We saw scattered herds of bison grazing on the fields, their huge shaggy heads bent down nipping at the grass. We even spotted a grizzly bear lumbering along in the distance! Thehighlight was definitely watching Old Faithful erupt, sending a tower of steaming hot water shooting up over 100 feet into the air. It was amazing to see that natural phenomenon in person.From Yellowstone we traveled north into Montana to visit Glacier National Park. I'd never seen anything like the rugged, jagged peaks and shimmering aquamarine lakes there. We took a boat tour across one of the lakes which allowed us to view the stunning scenery up close. We even docked and went for a little hike, walking along a trail while keeping an eye out for bears, mountain goats, and other wildlife. Luckily we only saw some deer and a few curious squirrels on that trek!Our last park to visit was the black hills of South Dakota to view the giant carvings of four former U.S. presidents at Mount Rushmore. It was incredible to think that each of those massive faces was slowly and painstakingly carved into the mountainside by determined sculptors. The sheer size and detail of the memorial was breathtaking. We took the scenic trail walk along the base, allowing us to really appreciate the grand scale of this iconic monument.In between all the national park destinations, our road trip also took us through lots of interesting small towns and big cities across the heartland of America. We stopped at classic roadsidediners, gift shops, museums, and all kinds of quirky roadside attractions along the way. My personal favorite was the World's Largest Truck Stop in Iowa, which had an entire store filled with wacky truck-themed merchandise and a giant statue of an extraterrestrial truck driver outside! We also hit several quintessential Americana spots like the St. Louis Arch and the Las Vegas strip. Everywhere we went there were new sights, sounds, people and experiences unlike anything from back home.After nearly a month of traveling and adventure, we finally made it back to our quiet little town filled with incredible memories to last篇6My Summer AdventureThe final bell rang, signaling the end of classes and the start of summer vacation. I couldn't wait to get home, drop my backpack, and head outside to enjoy the warm sunshine and freedom from schoolwork.
