A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO GULANGYU ISLAND(Xiamen FAO)Gulangyu IslandBeing one of China’s key scenic spots (1988), the island covers an area of 1.98 square kilometers with a population of 19 thousand. It attracts numerous visitors from home and abroad with its natural beauty, the popularity of pianos and the buildings of miscellaneous styles and origins.Early in 1860s, Denmark has set up a telegraph company, Dabei (Great Nordic) Telegraph Company, in Gulangyu. The company had the best facilities of that time and could send telegraphs to Shanghai, Hongkong and Taiwan. Northern European countries including Denmark, Norway and Sweden also opened consulate offices in the company. After the Opium War in mid 19th century Xiamen was opened for foreign trade. A dozen of countries including Britain and US came to build consulates, trading companies, churches and residences on the island. In 1902 it was set a concession area. In 1920s and 30s a lot of overseas Chinese from southeast Asia came to settle on the island and built their houses. By far 70% of the buildings on the island have a Southeast Asian style.Gulangyu Island was the first stop of western culture on their way to China. Residents on the island received good education at that time and gradually developed an appetite for music. In 1985 a giant statue of Zheng Chengong (15.7 meters high and made of 625 stones) was erected in the park and later complemented by other facilities to form the memorial garden of Zhen Chengong. There are bronze rilievos and a corridor decorated with inscribed steles. It used to be the location of Tait & Co. and hence gave its neighbourhood the name Dadeji (also as DaTaitJi).The Evil Trade of Chinese CooliesIn mid 19th century the trading companies established by foreign powers on Gulangyu Island were also engaged in the exploitation and sales of Chinese coolies. Tait & Co., Boyd Petroleum Co., Melcanpo & Co., and Jardine Matheson & Co. were among the biggest in this business at that time and therefore were called “Human Selling Companies”. The French first started human trade by shipping coolies from the ports in Xiamen and Gulangyu to Mauritius in 1845. Chinese laborers were also sold to Cuba, Honolulu, California, Sydney and some African islands. In the seven years from 1845 to 1852 there were as many as 6,255 Chinese sold to foreign counties from Gulangyu. Because these Chinese coolies lived a life worse than animal’s, they were often called “pigs.” This kind of labor trade lasted until the end of the 19th century.Yu GardenThe garden was built in 1984, covering 4,760 square meters. It is made in honor of Dr. Lin Qiaozhi, China’s most famous gynemetrics who w as born in 1901 on Gulangyu and died in 1983. Its front yard is paved with pebbles, reflecting an adaptation to the life in South China.Buildings of Early 20th Century(including Huang Rongyuan’s Mansion and Huang Nianyi’s Sea & Sky Building) Huang Rongyuan’s Mansion was built by Mr. Shi Guangcong, a Filipino Chinese in 1920 with typical western style represented by Roman columns and a variety of window frames.
