats like the Post Office or the telephone system. If you feel awkward being humorous, you must practice so that it becomes more natural. Include a few casual and apparently off-the-cuff remarks which you can deliver in a relaxed and unforced manner. Often it's the delivery which causes the audience to smile, so speak slowly and remember that a raised eyebrow or an unbelieving look may help to show that you are making a light-hearted remark.Look for the humor. It often comes from the unexpected. A twist on a familiar quote "If at first you don't succeed, give up" or a play on words or on a situation. Search for exaggeration and understatements. Look at your talk and pick out a few words or sentences which you can turn about and inject with humor.21 To make your humor work, you should______.(A)take advantage of different kinds of audience(B)make fun of the disorganized people(C)address different problems to different people(D)show sympathy for your listeners22 The joke about doctors implies that, in the eyes of nurses, they are______.(A)impolite to new arrivals(B)very conscious of their godlike role(C)entitled to some privileges(D)very busy even during lunch hours23 It can be inferred from the text that public service______.(A)have benefited many people(B)are the focus of public attention(C)are an inappropriate subject for humor(D)have often been the laughing stock24 To achieve the desired result, humorous stones should be delivered______.(A)in well-worded language(B)as awkwardly as possible(C)in exaggerated statements(D)as casually as possible25 The best title for the text may be______.(A)Use Humor Effectively(B)Various Kinds of Humor(C)Add Humor to Speech(D)Different Humor Strategies25 In a survey conducted by research firm Harris Interactive, 71% of Americans said that spending extra money on travel during the holiday season is worthwhile—so long as it affords them time with family and friends. But just because traveling may be the right thing to do, that doesn't mean it has to be the expensive thing to do. Traveling involves many hidden costs that, once you're aware of them, are easy to spot—and even easier to eliminate. To start, consider transportation fees. For example, if you're driving, fill up the gas tank before traveling on the highway, where it's much costlier, says Clarky Davis, a personal finance expert. And make sure your car is in good condition by checking yourheating vents, keeping up with routine maintenance and ensuring your tires are properly inflated, all of which help the car achieve favorable fuel economy. Furthermore, not only does a tow car(救援车)cause inconvenience; it also means extra costs. For those opting to fly, first, be aware of how much it costs to check a bag. Most airlines are charging for every checked bag by weight, but prices vary from carrier to carrier. If you can manage to pack everything into a carry-on, you'll save at least $ 15. Brooke Ferencsik, a travel expert, suggests considering secondary airports when booking your flight. These airports often are less crowded and frequently offer cheaper tickets. And when it comes to your actual destination, don't assume that hotels are going to cut back on fees simply because they're desperate to draw customers. "They won't be adding or increasing fees, but they won't be decreasing them either," says Ferencsik. The best defense against extra fees is to read about the hotel's rates online, before you make a reservation. "Be aware of surcharges for everything from housekeeping to grounds keeping to use of the in-room safe," says Ferenesik. Some hotels even install a sensor(传感器) within the mini bar, charging guests for simply touching the items, let alone eating or drinking them."From airlines to hotels to rental cars, they've all got hidden fees you need to be aware of," says Ferencsik. "Do your homework and ask questions. "26 It is found that 71% of Americans regard it as worthwhile to______.(A)spend money on souvenirs while traveling with family and friends(B)accept hidden costs while traveling with family and friends(C)travel with family and friends during the holiday season(D)travel with family and friends so as to please them27 How can fuel economy be improved?(A)By filling up the gas tank off the highway.(B)By avoiding the inconvenience of a tow car.(C)By considering transportation fees wisely.(D)By keeping your car in good condition.28 It is advised that everything be packed into a carry-on most probably because a carry-on______.(A)is usually free of charge(B)is more convenient than several checked bags(C)is subject to safety guarantee(D)is usually of a larger size than checked bags29 When looking for a hotel room, customers usually take it for granted that______. (A)extra fees are specified in the hotel's rates(B)hotels attract customers by reducing fees(C)online reservation provides the best rates(D)there is a surcharge for any in-room service30 The passage is providing advice to______.(A)spend money wisely(B)make traveling enjoyable(C)economize on holidays(D)avoid hidden cost on a trip30 The current emergency in Mexico City that has taken over our lives is nothing. I could ever have imagined for me or my children. We are living in an environmental crisis, an air-pollution emergency of severity. What it really means is that just to breathe here is to play a dangerous game with your health. As parents, what terrorizes us most are reports that children are at higher risk because they breathe more times per minute. What more can we do to protect them and ourselves? Our pediatrician's(儿科医师的) medical recommendation was simple- abandon the city permanently. We are foreigners and we are among the small minority that can afford to leave. We are here because of my husband's work. We are fascinated by Mexico—its history and rich culture. We know that for us, this is a temporary danger. However, we cannot stand for much longer the fear we feel for our boys. We cannot stop them from breathing. But for millions, there is no choice. Their lives, their jobs, their futures depend on being here. Thousands of Mexicans arrive each day in this city, desperate for economic opportunities. Thousands more are born here each day. Entire families work in the streets and practically live there. It is a familiar sight: as parents hawk goods at stoplights, their children play in the grassy highway dividers, breathing exhaust fumes. I feel guilty complaining about my personal situation; we won't be here long enough for our children to form the impression that skies are colored only gray. And yet the government cannot do what it must to end this problem. For any country, especially a developing Third World economy like Mexico's, the idea of barring from the capital city enough cars, closing enough factories and spending the necessary billions on public transportation is simply not an option. So when things get bad, as in the current emergency, Mexico takes half measures—prohibiting some more cars from circulating, stopping some factories from producing—that even its own officials concede aren't adequate. The word " emergency" implies the unusual. But when daily life itself is an emergency, the concept loses its meaning. It is human nature to try to adapt to that which we cannot change, or to mislead ourselves into believing we can adapt.31 According to the passage, people in Mexico City are faced with______.(A)serious air pollution(B)economic crisis(C)unemployment(D)natural disaster32 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?(A)Kids are in fewer dangers than grown-ups in Mexico City.(B)The author is a native Mexican.(C)The author's husband is a pediatrician.(D)The Mexican history and culture appeal to the author.33 The word "hawk" (Line 4, Para. 3) most probably means______.(A)sell(B)transport(C)place(D)deliver34 The Mexican government takes half measures to solve the pollution problem because______.(A)Mexican economy depends very much on cars and factories(B)it is not wise enough to come up with effective measures(C)Mexicans are able to adapt themselves to the current emergency(D)Mexicans enjoy playing dangerous games with their health35 The purpose of the passage is to______.(A)describe the harmful air pollution(B)explain the way to prevent air pollution(C)show the worries about the air pollution(D)recommend a method to avoid air pollution35 Earlier this year I met with a group of women in Matela, a small farming village in Tanzania, and we discussed something that's been on all of our minds lately: finding a safe place to save money. The women said their babies were getting sick from malaria (疟疾),and they could afford the drugs if they saved money over time—but with no access to formal savings accounts, they had a hard time safeguarding cash. So they saved in risky and inefficient ways. They made loans to each other, or bought goats or jewelry, then sold them if they suddenly needed money. The success of microloans has opened new opportunities for many poor people and has been a crucial factor in reducing poverty. But loans are not enough. Savings accounts could help people in the developing world with unexpected events, accumulate money to invest in education, increase their productivity and income, and build their financial security. Fortunately, this is a moment of opportunity. New policy ideas are uniting in ways that will lower the cost of savings and bring safe financial services to the doorsteps of the poor. One exciting trend is agent bank, in which stores and post offices serve as banking outlets. Banks still manage and guarantee the deposits, but they rely on the infrastructure (基础设施) of other outlets to deal with clients where there are no bank branches. The phenomenal growth of mobile phones in the developing world presents another opportunity. M-Pesa, the mobile-phone cash-transfer service in Kenya, has signed up more than 5 million subscribers in two years and recently expanded to Tanzania. This new idea is opening markets and transforming lives. A split-second M-Pesa transaction costs as little as 30 cents and replaces a day of risk and expense just to send someone money or carry earnings home.At the Gates Foundation, it has been committed more than $350 million to make financial services widely accessible to the poor because safe places to save can help break the cycle of poverty. If action is taken on this moment, then within a generation, billions of people will have the chance to build up their savings and live the healthy, productive lives that they deserve.36 According to the first paragraph, people in Matela are most likely to expect that (A)they can afford the cure for malaria(B)they can save their cash efficiently(C)they can live safely in the village(D)their can get rid of poverty soon37 What can help the poor build financial security?(A)Getting microloans.(B)Lower cost of savings.(C)Chances for education.(D)Savings services.38 What is the role of post offices in "agent banking"?(A)They are subordinate to banks.(B)They are cooperative with banks.(C)They are taking the place of banks.(D)They are being changed into banks.39 Compared with agent bank, M-Pesa most probably______. (A)is less practical for poor people(B)is more popular among clients(C)costs less except transaction fees(D)provides safer savings accounts40 Gates Foundation intends to make financial services______. (A)affordable(B)widely recognized(C)influential(D)easily obtained40 A. Main Results of Recent Researches.B. Popular Doubt about the New View.C. Effect of Environment on Intelligence.D. Intelligence and Achievement.E. Impact on School Education.F. A Changed View of Intelligence.G. Interaction between gene and environment.Intelligence was believed to be a fixed entity, some faculty of the mind that we all possess and which determines in some way the extent of our achievements. Its value, therefore, was as a predictor of children's future learning. If they differed markedly in their ability to learn complex tasks, then it was clearly necessary to educate them differently and the need for different types of school and even different ability groups within school was obvious. Intelligence tests could be used for streaming children according to ability at an early age. And at 11 these tests were superior to measures of attainment for selecting children for different types of secondary education.41. ______Today, we are beginning to think differently. In the last few years, research has thrown doubts on the view that innate intelligence can ever be measured and on the very nature of intelligence itself. There is considerable evidence now shows the great influence of environment both on achievement and intelligence. Children with poor home backgrounds not only do less well in their school work and intelligence tests but their performance tends to deteriorate gradually compared with that of their more fortunate classmates.42. ______There are evidences that support the view that we have to distinguish between genetic intelligence and observed intelligence(习得智力). Any deficiency in the appropriate genes will restrict development no matter how stimulating the environment. We cannot observe and measure innate intelligence, whereas we can observe and measure the effects of the interaction of whatever is inherited with whatever stimulation has been received from the environment. Researchers have been investigating what happens in this interaction.43. ______Two major findings have emerged from these researches. Firstly, the greatest part of the development of observed intelligence occurs in the earliest years of life. It is estimated that 50 percent of measurable intelligence at age 17 is already predictable by the age of four. Secondly, the most important factors in the environment are language and psychological aspects of the parent-child relationship. Much of the difference inmeasured intelligence between "privileged" and "disadvantaged" children may be due to the latter's lack of appropriate verbal stimulation and the poverty of their perceptual experiences.44. ______These research findings have led to a revision in our understanding of the nature of intelligence. Instead of it being some largely inherited fixed power of the mind, we now see it as a set of developed skills with which a person copes with any environment. These skills have to be learned and, indeed, one of them is learning how to learn.45. ______The modern ideas concerning the nature of intelligence are bound to have some effect on our school system. In one respect a change is already occurring. With the move toward comprehensive education and the development of unstreamed classes, fewer children will be given the label "low IQ" which must inevitably condemn a child in his own, if not society's eyes. The idea that we can teach children to be intelligent in the same way that we can teach them reading or arithmetic is accepted by more and more people.Part CDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. N. food agency says giving women farmers better access to land and other agricultural resources could help reduce the number of hungry people in the world by increasing farm output. In a report released Monday, the Food and Agriculture Organization said if women had the same tools and resources as men, they could raise agricultural production in developing countries by 2. 5 to 4 percent. The FAO said that increase in food production could reduce the number of undernourished people by as much as 17 percent. The FAO report said women make up 43 percent of the agricultural workforce in developing countries, but only 10 to 20 percent of the women own the land they farm and they find it more difficult to get credit to buy better seeds and fertilizers. 考研英语二(翻译)模拟试卷2(题后含答案及解析) 题型有:1.3 billion, which will create a huge market for this new industry.
Clever employers are now providing employees with task-specific apps。

Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. (40 points)20 A simple definition for a social network is the circles of people you know. There are circles of your close friends, others include your family, and yet others are of your acquaintances from church, your job, or community life. The Internet offers yet another opportunity for developing a social network with people who share something in common with you but whose paths you wouldn't have necessarily crossed because they reside in other states or countries.Social networking on the Internet took off in popularity several years ago. Now there are over 200 sites where you can make new friends, find a date, exchange photos or make new business connections. At MySpace you can create a private community to share photos and interests with your network of friends or family members. It's become very popular with the high school and college-aged set, but the number of older adults participating on MySpace is growing rapidly. Linkedln is a good example of a business networking site where your profile is more like a resume with a focus on work experience and skill sets such as engineering or marketing.Although many of these social networking sites allow you to add pictures and personal information to attract new friends, it's very important that you remember to stay safe on the Internet. Like any other public place, you need to be protective of your personal information when you're visiting sites on the Internet, and there are some bits of personal data that you should not share or have easily accessible on a social website. The obvious information not to publicly reveal is your actual address and phone number. In many cases you may not even want to provide your email address. It's not wise to fill in any form with your exact birthday, the true city where you were born or your mother's family name. There are all the types of information used by banks and credit card companies to verify your identify. A clever thief will troll social sites gathering this sort of information in order to steal an identity. So, be mindful when you join a social networking site that not everyone who contacts you is a trustworthy individual. If you're interested in giving social networking a try, browse a site you want to join as a "guest" for a while or ask some of your friends what sites they belong to. Fill out only the minimal profile information when you first join. You can always add more data later when you've become comfortable with the social interaction you have on that site. Also remember to remove information from your profile when you leave a site to which you don't intend to return.21 What is the passage mainly talking about?(A)Social networking provides a more convenient way to communicate with people online.(B)Human beings are spending more time talking online than in real life.(C)Social networking let people communicate with friends online perfectly.(D)People are trying to find a better and secure way to communicate through Internet.22 Via social networking, we can______.(A)find some useful information about our society(B)ask others to help us with our businesses(C)make friends, business connections or find appointments(D)get private information about others23 What's the major function of Linkedln?(A)It provides a platform to exchange fantastic photos and some rare information. (B)It supplies some personal information related with experience and craftsmanship. (C)It offers various ways to show yourself to your friends.(D)It gives students an opportunity to share common interests.24 What should you do to protect yourself on Internet?(A)change your personal information as much as possible.(B)not reveal any of your interests and photos.(C)conceal your real personal information.(D)not provide your personal address and phone number.25 "minimal profile information" in the last paragraph means______.(A)filling out as much information as possible(B)filling out as less information as possible(C)filling out some private information(D)filling out the information up to the lowest acceptable level25 Could the bad old days of economic decline be about to return? Since OPEC agreed to supply-cuts in March, the price of crude oil has jumped to almost $ 26 a barrel, up from less than $ 10 last December. This near-tripling of oil prices calls up scary memories of the 1973 oil shocks resulted in double-digit inflation and global economic decline. So where are the headlines warning of gloom and doom this time? The oil price was given another push up this week when Iraq suspended oil exports. Strengthening economic growth, at the same time as winter grips the northern hemisphere, could push the price higher still in the short term.Yet there are good reasons to expect the economic consequences now to be less severe than in the 1970s. In most countries the cost of crude oil now accounts for a smaller share of the price of petrol than it did in the 1970s. In Europe, taxes account for up to four-fifths of the retail price, so even quite big changes in the price of crude have a more muted effect on pump prices than in the past.Rich economies are also less dependent on oil than they were, and so less sensitive to swings in the oil price. Energy conservation, a shift to other fuels and a decline in the importance of heavy, energy-intensive industries have reduced oil consumption. Software, consultancy and mobile telephones use far less oil than steel or car production. For each dollar of GDP (in constant prices) rich economies now use nearly 50% less oil than in1973. The OECD estimates in its latest Economic Outlook that, if oil prices averaged $ 22 a barrel for a full year, compared with $13 in 1998, this would increase the oil import bill in rich economies by only 0. 25%~0. 5% of GDP. That is less than one-quarter of the income loss in 1974 or 1980. On the other hand, oil-importing emerging economies—to which heavy industry has shifted—have become more energy-intensive, and so could be more seriously squeezed. One more reason not to lose sleep over the rise in oil prices is that, unlike the rises in the 1970s, it has not occurred against the background of general commodity-price inflation and global excess demand. A sizable portion of the world is only just emerging from economic decline. The Economist's commodity price index is broadly unchanging from a year ago. In 1973 commodity prices jumped by 70%, and in 1979 by almost 30%.26 The main reason for the latest rise of oil price is______.(A)global inflation(B)reduction in supply(C)fast growth in economy(D)Iraq' s suspension of exports27 It can be inferred from the text that the retail price of petrol will go up dramatically if______.(A)price of crude rises(B)commodity prices rise(C)consumption rises(D)oil taxes rise28 The estimates in Economic Outlook show that in rich countries______.(A)heavy industry becomes more energy-intensive(B)income loss mainly results from fluctuating crude oil prices(C)manufacturing industry has been seriously squeezed(D)oil price changes have no significant impact on GDP29 We can draw a conclusion from the text that______.(A)oil-price shocks are less shocking now(B)inflation seems irrelevant to oil-price shocks(C)energy conservation can keep down the oil prices(D)the price rise of crude leads to the shrinking of heavy industry30 From the text we can see that the writer seems______.(A)optimistic(B)sensitive(C)gloomy(D)scared30 Investment in the public sector, such as electricity, irrigation, public services and transport (excluding vehicles, ships and planes) increased by about 10%, although the emphasis moved to the transport and away from the other sectors mentioned. Trade and services recorded a l6%~17% investment growth, including a 30% increase in investment in business premises. Industrial investment is estimated to have risen by 8%. Although the share of agriculture in total gross investment in the economy continued to decline, investment grew by 9% in absolute equipment. Housing construction had 12% more invested in it in 1964, not so much owing to increased demand, as to fears of new taxes and limitation of building.Total consumption in real terms rose by close on 11% during 1964, and per capita personal consumption by under 7%, as in 1963. The undesirable trend towards a rapid rise in consumption, evident in previous years, remained unaltered. Since at current prices consumption rose by 16% and disposable income by 13%, there was evidently afall in the rate of saving in the private sector of the economy. Once again consumption patterns indicated a swift advance in the standard of living. Expenditure on food declined in significance, although consumption of fruit increased. Spending on furniture and household equipment, health, education and recreation continued to increase. The greatest proof of altered living standards was the rapid expansion of expenditure on transport (including private cars) and personal services of all kinds, which occurred during 1964. The progressive wealth of large sectors of the public was demonstrated by the changing composition of durable goods purchased. Saturation (饱和) point was rapidly being approached for items such as the first household radio, gas cookers, and electric refrigerators, whereas increasing purchases of automobiles and television sets were registered.31 From this passage, we learn that people______.(A)spent more money than they earned(B)saved more money than previously(C)invested and consumed at an accelerated pace(D)spent their money wisely32 The author thinks that the trend towards a rapid rise in consumption was "undesirable" because______.(A)expenditure on luxuries increased(B)people were wealthy(C)people consumed less(D)people saved less33 Expenditure increased on all the following EXCEPT______.(A)food(B)automobiles(C)education(D)entertainment34 It can be inferred from the increase of fruit consumption that______.(A)people had to spend more on transportation and furniture(B)the price of fruit dropped dramatically(C)people were more money conscious(D)people were more healthy conscious35 The word "registered" in the last line most probably means______.(A)marked(B)approached(C)listed(D)booked35 How's this for unintended consequences? Some of the biggest beneficiaries(受惠者)of the women's movement have been married men. According to a new study by the Pew Research Center, married men have a 60% higher average household income than they did in 1970, even adjusted for inflation. Unmarried men, on the other hand, only got a 16% bump. One reason for the rise is that more men are marrying women who make more money than they do, mainly because there are more high-income women to go around. In 1970, just 4% of men at the age of 30 to 44 had wives who brought in more money than they did. By 2007, more than a fifth of men in that age range had wives who out-earned them. Members of this thriving demographic(人口统计学的)are effectively doubling their income or more when they wed, without doubling their costs.Aside from the increase in white-collar women, the other trend summed up by the Pew Research Center is that marriage rates have declined most sharply among the leasteducated men and women, which helps explain why the average household income figures for married men have pulled even further ahead of those for their single counterparts. More of the least rich are unmarried than before. The study, which drew on household income data from the Decennial Census and the 2007 American Community Survey, showed that the biggest gainers were married college-educated men. The biggest losers were unmarried men who did not complete high school or who only had a high school diploma. After adjusting for inflation, the 2007 unmarried low-income men and women had lower household incomes than their 1970 counterparts. "The steeper decline in marriage among the less educated has contributed to a steeper decline in their income," says one of the study's authors, D'Vera Cohn. The trend has a dark side, says Dalton Conley, social sciences dean at New York University. "High-income women marrying high-income men is one of the drivers of inequality," he says. "It affects the distribution of income between families. " He notes that among college-educated high-income couples, the divorce rate is getting lower, while unmarried low-income men and women tend to partner up and then uncouple more rapidly. "This leads to family instability and a cycle of disadvantage," says Conley.36 What do we know about the unmarried men, according to the last sentence of the first paragraph?(A)They got a 16% increase in household income.(B)They got a 16% decrease in household income.(C)Only 16 % of them were in financial difficulty.(D)Only 16% of them earned more than in 1970.37 "Members of this thriving demographic" are______.(A)men who marry at the age of 30 to 44(B)women whose husbands age 30 to 44(C)men whose wives earn more than they do(D)women who earn more than their husbands38 It is found by the Pew Research Center that more and more of the least educated men______.(A)earn less than their wives(B)are declined by white-collar women(C)refuse to marry white-collar women(D)have to remain single39 Compared with the 1970 unmarried low-income men, their 2007 counterparts (A)had even less education(B)had lower marriage rates(C)had slower growth in household income(D)had more trouble adjusting for inflation40 What does Conley imply by saying "This leads to family instability"?(A)Education determines the family stability.(B)Income determines the family stability.(C)Marriage rate is the index of family stability.(D)Divorce rate is the index of family stability.40 Until the late 1940s, when television began finding its way into American homes, companies relied mainly on print and radio to promote their products and services. The advent of television brought about a revolution in promoting products and services. Between 1949 and 1951, advertising on television grew 960 percent. Today the Internet is once again transforming promotion. By going online, companies can communicate instantly and directly with prospective customers. Promotion on the World Wide Webincludes advertising, sponsorships and sales promotions like contests and coupons. In 1996, World Wide Web advertising revenues reached $ 300 million.Effective online marketers do not merely transfer hard-copy ads to cyberspace. Successful sites blend promotional and non-promotional information, indirectly delivering the advertising messages. To encourage visitors to their sites and to create and cultivate customers' loyalty, companies change information frequently and provide many opportunities for interaction. One of the best online promotion web sites is the Ragu Web site. Here visitors can find thirty six pasta recipes, take Italian lessons, and view an Italian film festival. But they will find no traditional ads. So subtle is the mix of product and promotion that visitors hardly know an advertising message has been delivered. Sega of America, maker of computer games and hardware, uses its Web site for a variety of different promotions, such as introducing new game characters to the public and supplying Web surfers the opportunity to download games. Sega' s home page averages 250,000 visitors a day. To heighten interest in the site, Sega bought an advertising banner on Netscape, thereby increasing site visits by 15 percent. Online participants in Quaker Oats' Gatorade promotion received a free T-shirt in exchange for answering a few questions. Quaker Oats reports that the online promotion created product loyalty and helped the company know its customers better. Now, to target specific Internet users, an increasing number of companies are using "push" technology which automatically delivers customized news and other information to users' computers when they log onto the Internet. Although organizations like Nielsen Media Research are developing technologies to enhance audience measurement and tracking, it remains difficult to assess how many times the same person looks at an ad and who that person is. Although online promotions can be glamorous and sophisticated, they are not perfect. For a well-designed marketing mix, industry experts advise companies to use the Internet as a supplement to other advertising media.41 Internet, like television, has brought great changes to the promotion of products and services.42 In 1996, the Ragu Web site earned 2. 5 million dollars from advertisement.43 In order to encourage visitors, companies always use hard-copy advertisements.44 Netscape is an influential web site which is visited by millions of people.45 Nowadays, with advanced technology, advertisements can be sent to each Internet user directly.Part CDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Whichever it is, you know every twist and turn like the back of your hand. On these sorts of trips it’s easy to lose concentration on the driving and pay little attention to the passing scenery. The consequence is that you perceive thatthe trip has taken less time than it actually has. This is the well-travelled road effect: people tend to underestimate the time it takes to travel a familiar route. The effect is caused by the way we allocate our attention. When we travel down a well-known route, because we don’thave to concentrate much, time seems to flow more quickly. And afterwards, when we come to think back on it, we can’t remembe r the journey well because we didn’t pay muchattention to it. (1) (But this may have less to do with the luring call of academic surroundings than with changing market conditions–a factor that academic critics rarely take into account.) Robert Silverberg, a former president of The Science Fiction Writers of America, is one of the most prolific professionals in a field dominated by people who actually write for a living. (Unlike mystery or Western writers, most science-fiction writers cannot expect to cash in on fat movie sales or TV tie-ins.) (2) (Still in his late thirties, Silverberg has published more than a hundred books, and he is disarmingly frank about the relationship between the quality of genuine prose and the quality of available outlet. )By his own account, he was “an annoyingly verbal young man” from Brooklyn who picked up his first science-fiction book at the age of ten, started writing seriously at the age of thirteen, and at seventeen nearly gave up in despair over his inability to break into th e pulp magazines. (3)( At his parents’ urging, he enrolled in Columbia University, so that, if worst came to worst, he could always go to the School of Journalism and “get a nice steady job somewhere”.) During his sophomore year, he sold his first science-fiction story to a Scottish magazine named Nebula. By the end of his junior year, he had sold a novel and twenty more stories. (4) (By the end of his senior year, he was earning twohundred dollars a week writing science fiction, and his parents were recon ciled to his pursuit of the literary life. )“I became very cynical very quickly,” he says. First I couldn’t sell anything, then I could sell everything. The market played to my worst characteristics. An editor of a schlock magazine would call up to tell me he had a ten-thousand-word hole to fill in his next issue. I’d fill it overnight for a hundred and fifty dollars. I found that rewriting made no difference. (5)( I knew I could not possibly write the kinds of things I admired as a reader–Joyce, Kafka, Mann–so I detached myself from my work.) I was a phenomenon among my friends in college, a published, selling author. But they always asked, “When are you going to do something serious?” –meaning something that wasn’t science fiction–and I kept telling them, “ When I’m financially secure.”答案1.但是这一点与其说是与学术环境具有诱惑力的召唤有关,还不如说是与变化的市场状况有关––一这是一个学术评论家很少考虑的因素。

2022年考研英语的翻译模拟试题(二)二、科学与技术The meanings of scienceand technologyhave changed significantly from one generation to another. More similarities than differences, however, can be found between the terms, Both science and technology imply a thinking process, both are concerned with causal relationships in the material world, and both employ an experimental methodology that results in empirical demonstrations that can be verified by repetition. Science, at least in theory, is less concerned with the practicality of its results and more concerned with the development of general laws, but in practice science and technology are inextricably involved with each other. The varying interplay of the two can be observed in the historical development of such practitioners as chemists, engineers, physicists, astronomers, carpenters, potters, and many other specialists. Differing educational requirements, social status, vocabulary, methodology, and types of rewards, as well as institutional objectives and professional goals, contribute to such distinctions as can be made between the activities of scientists and technologists; but throughout history the practitioners of purescience have made many practical as well as theoreticalcontributions.Indeed, the concept that science provides the ideas for technological innovations and that pure research is therefore essential for any significant advancement in industrial civilization is essentially a myth. Most of the greatest changes in industrial civilization cannot be traced to the laboratory. Fundamental tools and processes in the fields of mechanics, chemistry, astronomy, metallurgy, and hydraulics were developed before the laws governing their functions were discovered. The steam engine, for example, was commonplace before the science of thermodynamics elucidated the physical principle underlying its operations. In recent years a sharp value distinction has their bitter opponents, but today many people have come to fear technology much more than science. For these people , science may be perceived as a serene, objective source for understanding the eternal laws of nature, whereas the practical manifestations of technology in the modern world now seem to them to be out of control. Many historians of science argue not only that technology is an essential condition of advanced, industrial civilization butalso that the rate of technological change has developed its own momentum in recent centuries. Innovations now seem to appear at a rate that increase geometrically, without respect to geographical limits or political systems. These innovations tend to transform traditional cultural systems, frequently with unexpected social consequences. Thus technology can be conceived as both a creative and a destructive process.答案46.科学与技术都包含有一种思维的过程,两者都涉及到物质世界的因果关系,两者都运用了一套试验的方法论,这种方法论所产生的是能够通过重复得以验证的阅历性的实证结果。

1 Some years ago I was offered a writing assignment that would require months of travel through Europe. How would I, unable to speak the language, totally unfamiliar with local geography, set up interviews and do research? So I sat down to write a letter begging off. Halfway through, a thought ran through my mind: you can't learn if you don't try. So I accepted the assignment. By the time I had finished the trip I was an experienced traveler. The point is that the new is almost by definition scary. But each time you try something, you learn, and as the learning piles up, the world opens to you. I've learned to ski at 40, and flown up the Rhine River in a balloon. And I'll go on doing such things. It is not because I am braver than others, but because I will accept anxiety as another name for challenge and I believe I can accomplish wonders.
2 The average person sends and receives more than 100 texts per day. Part of what's driving the texting surge is the popularity of social media. Sites like Twitter, with postings of no more than 140 characters, are creating and reinforcing the habit of communicating in micro-bursts. Economics has much to do with texting's popularity. Text messages cost carriers less than traditional mobile voice transmissions, and so they cost users less. Texting's rise over conversation is changing the way we interact. We are now inclined to text to relay difficult information. We avoid eye contact by staring at our phone. Texting saves us time, but it steals from quiet reflection. When people with a mobile device have even a little extra time, they'll communicate with someone in their life. But the phone conversation will never be completely out It comes into play when there are multiple options to consider or important decisions to be made.
3 If you're like most people, you may think you can keep away from advertising. You skip newspaper ads, never click on ads on the Internet and leave the room during TV commercials. But that is not necessarily true. Advertising works, which is why, even in hard economic times, Madison Avenue is a $34 billion-a-year business. And trying to tune this stuff out is about to get a whole lot harder. According to current studies, 83% of all forms of advertising principally engage only one of our senses: sight. Hearing, however, can be just as powerful, though advertisers 答案见麦多课文库
have taken only limited advantage of it. Historically, ads have relied on short tunes and slogans to catch our ear, largely ignoring everyday sounds—a soda being popped, a baby laughing and other noises our bodies can't help paying attention to. Weave this stuff into an ad campaign, and we may be powerless to resist it.
4 Over the years, I've studied working and stay-at-home moms. Fve met dozens of successful former lawyers and businesswomen in a range of profitable fields who lose their confidence after staying at home for a few years. They assume they can't return to their original fields, despite their successful track records. They erroneously think going into teaching, social work or nonprofit foundations will be easier. The reality is they'd be better off staying in their original field. Teaching and social work require years of education and certification. Due to naivety or arrogance, some former businesspeople don't realize high-level nonprofit posts are just as competitive and sought after as top business jobs. "The biggest issue facing many stay-at-homes was not whether their skills were rusty; rather, it was the confidence that they had lost while not working," explained a recent New York Times article. "You should never apologize for being out of the market."
5 How long you live has much to do with your environment and lifestyle such as not smoking, eating a healthy diet and remaining socially engaged etc. But living an exceptionally long life may have even more to do with your genes.. For the first time, researchers have identified a genetic recipe that accurately predicts who may live to 100 and beyond. It seems clear that those who live to an exceptionally ripe old age are benefiting from a special DNA boost Researchers believe that the older a person gets, the more likely it is that his or her genes are contributing to those extended years. They have found that the 19 most common genetic profiles that distinguished the exceptionally long-lived appear to be correlated with lower incidence of certain diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes and brain disorder. Researchers hope their work will lead to better ways to help more people live a longer life.
