InhisbooksPopperarguedthattheempiricaltruthcannotbeknownwith
absolutecertainty.Evenscientificlawscan'tbeverifiedbeyondashadow

Scientificlawsarehypotheticalincharacterandtheirtruthremains
subjecttotesting.Ideologieswhichclaimtobeinpossessionofthe
ultimatetrutharemakingafalseclaim;therefore,theycanbeimposed
onsocietyonlybyforce.ThisappliestoCommunism,FascismandNational
Socialismalike.Alltheseideologiesleadtorepression.Popperproposed
amoreattractiveformofsocialorganization:anopensocietyinwhich
peoplearefreetoholddivergentopinionsandtheruleoflawallows
peoplewithdifferentviewsandintereststolivetogetherinpeace.
HavinglivedthroughbothNaziandCommunistoccupationhereinHungary,
Ifoundtheideaofanopensocietyimmenselyattractive.
