PrefaceIt was the 9th of October when we were assigned to deliver a paper on Management and Organizational Behavior about Team Working by out instruction Ms. Koutsomitopoulou. Each team working on this paper consisted of three students, ours consisting of Ioannis Christaras, Vassilis Kostakos, and Panagiotis Fournarakis.Our team faced the an enormous problem on the veryfist day; we all lived too from each other: Ioannis in Koridallos, Panagiotis in Agia Paraskevi, and Vassilis in Glifada. And although we started off with many difficulties, we managed to get through the troublesome task of preparing a paper because we wanted it very much.Our first action, after exchanging phone numbers, in order to overcome the distance problem, was to agree to work with each other in Deree College, and if it was necessary to call each other at home. Afterwards, we hadto identify and assign all the necessary tasks which hadto be done. Ioannis was eager to prepare the introduction, so Vassilis and Panagiotis were assigned the main body of the paper.Having assigned the tasks among us, the next step wasto "get in action". We started conducting research, each one on our own. Our progress was checked and verified during meetings we held in the campus library. Any ideaswe had, or any action to be taken, was discussed in these meetings or during the numerous phone calls which took place. Although this "segmentation" of the project could turn out to be disastrous, we transformed it into a success as everyone pulled his share of the load and worked well with the others.Our group had developed one common objective, the best grade possible (an A!). This common objective assisted in overcoming all the difficulties and making us believe that no one would let the group down. And so it happened: We succeeded in working together and making this paper an integrated group product.Just before turning in the assignment, a last meeting was set to finalize our views and to agree on the "look" of the paper. By the time every last detail was dealt with, we just sat there admiring our paper. The most distinguishing characteristic of a team is that its members have, as their highest priority, the accomplishment of team goals. To them, the most important business at hand is the success of the group in reaching the goal that its members, collectively and with one voice, have set. The members support one another, collaborate freely, and communicate openly and clearly with one another.Teams and work groups pervade organizations. They are found in the executive suite, on the front line with customers and clients, and on the shop floor. They operate in organizations that provide services, that make products, and that create entertainment's. Virtually everyone who has worked in an organization has been a member in a task-performing group at one time or another.Why teamwork?One may wonder why should an organization create teams. In other words, what are the benefits of teamworkin an organization. The fact is that there are many benefits accompanied by teamwork, both for the organization and its employees. A first primary benefitis collaboration. People identify with their team, they want to work well together, and they want their team to shine and be successful.Another benefit of teamwork is communication. People who have learned to support and trust one another share what they know freely. Furthermore, teamwork assists in the efficient application of resources, mainly human, such as talents and strengths of individuals. Additionally, decisions and solutions are made simultaneously in teams, and everyone generates and evaluates more options that one person can develop.Yet another benefit is the commitment of team membersto carrying out their decisions and solutions, since they feel that they "own" them. Finally, team work assists in the improvements of quality. Team members are concerned with quality and accuracy, because they feel they are part of a team effort and want to make the team look as good as possible.Types of teams and groupsThere are many types of groups and teams that one may come across. These teams differ in the purpose of their creation, their way of working, their autonomy, and of course their efficiency. Listed below are the names of some of these teams along with a short description of their operation.Committees: They usually serve as investigative or advisory bodies reporting to the person or agency that has appointed and organized them.Task forces : Temporary problem-solving groups formed to deal with issues that cross over functions or lines of authority.Top management groups: A team consisting of top managers with the responsibility for setting organizational directions and for making the decisions that are of greatest consequence for the organization as a whole. Professional support teams: They serve their organizations indirectly by providing expert assistance to those who directly generate the organizations' products or services.Performing groups: These teams do not produce a service,a decision, or a product, but they produce aperformance- musical, theatrical, or athletic. Their clients are usually audiences, and weather done for money or not, the idea of play is key to the life and work of performing teams.Human service teams: Composed mainly of professionals (doctors, nurses) these teams do not process or deal with products but with people themselves. Their objective is to improve the physical and psychological well-being of their clients.Customer service teams: Their objective is to produce service of sufficient quality so that customers, whohave a choice of providers, will continue to do business with the team and its organization.Production teams: Such teams begin with a set of raw materials and use tools and technology to transform them into outputs. Members of such teams do not serve as the representatives of other groups, and are typically more involved with creating the product than they are with delivering it to end users.Group roles in effective groupsIf a team, of any kind or formation, is to function effectively, its members ought to consistently perform certain roles that contribute not only to reaching current objectives set by the team, but also to the ongoing improvement in the team's long-term operation.A first role performed by team members is supporting other members. This support goes beyond supporting someone when you agree with him. It means that support and encouragement is provided for a team member even if you don't agree with him: "I know that your idea or opinion is something you take seriously, and I accept that seriousness even tough I may not have the same view."There are times when a member's behavior is not helping the team succeed its goals. Such a behavior is to make fun of other, say unkind words, and so on. In these instances another team member may confront theundesirable behavior: "John, I don't think it's fair to suggest that Helen's opposition to your idea is based on her 'stubbornness,' as you describe it."Quite often, some members of a team are not comfortable with taking a stand and sharing their opinions. Consequently, most of their opinions get ignored or are not even expressed. When the "gate" seems closed to some team members, someone has to perform as a gatekeeper: "Hey, Bill has been trying to make a point for the past ten minutes, but he hasn't gotten more that two or three words in. I'd like for the rest of us to stop talking long enough to hear what he has to say."Sometimes disputes in a group can be so intense that those involved no longer listen or respond to each other. One member who is not involved in the debate intervenes in order to illuminate. This mediating person tries to interpret each side of the argument so that the arguers have a chance to revise or correct. This intervention ca clarify the real differences and provides a chance for others in the group to discuss the disputed points.During such heavy disagreements the disputants can become so involved that they fail to realize their agreement on certain points. Perhaps they simply use different terms. Someone must summarize the various views to show how close they actually are, thus harmonizing the discussion: "Jim, you and Eric seem todiffer on the time period, but you both seem to agree that it should be short term. Am I right?"A last role performed by group members is summarizing. Many times the group may find itself asking questions like "Where are we, what are we talking about?" At such moments the members are stuck, and someone must give them a push. This can be done if one member intervenes to sum up the discussion so far. This summarizing gives the group time to breathe, and a good summary clarifies some of the confusion. Furthermore, the summary may restore the group's confidence.•Chapter 2Team work is not perfectIntroductionWorking in teams brings benefits to both team members and organizations for which they work. But team work has also a sequence of disadvantages and threats which create conflict among team member. However, it should be mentioned that conflict is considered natural, and that team member assume that conflict, disagreement and promotion of disparate ideas are bound to occur in vibrant, successful groups. After all, when there is creativity, there is a chance of conflict. But is conflict always a wanted outcome of teamwork? Definitely no. Therefore The reasons which create it must be identified and explained in order to find effective ways to avoid it if we must.Reasons of conflictThe possible disadvantages of groups threaten the effectiveness of teamwork. Inappropriate conformity occurs when individual members go along with group decisions even if they have a serious disagreement upon the division. Examples from everyday life (in government, business, interpersonal relations) suggest that individuals which are part of a team act as their group wants because of a high social pressure to conform.Especially business group members often conform to managers' opinions in order to gain acceptance.Consequently, the groupthink phenomenon occurs when pressures for conformity are great. Groupthink is a state in groups where conformity is the dominant factorof the team. In such cases, members of a group are forced in a way to agree with the leader.Another very important cause of team conflict is the problem of social loafing, which is the tendency of individuals to exert less effort when working in a group than working individually. As group size increases individual efforts actually decline and as a result the effectiveness of the team declines also. The main reason which causes social loafing is that team members think the individual output a not identifiable and therefore this dispersion of responsibility will cause some to become "free riders".Finally, one of the most critical and crucial reasonsof group conflict is group composition. Groups which are heterogeneous and are composed of dissimilar members face conflict. Diversity among members of a group may be dueto different experiences, information, cultural background, values and beliefs. Diversified groups canbe detracted from their tasks, their effectiveness may decline, and may experience ambiguity, confusion and miscommunication. Another source of group diversification can be gender. Gender differences can have seriouseffect on group effectiveness. The most usual example is that of sexual harassment, usually caused by men, which can result in the decline of effectiveness of the female group member.Ways to avoid group conflictWhen group conflict occurs, it can be resolved mainly through openness. It must be dealt with in an analytical way through open discussion. In a team, members know that conflicts sharpen the differences, present additional view and ideas, and provide checks and balances for the group's process.Conflict resolution must be present oriented. A discussion of the conflict must be concentrated upon whatis happening in the group now. Prior disagreements, conversations that have taken place with others outside the group, and previous behaviors of team members in other situations are not part of the working through of the conflict. What matters is the here and now, not the past.Furthermore, conflict occurs over issues, not personalities. People may be part of the conflict, but they are not the issue. Therefore personalities shouldn't be involved, but the focus must be how to get over the team conflict. The driving motivation in team problem-solving must be a search for alternatives to improve the present situation.Finally, even if the conflict has occurred between some specific members of a team, the whole team must pitch in to help. Conflict is not an individual issue, it is a group issue. Therefore all the members of the team must work together toward the resolution of the conflict in order to keep the effectiveness of the team high.•ConclusionIn spite of many complex theories and formulas that exist, team work is actually a simple concept based on information sharing, collective decision making, and mutual trust, which bear many benefits for both the organization and its employees. This essay's purpose was to shed some light on the different types of teams and groups that prevail in our days. Furthermore, there was an insight to some of the basic roles that are performed in effective team work environments. Additionaly, some negative aspects of teamwork were discussed.Team work is not a new concept or a startling breakthrough; it has been practiced for many years in one form or another. Maybe it began with the farm family sitting around the kitchen table to make some decisions about planting. Perhaps it was the supervisor and the two employees who stood puzzling over a machine that just didn't seem to work right. Collective knowledge and resources bring a better decision, one that is more realistic with fewer errors in logic, and one that has greater support for implementation.Each organization must consider team work in terms of its own goals, values, and culture. Yet team work is more than this. It is "the collective idea power produced by employees taking responsibility for quality and productivity, managing their work, and developing their skills and knowledge about the organization and about themselves."
