My children and I are riding on a 18-foot boat—small enough that we can reach down into the water if a gray whale swims up alongside. And then we see what we’ve come for: a heart-shaped shower of water and a dark mass rushing below it. As instructed, we splash (溅泼) the water strongly to signal the huge whale, which turns out to be a mother with her weeks-old baby. The baby soon swims beneath our boat, emerges to blow mist in my face, then “lies onto its side like a 2-ton puppy.” Leaning down, I touched its skin gently. “It feels electric. Also, a bit like petting a hard-boiled egg.”San Ignacio is one of very few places where a person can pet a whale. The whales come each year to the coast of Baja California to give birth and to mate. If you’re lucky, you can “shake hands with a leathery fin (鳍)” or even “plant a kiss on a cold, salty cheek.” I usually worry about such interactions, because wild creatures can become deeply stressed by human contact. But boat numbers are strictly limited in these protected waters. And any whale that approaches a boat does so on its own terms. Like that baby whale: “We see him a few times, and he seems to like being petted and splashed.”So we are two species, connecting through touch, but also through eye contact: “Morethan once, after nosing around our boat, a young gray turns on its side so one dark, baseball-size eye is looking up at us.” Whalers used to call gray whales“devil fish”because these magnificent creatures tu rn violent when threatened—“or, say, when their babies are harmed.” That makes it feel even more of a blessing when, on our third day there, a large mama whale approaches the boat. “I’m splashing when I feel her nose press up into my hand.” Though she’s “wiser and apparently more alert” than her child, “she still decides to trust us.”4.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.The writer was on a whale-touching trip.B.The writer’s boat went down with a huge wave.C.The baby whale splashed water all over the writer.D.The mother whale’s skin felt as hard as a boiled egg.5.By “does so on its own terms” (in paragraph 2), the writer means whales in San Ignacio are ______.A.mad with too many visitors B.ready for hands-on attentionC.restricted in swimming routes D.enclosed in their safety zones6.Gray whales got the name of “devil fish” from their ______.A.strange appearance B.inborn violenceC.surprisingly enormous size D.fierceness in danger7.The writer’s implied purpose in the passage is to ______.A.popularize the knowledge of whales B.show admiration for whales’ motherhood C.share an experience of the sea voyage D.advocate harmony between man and natureThe Greek historian Herodotus reported over 2,000 years ago on a misguided experiment in which two children were prevented from hearing human speech so that a king could discover the true, unlearned language of human beings.Scientists now know that human language requires social learning and interaction with other people, a property shared with multiple animal languages. But why should humans and other animals need to learn a language instead of being born with this knowledge?Given that the ways honeybees communicate are quite complex, we decided to study how they learn to communicate to answer this language question.Bees possess one of the most complicated examples of nonhuman communication. They can tell each other where to find resources such as food, water, or nest sites with a physical “waggle (摇摆) dance”, by circling around in a figure eight pattern centered around a waggle run. This dance conveys the direction, distance and quality of a resource to the bee’s nestmates.Bees begin to dance only as they get older. Could they be learning from practiced teachers? We thus created isolated experimental colonies of bees (蜂群) that could not observe other waggle dances before they themselves danced. Like the ancient experiment described by Herodotus, these bees could not observe the dance language because they were all the same age and had no older, experienced bees to follow. In contrast, our control colonies contained bees of all ages, so younger bees could follow the older, experienced dancers. We recorded the first dances of the bees. The bees that could not follow the dances of experienced bees produced dances with significantly more directional, distance and disorder crrors than the dances of control bees.We then tested the same bees later, when they were experienced dancers. Bees who had lacked teachers now produced significantly fewer errors, possibly because they had more practice or had learned by eventually following other dancers. The dances of the control bees remained just as good as their first dances.Complex communication is often difficult to produce even when individuals are born with some knowledge of the correct signals. Bees are born with some knowledge of how to dance, but they have to learn how to dance even better by following experienced bees. 8.Why does the author say the experiment on the two children is a misguided experiment?A.Language learning is a social activity.B.Language learning has changed greatly.C.Children are born with human speech.D.Children develop differently in language. 9.What does the underlined word “isolated” in paragraph 6 indicate?A.Old bees could not produce waggle dances.B.Old bees could not observe waggle dances.C.Young bees were separated from older ones.D.Young bees could followexperienced bees.10.What do we know about the bees whose dances remained as good as their first dances?A.They had little practice in waggle dances.B.They had learned waggle dances without teachers.C.They were experienced in teaching waggle dances.D.They had learned waggle dances before their first dances.11.What does the last paragraph serve as?A.A guide to complex communication.B.An answer to why language should be learned.C.An example of nonhuman communication.D.A proof that bees are born with some knowledge.A new service gives new life to the past by using artificial intelligence to change still images into moving videos.Called Deep Nostalgia, the service creates animations (动画) by using deep learning to analyze a single facial photo. Then, the system animates the facial image through a “driver" — a pre-determined sequence (次序) of movements and gestures. The process is completely automated.Launched by the Israeli genealogy company My Heritage, some of Deep Nostalgia's early results are impressive. But that's not to say the animations are perfect. There's still an uncanny air to the images, with some of the facial movements appearing slightly unnatural. What's more, Deep Nostalgia is only able to create deepfakes of one person's face from the neck up, so you couldn't use it to animate group photos, or photos of people doing any sort of physical activity. But for a free deep-fake service, Deep Nostalgia is pretty impressive, especially considering you can use it to create deepfakes of any face, human or not. So, is creating deepfakes of long-dead people a bit frightening? Some people seem to think so. “Some people love the feature with Deep Nostalgia and consider it magical while others think it is scary and dislike it, ”My Heritage wrote on its website. “We invite you to create movies using this feature and share them on social media to see what your friends and relatives think. This feature is intended for nostalgic (怀旧的) use, that is, to give life back to beloved ancestors.”Deep Nostalgia isn't the first project to create deepfakes from single images. In 2019, researchers working at the Samsung AI Center in Moscow published a paper describing how machine-learning techniques can produce deepfakes after “looking" at only one or a few images. While the results from the Samsung researchers were impressive, the Deep Nostalgia project shows how deepfake technology is advancing at a rapid pace. As these tools have become increasingly popular, media experts have raised concerns about how bad actors might use deepfakes and “cheap fakes” to trick the public. My Heritage seemed to sense Deep Nostalgia's potential or abuse, writing: “Please use this feature on your own historical photos and not on photos of living people without their agreement.”12.What can we infer from the passage?A.Deep Nostalgia enhances the images to make the animations perfectly natural.B.Deep Nostalgia is able to create deepfakes of people's physical activity.C.People hold different opinions about Deep Nostalgia.D.The Samsung Al Center in Moscow produced deepfakes after Deep Nostalgia. 13.Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined word in Paragraph 3?A.Strange.B.Artificial.C.Perfect.D.Impressive.14.What attitude does My Heritage hold towards the future use of deepfakes?A.Optimistic.B.Alarmed.C.Ambiguous.D.Pessimistic.15.What could be the best title for the passage?A.Deepfake technology raises concern among experts.B.Deepfake technology advances at a fast pace.C.Deep Nostalgia brings old photos to life.D.Deep Nostalgia goes viral on social media.二、七选五Joseph Conrad, a famous English novelist, said that his goal as a writer was “to make you hear, to make you feel, and above all, to make you see. That, and no more, is everything.”finishing the story, the reader should have something to think about: the humor of life, its ironies, or the unpredictability of human behavior.17 The first and most obvious level is conveyed through the plot. Plot refers to the sequence of events, to the actions of the characters and the situations in which they are involved. To explain the plot, then, is to tell what happened in the story and to whom. In some short stories, plot is the dominating element. In other short stories, plot plays a very minor role.In Hemingway’s story, The Old Man and the Sea, however, we must approach the content on another level. 18 To understand and appreciate the story, the reader must be able to identify its general topic or theme. The next step is to identify the device by which the author comments on this theme. 19Readers cannot appreciate a short story fully unless they react not only to what has been said but also to how it has been said. 20 Style grows out of the writer’s own personality and can be seen in the choice of words and phrases, the arrangement of sentences, the rhythm and tone. Structure refers to the architecture of the story, the way in which the details are selected and arranged to produce the desired effect.A.They must look for style and structure.B.In complex stories, careful readers may not always agree with the author.C.The impact on the reader comes from the sudden and unexpected response.D.A good short story tries to give the reader a sense of the actual experience.E.Finally, the reader should be able to explain the insights which the author has given into the theme.F.The impact of the story comes from the insight it gives us into the needs and desires of youth and old age.G.In order to read a short story with full understanding, the reader must approach the content on two levels.三、完形填空People on a college campus were more likely to give money to the March of Dimes if they were asked for a donation by a disabled woman in a wheelchair than if asked by astick stumble and fall to the floor. Sometimes the victim had a large red birthmark on hislike for some reason and people we think 26 assistance. In some situations, those who are physically attractive are more likely to receive aid.27 , in a field study researchers placed a completed application to graduate school in a telephone box at the airport. The application was ready to be 28 , but had apparently been “lost”. The photo attached to the application was sometimes that of a very 29 person and sometimes that of a less attractive person. The measure of helping was whether the individual who found the envelope actually mailed it or not. Results showed that people were more likely to 30 the application if the person in the photo was physically attractive. The degree of 31 between the potential helper and the person in need is also important. For example, people are more likely to help a stranger who is from the same country rather than a foreigner. In one study, shoppers on a busy street in Scotland were more likely to help a person wearing a (n) 32 T-shirt than a person wearing a T-shirt printed with offensive words.Whether a person receives help depends in part on the “worth” of the case. For example, shoppers in a supermarket were more likely to give someone 33 to buy milk rather than to buy cookies, probably because milk is thought more essential for 34 than cookies. Passengers on a New York subway were more likely to help a man who fell to the ground if he appeared to be 35 rather than drunk.21.A.way B.study C.word D.college 22.A.face B.arm C.hand D.back 23.A.refuse B.beg C.receive D.lose 24.A.challenging B.recording C.publishing D.understanding 25.A.important B.possible C.amusing D.missing 26.A.seek B.obtain C.deserve D.accept 27.A.At first B.For example C.In addition D.Above all 28.A.mailed B.printed C.rewritten D.signed 29.A.talented B.hard-working C.helpful D.good-looking30.A.throw away B.send in C.fill out D.turn down 31.A.cooperation B.friendship C.similarity D.contact 32.A.plain B.expensive C.cheap D.strange 33.A.money B.instructions C.time D.chances 34.A.shoppers B.health C.children D.research 35.A.talkative B.handsome C.sick D.calm四、用单词的适当形式完成短文阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

I feel it the most strongly when I’m worried about my health or my daughter’s health. I feel an unusual sensation and all of a sudden: panic! My worries are not limited to health concerns though, and they go in the direction of anxiety about the future of the world, worries about my finances, and fears that I’m not good enough.Let me go back a few decades, back to when anxiety wasn’t part of my life. When I was a child, I loved art. I drew and I colored because that’s what I enjoyed. I went to college to become an art teacher. When I finished school in May of 2001, I had a part-time design job, and after the event of September 11th, 2001, I knew I needed to travel, to get out of the safe life I was living in my hometown. That’s when my creative practices fell by the wayside.Luckily, after the birth of my daughter in 2014, the desire to create came back. At first, Iwas using a tiny corner of a bedroom in our rental house to paint. Eventually we bought a house, and I had the space to spread out, ready to paint whenever the urge struck. That’s when I started noticing something important: Painting stilled me in a way that nothing else did. It eased my fears and anxieties in a way other practice (deep breathing, etc) did not, at least not as consistently. When anxious thoughts start, I know what to do. I head into my studio, grab some materials, and start creating. Soon enough, the worries are gone and instead my mind is quiet.I think the reason why painting is so helpful for my anxiety is that, in order for me to be anxious, I have to be worrying about the future and what it holds. When I’m doing an activity that requires my full concentration, I have to be in the moment. It doesn’t matter if you’re artistic. The only thing that matters is finding a way to be here, in the now, instead of in the unknowable future. 4.Which word can best describe the writer in paragraph 1?A.Cautious.B.Insecure.C.Considerate.D.Impatient. 5.When did the writer give up on art temporarily?A.After her daughter was born.B.When she studied in college.C.When she was still a little child.D.After some big event happened.6.How does painting relieve the writer’s anxiety?A.Painting makes her stay in a place.B.Colors of painting calm her down.C.Painting is a very creative activity.D.Painting makes less room for worries. 7.What can we learn from the story?A.What is important is to seize the moment.B.Anxiety may sometimes be beneficial to life.C.It is necessary to learn some art in childhood.D.Painting is the best way to ease people’s mind.Imagine you’ re out for an evening walk in a foreign city, looking to find a restaurant for dinner. If you’ re like most people, you will look for the busiest restaurant with the most diners because its popularity is bound to reflect on the quality of food and service. But is this true?In tourist areas, early diners have no meaningful clues as to which restaurant to choose, so they may have picked their evening eatery on a whim (一时兴起). Following passers-by may have misinterpreted their restaurant choice as a well-informed decision and blindly followed their example. This could have resulted in a snow-balling effect, whereby ever-increasing numbers ofcustomers were attracted to the restaurant in question, creating a false impression of approval. Therefore, following the example of others could have led to a suboptimal(次优的) dinner choice in an overcrowded restaurant.Blindly copying other people’s thoughts or choices or simply going with the crowd is often referred to as “herd behavior(从众行为).” It is a frequent occurrence among humans as well as many other animals.Herding can appear to make a lot of sense. Average judgments of large groups of people often outperform individual choices. Furthermore, following the crowd appears to offer protection and comfort—— after all, there’s “ safety in numbers”--while helping to maintain a favorable fame. Finally, following the herd reduces the effort needed to make a personal or unique decision; it is therefore an easy option.Herd behaviors, while common and easy to explain, hold significant dangers. Contrary to the so-called “wisdom of crowds”, which emerges when the judgments of individual group members are independently collected to produce an average opinion, herd behaviors typically rely on so-called “information cascades”, where people take on others’ beliefs or copy their choices without critically evaluating the underlying reasons. As a result, herding can have many undesirable outcomes, including negative influences on consumer choices, like in the restaurant example above.8.What likely causes a restaurant’s popularity in tourist areas according to Para.2?A.Early diners choose it based on its high quality and reputation.B.Passers-by may assume that the early diners made an informed choice.C.The restaurant is recommended by locals familiar with the area.D.The restaurant is advertised as having high-quality food and service.9.What is one reason why people tend to follow the crowd?A.It leads to average judgments.B.It brings a sense of security.C.It challenges a favorable reputation.D.It allows for better decision-making.10.What does the underlined “ information cascades” mean in Para.5?A.Adopting others’ beliefs or choices without evaluation.B.Critical evaluation of underlying reasons for choices.C.Average judgments formed by large groups of people.D.Independent collection of individual opinions and judgments.11.What is the author’s attitude towards “herd behavior”?A.Neutral B.Favorable C.Critical D.IndifferentWant to know what is coming soon to a cinema near you? Probably not a 1.5-hour-long movie, as in the old days. On October 20th comes Killers of the Flower Moon. At nearly three and a half hours, its length is nearly double that of the average film last year. Even movie fans struggle to concentrate for that long and some viewers even nod off. Afterwards there is a mad dash for the toilets. When does watching a film become such a slog? The Economist analyzed over 100,000 feature films released internationally since the 1930s, the start of Hollywood’s golden age, using data from IMDb, a movie database. The average length of productions rose by around 24%, from one hour and 21 minutes in the 1930s to one hour and 47 minutes in 2022. For the ten most-popular titles, the average length grew to around two and a half hours in 2022, nearly 50% higher than in the 1930s.One driver of this trend is that studios want to squeeze the most out of their costly intellectual property (知识产权), but they are competing with streaming platforms for eyeballs. The hope is that a spectacular, drawn-out “event” movie will draw audiences away from the small screen and into cinemas. This approach has often paid off: Avengers: Endgame Marvel’s three-hour superhero masterpieces, was the highest-grossing (票房最高的) film in 2019. Last year long movies series made up most of the highest-grossing films in America.Another explanation for longer films has to do with directors’ growing influence. Who would dare tell the likes of Mr. Nolan to cut out his masterpieces? Moreover, streaming platforms, which do not have to worry as much about the length because viewers can pause whenever they like, may attract big names by promising them sufficient fund and creative freedom. Netflix funded and released three-hour The Irishman in 2019, a film that would have benefited from a decisive editor, Irish or otherwise.12.The underlined part “a slog” in paragraph 1 refers to a(n)___.A.pleasure B.effort C.conflict D.feast13.What can be inferred from paragraph 2?A.The average length affects the popularity of films.B.Great advances have been made in film industry.C.Hollywood starts a golden age of feature films.D.The average duration of movies has stretched.14.What sets the trend of longer movies?A.Competition for the target audience.B.Thirst for more classic productions.C.Influence of streaming platforms.D.Preference for decisive editors.15.What is probably the best title for the passage?A.Movie Enthusiasts B.Movie MarathonsC.Movie Production D.Movie InfluenceTennis is a particularly rewarding sport. 16 Perhaps the most obvious benefits tennis offers are the physical ones. However, it is also an incredibly mental sport. If there is one key aspect of the mental side of tennis, it’s that tennis is a game of problem solving. It is very easy to self-destruct(自我毁灭) when playing tennis if you let your expectations and ego get the better of you. So, simply playing the ball that is in front of you is the simplest way to approach the game, along with taking each point at a time. That being said, it is much easier said than done. 17 Even if it is as simple as playing to your opponent’s backhand as much as possible, or aiming to hit as many cross court(对角线球) balls as you can, it is important to have a plan of attack if you want to be successful on the court.18 You may have the best plan in the world, but if you aren’t performing well enough to execute it or your opponent cottons on(领悟) what you’ re trying to do, you’ll need to adapt, improvise(临时做) and overcome. Adapting to new conditions, court surfaces, balls and playing styles is all part of becoming a better tennis player!19 This means you need to be incredibly tough to play good tennis and overcome hardship. Don’t be too much bothered by some points you lose. Just learn from your mistakes but not let them get you down.Tennis is also about playing the big points well and understanding that not all points hold thesame weight across the course of a match. Putting disappointment behind you and trying to play the next point with a positive attitude can be very difficult to do. 20A.However, being flexible is also important.B.You will always have to have some form of strategy.C.However, it is a key part of becoming a better tennis player.D.It can bring with it a whole host of physical and mental benefits.E.Every backhand shot you hit is what you throw at your opponent.F.Mastering the game of tennis takes a lot of mental and physical dedication.G.The scoring system in tennis means you can win more points and still lose a match!二、完形填空When light snow began falling, the principal kept a careful eye on the approaching storm. But there are some people who do it all the time. They grow some vegetables because their natural color or shape is pleasing to see. They grow others because scientists have developed new colors or different sizes for traditional vegetables. One example is the bell pepper. Seed companies sell seeds for several different kinds of bell peppers. One pepper is a weak yellow color when it begins to grow. Then its color changes to white. As it grows, it changes color two more times -- to orange, then red.If you are not interested in peppers that change colors as they grow, you can grow some that remain one color. You can try chocolate-colored peppers. Or purple. Or lavender ones. Each kind of pepper has its own special taste. For the best possible taste, however, peppers should be left on the vine for two or three weeks after they appear ready. This gives them full flavor and greatly increases the vitamins they contain.Another unusual plant is known as the yard-long bean, asparagus bean, dow ghok or snake bean. It grows up to one meter in length. It is an important part of the food supply in areas of Asia. American farmers like it because it is different, yet tastes very much like the green beans they traditionally grow. Each bean has from ten to twenty seeds. The outside or pod can be eaten. Some of the very long beans are green outside but have black-and-white or red seeds.Gourds are plants that people like to grow because of the many different shapes. They also have many uses. Some round gourds are dried, painted and made into containers. Others have long necks and big bodies. These are dried, cut and made into containers to pour drinking water.A kind of gourd called the luffa is used to make sponges. When it is fully grown, it is removed from the vine and permitted to dry for a few weeks. The gourd is placed in water for a few hours. The outer shell is then removed. The gourd is placed in the sun to dry. When it is fully dry, it is cut into pieces for use as sponges. Luffa sponges have a rough surface. They can be used to clean away dead skin cells, which makes them a popular skin-care product.70. Which of the following about the snake bean is not true?A. Its another name is yard-long bean.B. His new friend, the dog ,sat and watched ,as if wondering what was happening.―Well ,boy,‖ Buster whispered finally. ―That might do. Any more and I won’t be able to carry it!‖He swung the heavy bag into his shoulders, just as the lights on, nearly blinding him. He shielded his eyes with his hand.―You’re a very silly person,‖ the figure in the doorway said, his voice dry as dust. As the man came closer, Buster could see he was well dressed. His face seemed familiar, but Buster couldn’t quite place where he had seen him before.―You should have taken more notice of the sign outside,‖the man rasped. ―I knew about this attempted robbery last week and I also know you will end up behind bars for 20 years. S.For some parents the Internet can seem like a jungle, filled with danger for their children. But jungles contain wonders as well as hazards and, with good guides, some education and a few precautions (预防措施), the wilds of the Internet can be safely marching on, “kids have to be on line. If we tell our kids they can’t surf on the Internet we’re cutting them off from their future.” said an expert. Most kids have started to learn to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding tons of interesting Internet sites, and they can also locate places where you might not want your kids to go. There are search engines designed just for kids.A certain software contains only sites that have been selected as safe. But the most popular that was to limit access would be to use what is known as a “content screener (过滤器)”. But this can’t be wholly reliable, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what’s OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet.A few other tips:●Don’t put the PC in a child’s room but keep it in an area where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity.●Ask your child what he or she has been doing and about any friends they make on line.●Tell your child not to give on line strangers personal information, especially details like address and phone number.●And tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet them unless you go along.81.
