Water heats up more slowly than land , but once it has become warm it takes longer to 31 down. If the Earth's surface were entirely land, the temperature at night would 32 quite quickly and night would be much colder than day. as it is on the moon. This does 33 happen in inland deserts, hundreds of mile from any sea .The climate of the continents , especially in the temperate 34 , is very much affected by the oceans around them. The areas close to the sea have a maritime climate, 35 rather cool summers and warm winter. The interiors, far from the sea, have a 36 climate with extremely hot summers and cold winters .Rain 37 from the evaporation of rivers, seas and lakes. Even after heavy rain , the pavements in a city do not take long to dry 38 the rainwater evaporates into the air. On a warm dry it evaporates very rapidly, 39 warm air can take in more moisture than cold air. But at any particular temperature, the 40 can hold only a certain maximum amount of water vapor. The air is then saturated, like a sponge that cannot hold 41 more water. The lower the temperature, the 42 water vapor is required to saturate the air.All over the surface of the Earth, minions of tons of water are 43 every second, condensing in the air into drops so small 44 it takes thousands of them to make a single raindrop. It is 45 drops that make clouds. When clouds roll in from the sea over the warmer land, they are forced to 46 and become cooler in the colder upper atmosphere. As the air cools down it pass through its saturation point and 47 some of its water vapor turns to rain. Day in ,day out, the 48 water circulates between the air and the land: rivers 49 to make clouds, clouds make rain, rainmakes rivers which in turn run into the sea. This is called the rain 50 .31. I could have loved him as I did my mother, but he seemed to hold us off so that we could not approach him or sit on his knee as love to do. I believe he had a hard life as a child, and I know that he left school at the age of ten and started to work. This made him an unsociable man, unfriendly even to the people closest to him. I never knew him to have a close friend as the other men did.Everything he did had to be precise. If he chopped the sticks for the fire, each stick would be the same length and thickness as all the others, and they would all be stacked without one out of place. His motto(座右铭) was “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well”. In our household his word was law and nobody dared dispute it.He worked hard when in a job and saw to it that we children learned the meaning of work. My mother did not have much pleasure but I do not remember her ever complaining – except on Sunday afternoons when father would take off his clothes and get into bed, leaving her to mend his working clothes while he had his rest. This she disliked very much, for the clothes were dirty from the work he had been doing and she hated handing anything that was not clean.51. The writer found it difficult to understand her father because he ___________.A. looked distantB. rejected affectionC. ill-treated the familyD. disliked children52. What did the writer think made her father unsociable?A. An unhappy childhood.B. A lack of friends.C. No interest in hobbies.D. Not smoking or drinking.53. What was particular about the sticks for the fire?A. They were arranged in a pattern.B. They were chopped in only one place.C. They were similar in length.D. They all weighed the same.54. The writer’s father believed that __________.A. you should only do things for which you have the abilityB. only important jobs are worth doing wellC. you should only attempt worthwhile jobsD. anything you do should be done to your best ability55. What did the writer’s mother dislike about Sunday afternoons?A. Working while her husband rested.B. Repairing her husband’s clothes.C. Not being able to have any pleasure.D. Touching unclean clothes.Passage 2Nonverbal communication has to do with gestures, movements, and closeness of two people when they are talking. The scientists say that these gestures, movements, and so forth have the meaning our words do not carry. For example, the physical distance between two speakers can be important. North Americans often complain that South Americans are being “pushy” because they tend to stand close to the North American when speaking, whereas the South American often considers the North American to be “cold” or “distant” because he keeps a greater distance between himself and the person he is speaking to. In the Middle East it is considered flirtatious(调情) for a woman to allow a man to look at her in the eye. This “eye contact”provides another example of what we’re calling nonverbal communication. A social psychologist has observed that there is more eye contact between people who like each other than there is between people who don’t like each other. The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in you rather than the amount of interest he has in the thing you are talking about.56. Nonverbal communication includes all forms listed below except ________.A. gesturesB. body distanceC. talksD. eye contact57. While talking, the South Americans tend to _________.A. talk loudlyB. be close to each otherC. keep a certain distance between themD. push each other58. While they are talking, the North Americans tend to ________ .A. talk loudlyB. be close to each otherC. keep a certain distance between themD. be cold59. It would be considered ________ in the Middle East, if a woman allows a man to look at herin the eye.A. politeB. impoliteC. acceptableD. unacceptable60. More eye contacts may indicate all of the following except that ________.A. people like each otherB. people are interested in the topicC. people are interested in each otherD. people want to keep talking五. They show that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behavior in society, and was reading English literature. At school he seemed only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal education was surprising brief fore a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamburg. Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings. They point out that at a circus, for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them. Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modern times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russia, for example, pigeons which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak. This turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeonto do this and one pigeon can inspect 3000 to 4000 balls an hour. Apes have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that these large monkeys maybe one day gather crops and even drive trains.56. The length of time that the person whom you are speaking to looks at your eyes indicates the amount of interest he has in you rather than the amount of interest he has in the thing you are talking about.36. (阅读理解题)Passage 1Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Ours is a big world, and full of many different people. People with many varying (不同的) points of view are often running up against others who have different opinions. Those of us who smoke are just one group of many. Recently, the activism (采取行动) of non-smokers has reminded us of the need to be considerate (体谅的) of others when we smoke in public. But, please! Enough is enough! We should like to remind non-smokers that being polite is a two-way street. If you politely request thatsomeone not smoke you are more likely to receive an agreeable response than if you give an ugly look and say something unkind. If you speak directly to someone, you are more likely to get what you want than if you complain to the management. Many of us have been smoking for so long that we sometimes forget that others are not used to the smell of burning tobacco. We' re human, and like everyone else, we occasionally offend unknowingly. But most of us are open to friendly suggestions and comments, and quite willing to change our behavior to accommodate others.Smokers are people, too. We laugh and cry. We have hopes, dreams, and aspirations. We have children, mothers, and pets. We eat our hamburgers with everything on them and give respect to the flag at Fourth of July picnics. We hope you'll remember that the next time a smoker light up in public.(1). (阅读理解题)Passage 2Nature has supplied every animal except man with some covering for his body such as fur, feathers, hair, seals, shells or a thick hide. But man has nothing but a thin skin. If someone were to ask us, "Why did human beings start to cover their bodies with clothes?" most of us would answer, "To keep themselves warm, of course."It is only when we begin to think about it a little that we realize that clothes are worn for a great many reasons that have nothing to do with our need for warmth at all. For instance, we wear clothes to some extent in order to decorate ourselves -- to make ourselves, if possible, look more graceful or dignified (高贵的) than we are.Clothes of a special kind are often worn to show that the wearer has authority or power. The individual wearing them is treated with respect because he occupies a certain office. The judge in the court, for instance, might look a very ordinary and unimpressive figure without his wig (假发) and gown. Clothes are an essential part of all ceremonial occasions, whether it is connected with religion, the law, parliament, royalty, the fighting forces, or the state.Sometimes, even in civilized countries, people wear some article of clothing, or some jewel, because they believe that it will bring them luck or protect them from evil or illness, or because it is connected with their beliefs.None of these reasons for wearing clothes — to decorate ourselves, to show our position in the world, for ceremonial purposes, for "luck", to give ourselves dignity and authority — have anything to do with our need for warmth and protection from the weather.(1). He plugs into his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off form contact with our fellow human being. The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automatically paid int o their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take our money from their accounts. Another area that technology is changingis entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapesto watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms. (倍速P130)(1). Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and lived from 1833 to 1896. Alfred Nobel was a chemist and inventor. He made two important inventions. And so he became very rich. Although he was rich, Nobel was not a happy man. He never married nor had children. Also, he wasa sick man in a large part of his life. Nobel died at the age ofsixty-three. When he died, he left a fund (基金) of $9,000,000. The money was to be used in giving prizes to those who made outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and the promotion (促进)of world peace. The first Nobel Prizes were given on December 10th, 1901, five years after Nobel’s death. Many famous people from all over the world have been given Nobel Prizes for theirachievements. The third part of the prize is a large amount of money—about $40,000. Often a Prize is given to just one person, but not always. Sometimes, a Prize is shared. It may be given to two or three people who have worked together. Sometimes a Prize is not given at all if there is no outstanding achievement. In 1972, for example, no Nobel Peace Prize was given. It is the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm that decides whether to give the Prize or not(1).
