1. 选题及问题描述
Problem Identification
I have been teaching Computer Science English to college students for a year. I found my
students seem to have many problems memorising English words. They cannot remember
to use some words that have just been learned in the text and sometimes when they do
remember, they spell them wrongly.
Problem Description
Having taught Computer Science English to college students for a year, the researcher
found that although some new words in the textbook had been taught in the classroom,
many students still considered them as new words and often forgot their meaning or spelt
them wrong. Moreover, most of the students were not interested in vocabulary learning.
They did not seem to want to make any efforts to improve their vocabulary. Therefore,
the research problem of this project is that many students are not good at spelling and
memorising the meaning of English words in computer science and they have no interest
in solving this problem.
2.问题分析
Problem Analysis
Two methods of problem analysis are used to analyze the problem. They are Socratic
Dialogue and Cause Analysis.
1. Socratic Dialogue
At this stage, the researcher asked a series of questions and then answered them.

Questions Answers 3 a) What kinds of words are the
students unfamiliar with? The words that have been studied and often
used in the textbook of Computer Science
English e.g. store, transfer
b) What are the students expected
to do with these words? They should easily remember these words
and know their meaning while reading.
c) What does “to remember them”
mean? It means the correct spelling, pronunciation,
understanding meaning.
d) How did the teacher deal with
these words? The teacher led the students to read and
give them the relevant Chinese meaning,
asked them to learn by heart and tested
them with dictation. Sometimes the
students were asked to translate sentences
into Chinese.
e) What did the teacher do to
develop the students‟ ability of
vocabulary expansion? Nothing.
2. Cause Analysis
This analysis starts with some factors that may contribute to the cause: the teacher‟s side,
the students‟ side as well as the techniques for teaching vocabulary.
a) Teacher’s side
i. Five years ago the teacher majored in computer science and got a university
degree of Bachelor of Science. Then she taught the course of Computer Science
Application in computer science department in a college and had no chance to
teach computer science English until last year. Thus the teacher may lack proper
experience of teaching English.
ii. Usually, the teacher just gives the students the Chinese meaning of English words.
iii. The teacher has not tried to find out better ways to teach vocabulary.
b) Students’ side
i. They are third-year college students and major in computer science.
ii. Some of them are not interested in English.
iii. Some of them are lazy.
iv. Some of them have low English level.
c) Techniques for teaching vocabulary
i. The teacher just asks her students to learn vocabulary by heart and test by
dictation.
ii. The teacher led her students in reading some texts or reading materials and asked 4 her students to translate them into Chinese.
iii. Better teaching techniques should be taken to improve the learning effect of her
students.
3. Results of Problem Analysis
After making the above analysis, the researcher came to know the cause for the problem
in the students‟ vocabulary learning. It was due to the teacher‟s ineffective design of
vocabulary activities. Based on the above analysis, the researcher was determined to
design a project that can render more effective vocabulary learning activities to solve the
problem.
3. 项目目的、假设
Project objective
The project objective is to develop the students‟ English listening comprehension so that
they can interact more freely with foreign guests.
Project hypothesis
It is hypothesized that students‟ ability to get the main points when listening to recorded
texts can be improved more effectively using summary spot dictation exercises. This
hypothesis can be proved by their figuring out more of the main points in the recording
on their own.
