“词”作为这种诗体的专称,还是比较后起的。
在唐五代时,这种新诗体原被称为曲子词。
后来在发展过程中它又有了诗馀、乐府、长短句等等别名。
这些名称都代表着词体的特点。
词是曲子词的简称,就是歌词的意思。
曲子词这个名称,最清楚地表明了词体的性质,表明了词与曲的关系。
曲是指音乐的部分,词是指文辞的部分。
在乐曲歌辞中,这二者原是一个东西的两个方面,不可分离的。
清刘熙载《艺概》卷四说“词即曲之词,曲即词之曲”,清宋翔凤《乐府馀论》说“以文写之则为词,以声度之则为曲”,这些都对词曲两者之间的关系作了正确的解释。
所以,我们可以说曲子词是词体最确切的全称。
诗馀的名称是晚出的,大约始于南宋。
南宋初林淳的词集名《定斋诗馀》,廖行之的词集名《省斋诗馀》。
如果说这些集名是后人所加,那么,至迟宋宁宗庆元年间编定的《草堂诗馀》,已经表示诗馀这个名称的成立。
把词称为诗馀,有两种解释。
一种认为词是诗的下降,是诗的馀绪剩义。
这是轻视词的看法。
清毛先舒《填词名解》说:“填词不得名诗馀,犹曲自名曲,不得名词馀(元明散曲又称为词馀)。
又诗有近体,不得名古诗馀,楚辞不得名经馀也。
故填词本按实得名,名实恰合,何必名诗馀哉!”清汪森《词综序》也说:“古诗之于乐府,近体之于词,分镳并骋,非有先后;谓诗降为词,以词为诗之馀,殆非通论矣。
”都是反对把词贬低称为诗馀。
另一种认为词是出于唐代的近体诗,是从律诗绝句中变化出来的;唐人是先用五、七言诗入乐,到了唐末五代,才改用长短句。
如宋翔凤《乐府馀论》解释词之所以“谓之诗馀者,以词起于唐人绝句。
如太白之《清平调》,即以被之乐府;太白《忆秦娥》、《菩萨蛮》,皆绝句之变格,为小令之权舆。
旗亭画壁赌唱,皆七言断句。
后至十国时,遂竞为长短句,自一字两字至七字,以抑扬高下其声,而乐府之体一变。
