A Scotsman and an Englishman lived next door to each other. The Scotsman owned a hen and each morning he would look in his garden and pick up his hen’s egg for breakfast. One morning he looked into his garden and saw that the hen had laid an egg in the Englishman’s garden.

He was about to go next door when he saw the English-man pick up the egg. The

Scotsman ran up to the English-man and told him that the egg belonged to him because he owned the hen. The Englishman disagreed because the egg was on his property(财产).

They argued for a while until finally the Scotsman said, "In my family we normally settle disputes by the following actions: We kick each other and we compare the time how long it takes us to get back up. Whoever gets up quicker wins the egg."

The Englishman agreed to this, so the Scotsman found his heaviest pair of boots and put them on. He took a few steps back, then ran toward the Englishman and kicked as hard as he could in his stomach.

The Englishman fell to the floor, holding his stomach and howling in pain for 10 minutes. Eventually the English-man stood up and said, "Now it’s my turn to kick you." At this time, the Scotsman said, "Aye Lad, maybe you should just keep the egg."

The Onion was started by two university students in 1988. They said their paper was "America’s finest news source". For the first few years it enjoyed local popularity. Then in 1996 the weekly Onion entered cyberspace(网络). The new humorous online magazine became very popular. The web site said The Onion had three million readers every week. The popularity of the online magazine led to increased interest in the print version. The Onion print magazine said it had almost one million readers each week.

The Onion covers all kinds of subjects and uses a kind of humor called satire(讽刺). They use serious, journalistic language and style to make fun of people’s ideas and activities.

For example, once an Onion online cover showed a picture of a dissatisfied young man in his disorganized home. The headline read, "Plan to straighten out entire life during week-long vacation yields(产生)mixed results." The report that followed was written in newspaper style, but, of course, this man’s problems were not really worthy of newspaper coverage!

The Onion includes features found in a real newspaper. For example, there is a section called American Voices. It includes photographs of several people who have been stopped on the street. They provide their opinions on whatever subject they are

asked about. They are very funny, but what is funnier is that The Onion uses the same photographs every week, but changes the names. So, readers realize quickly that the joke is on them.

Onion Editor-in-Chief Scott Dikkers has published several books of collected Onion reports. The most recent is called Embedded in America. Not everyone likes The Onion. Some people find it offensive(攻击性的). Others do not recognize it as a humor magazine and sometimes Onion stories are reported by real news organizations as real news reports.

59. According to the passage The Onion_______.

A. that The Onion is offensive

B. what American men’s problems are

C. how The Onion uses a style of news report to make fun of people’s ideas

D. how the cover has a great effect on The Onion

62. What would be the best title for this passage?

Serving others after disasters is important to Alison VanBuskirk —important enough for the recent college graduate to devote her next year to doing just that.

Now serving to help with communications at the New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS), VanBuskirk said volunteering throughout college inspired her to look for this kind of position. She spent two spring breaks on service trips to New Orleans

to assist with hurricane recovery.

In New Orleans for her 2006 and 2007 spring breaks, VanBuskirk spent a lot of time helping residents (居民). She worked on homes in the Ninth Ward and outside the city, focusing on assisting elderly, low-income and disabled residents.

She said she enjoyed the experience and always encouraged other people to do similar trips.

"It’s especially impo rtant now because a lot of these people feel forgotten," she said. "They appreciated us coming down and they appreciated all who came down. Just knowing people from around the U.S. have not forgotten them is helpful both emotionally and psychologically."

VanBuskirk said she had an urge to work in some type of year-long service position after she graduated in June, but was not sure where until she saw the NYDIS announcement.

"This program stuck out to me," she said. "What’s important is that they can connect with both the Red Cross and the government. They can help to improve cooperation, which means they have more resources and can respond faster to disasters.

VanBuskirk said she hoped to increase her service skills through her work with NYDIS. She said she also hoped to do another volunteer trip next year. She said, "I got as much out of these trips as I think our group gave. It was just a really rewarding experience to interact (互动) with really great people. They shared their stories and their lives with us. It was a great opportunity."

A. VanBuskirk wanted to work as a volunteer after graduation

B. VanBuskirk hoped to offer help to hurricane victims

A. Volunteering can benefit both volunteers and disaster victims.

B. Volunteering can help increase one’s service skills.

C. Volunteering can make disaster victims feel like they are remembered.

D. Volunteering throughout college helped VanBuskirk find an ideal job for her.

3. Why did VanBuskirk choose NYDIS to work for after graduation?

A. NYDIS was the only organization to offer volunteering work.

B. NYDIS could connect with both the government and the Red Cross and help people

faster.

C. Only NYDIS offers service skill training to new comers.

D. NYDIS offers volunteer trips every year.

4. From the last paragraph, we can infer that __________.

A. people can learn a lot from their volunteer work

B. volunteer trips can help one meet many great people

C. you can read many volunteer stories as a volunteer

D. volunteering can offer one more chances to travel

5. From the passage we know that VanBuskirk is a person _______________.

Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City, Kahlo suffered from polio(小儿麻痹症)at the age of seven. Her spine(脊柱)become bent as she grew older. Then, in 1925, her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident.Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Kahlo taught herself to paint. In 1929, she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist.Rivera's strong influences on Kahlo's style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband. Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s, even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953.For more than a decade after her death in 1954, Kahlo's works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last. 21.What does the phrase "a much bigger name" in paragraph 1 most nearly mean?

A MASTER OF NONVERBAL HUMOUR As Victor Hugo once said, "Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face", and up to now nobody has been able to do this better than Charlie Chaplin. He brightened the lives of Americans and British through two world wars and the hard years in between. He made people laugh at a time when they felt depressed, so they could feel more content with their lives. Not that Charlie's own life was easy! He was born in a poor family in 1889. His parents were both poor music hall performers. You may find it astonishing that Charlie was taught to sing as soon as he could speak and dance as soon as he could walk. Such training was common in acting families at this time, especially when the family income was often uncertain. Unfortunately his father died, leaving the family even worse off, so Charlie spent his childhood looking after his sick mother and his brother. By his teens, Charlie had, through his humour, become one of the most popular child actors in England. He could mime and act the fool doing ordinary everyday tasks. No one was ever bored watching him -his subtle
