Task

Step 1 Lead-in

Watch a video about the four seasons

T: Today we’ll learn Unit 7 Task. First watch a video, please.

Step 2 Presentation

1. Brainstorm

T: Boys and girls, just now you enjoyed a video, do you like it? Yes, very beautiful.

So you know something about seasons. Can you tell me the names of the season,

the weather, sights, activities and festivals during the seasons. (Show three

pictures of spring, summer and autumn)

T: (Show a picture of winter) Look at this picture. It’s cold in winter. The

temperature is usually below zero and the rivers are frozen. It’s often snowy.

We can see deep white snow. The land is quiet and beautiful. We have Ice Festival

each year. There are beautiful ice lanterns everywhere. What can we do in winter?

We can make snowmen and throw snowballs at each other, screaming and laughing.

We can also go skiing. It’s very exciting. What festival or holiday can we

have? Yes, we have Spring Festival, Christmas and winter holiday. It’s really

great.

2. Listen and answer

T: Now listen to the tape and answer the five questions. Which season does the writer like best?

What’s the weather like?

What does Harbin look like at that time?

What do people like doing in this season?

What festivals or holidays are there during this season?

3. Complete the article with proper words

T: Simon is reading an article about the winter in Harbin. Please help him complete

it.

4. Read and find out about the structure

T: Read the whole article carefully. In this article, how many paragraphs are there?

What’s each about? Yes. It has three parts. The first part is Para. 1. It tells

us the writer’s opinion. The second part is Para. 2 and Para. 3. It tells us

the reasons. Para. 2 is about the weather and sights. Para. 3 is about the

activities and festivals. The third part is Para. 4. It tells the readers the

writer’s the feeling. Let’s try to finish this mind map with the key phrases.

5. Retell

T: Let’s retell the article about the winter in Harbin according to this mind

map.

6. Analyze the article

(1) Coherence of paragraph

T: So far, we have known the structure of the article. Now analyze the coherence

of paragraph the writer uses. Find out how the writer organizes the ideas.

(2) Proper conjunctions and adverbs

a. Find the conjunctions and adverbs in the article

T: Let’s see how the writer uses proper conjunctions and adverbs. Circle

them. Complete the short passage.

b. Practice: fill in the blanks

(3) Variety of sentences

T: Good! Now find some good sentences. Can we express them in different ways?

The first example:

It is exciting to have snowball fights.

The second example:

We throw snowballs at each other, screaming and laughing.

In spring, we fly kites, running and laughing (run and laugh).

In autumn, we/ farmers work to harvest crops, sweating and laughing.
