Module 1 Deep South Our Body and Healthy Habits(建议用时40分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AIn 1990, 22-year-old Christopher McCandless gave up his career plans, left behind everyone he knew, donated all his savings to charity, and went off on an adventure, hiking his way through America to Alaska.Of course, this is an unusual story. Most college graduates would not do so. However, studies show that in teenage years, people are more likely to try out new experiences. For example, instead of working his way up the same organisation like his grandfather did, a 15-year-old may dream about becoming a traveller—only to find in his early 20s that this attraction of new places is fading and change is less attractive. The reason why people become less keen to change as they get older may be that people generally have similar life patterns and demands. Most people aim to find a job and a partner. As they get older, they may have young children and elderly family members to look after. These responsibilities cannot be achieved without some degree of steadiness, which means that new experiences and ideas may not have a place in the person’s life. New experiences may bring excitement as well as insecurity, and so most people prefer to stay with the familiar. However, not every individual is the same. A child may want to play a different game every day and get fed up if nothing changes at the kindergarten. Another may play with the same children and toys on every visit. Young children who avoid new experiences will grow up to be more traditional than others. Psychologists(心理学家)argue that those who have more open personalities as children are more open than others might be when they are older and that young men have a greater interest in novelty than women, although as they age, this desire for new experiences fades more quickly than it does in women.【文章大意】通过Christopher McCandless的经历引出本文的话题: 青少年更容易接受冒险的生活。

Module 1 Deep South Small Talk(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AInformal conversation is an important part of any business relationship. Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand whichtopics are suitable and which are considered taboos(禁忌)in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their localhistory, art, and customs. They expect questions about their family andare sure to show pictures of their children. You may feel free to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conversation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments can be interesting—and they can cover pretty much or any topic—as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent(智慧的)manner. In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China and South Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious(和谐的)business relationship they’re trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children. As a general rule, it’s best not to talk about politics or religion(宗教)with your business friends. This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one’s salary is usually considered unsuitable. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticize a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host’s team.【文章大意】非正式谈话是任何商业关系中的一个重要组成部分, 不过, 谈话时不要无所顾忌, 一定要适可而止。

Module 1 Deep South My First Day at Senior High(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解AAnybody who’s noticed so many sweaty Sunday-morning photos on the Internet mustthink that marathons have recently regained popularity. According toRunning USA, an organization that t racks the sport’s growth, 52percent of runners today track themselves with some sort of GPS-enableddevice, like a smartphone or a fitness tracker. This statistic haslikely played a role in running’s growing appeal—the easily available tracking informati on has attracted people to the sport, and kept them going, for it’s possible for anyone to see in real time how it’s affecting their bodies.Today, free smartphone apps can give runners information on things like the number and length of their steps, their heart rate, even the estimated volume of oxygen they consume per minute. All this information can act as a reward and a motivator for the runner. “It’s one thing to hear encouragement from a coach, ”Bryan Boyle, editor of Runner’s World magazine, explains. “It’s quite another, however, to appreciate at a glance-progress made during weeks and months of running. ”But run-tracking technology doesn’t just help runners train harder. It also gives them the power to train more intelligently. Recreational runners today no longer have to guess how far or how fast they’ve run, or what their body is doing. If they can monitor their heart rate, they can make sure they’re hitting the most strategic pace on each run, which can significantly increase their chances of having a positive experience on the course during race day.No matter how much technology can promote the experience of running, though, many runners argue that the biggest benefit of the sport remains the chance to get outdoors, away from the computer, for a n hour. “There’s so much more to experience, ”adds Boyle, “fresh air, travel, shoot, just overall feeling better. There’s no app for that. ”【文章大意】文章主要讲解了现在跑步者运用跑步追踪技术来了解他们步数和长度信息, 他们的心率, 甚至估计每分钟的氧消耗, 这些都给了跑步者鼓励和刺激。
Module 1 Deep South Europe(建议用时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解A(2017·衡水模拟) The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPada lot in bed before they go to sleep.Charles Czeisler, a professor at Harvard Medical School, andhis colleagues got a small group of people for an experiment. Forfive days in a row, the people read either a paper book or an iPadfor four hours before sleep. Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin(褪黑激素)was in their blood at any given time. When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less sleepy at night and less active the following morning. People also took longer to fall asleep on the iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion(分泌)was delayed by an hour and a half. The researchers conclude in today’s journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed. Czeisler and colleagues go on, in the research paper, to note: “Reading an iPad in bed may increase cancer risk. ”However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens of phones and computers according to time of day, and there are also glasses that are made to filter(过滤)short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users, it needs more research.【文章大意】越来越多的人睡觉前躺在床上看电子产品, 但研究者发现, 这种做法会严重影响人们的健康, 甚至会增加患癌症的风险。

BIt was graduation day at Etihad Training Academy, where thenational airline of the United Arab Emirates holds a seven-weektraining course for new flight attendants.Despite her obvious pride, Ms Fathi, a 22-year-old from Egypt, was amazed to find herself here. “I never in my life thought I’d work abroad, ”said Ms Fathi, who was a university student in Cairo when she began noticing newspaper advertisements employing young Egyptians to work at airlines based in the Persian Gulf.Twenty years ago, unmarried Arab women like Ms Fathi, working outside their home countries, were rare. But just as young men from poor Arab nations poured into the oil-rich Persian Gulf states for jobs, more young women were doing so.Flight attendants have become the public face of the new mobility for some young Arab women, just as they were the faces of new freedoms for women in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. They have become a subject of social anxiety and fascination in much the same way.For many families, allowing a daughter to work may call her virtue into question. Yet this culture is changing, said Musa Shteiwi, a sociologist at Jordan University in Amman. “We’re noticing more and more single women going to the gulf these days, ”he said. “It’s still not exactly common, but over the last four or five years it has become quite an observable phenomenon. ”Many of the young Arab women working in the Persian Gulf take delight in their status as pioneers, role models for their friends and younger female relatives. Young women brought up in a culture that highly values community, have learned to see themselves as individuals. The experience of living independently and working hard for high salaries has forever changed their beliefs about themselves, though it can also lead to a painful sense of separation from their home countries and their families.—From New York Times 【文章大意】越来越多的阿拉伯国家的女孩子离开家园到国外去做空乘人员。
