“Manifest Destiny” and the American Dream
The Federalists wanted to create a strong and efficient federal government, but sometimes alienated the people, for example by passing high taxes on houses, land, and slaves, and in turn causing several rebellions.
The War of 1812
The Americans declared war against Britain because of interferences with American trade in Europe, mistreatment of American sailors, and Britain’s encouragement of hostilities with the Native Americans.
Slavery
Slavery was an established institution in the American economy, particularly in the South, but many people became convinced that it was an undesirable influence on society.

❖ The Monroe Doctrine is a U.S. doctrine which, on December 2, 1823, stated that European powers were no longer to colonize or interfere with the affairs of the newly independent states of the Americas.

Slavery
There were also many disputes in the law about the slaves:
Washington D.C. was burned, but the Americans eventually won.
Native Americans were later forced to move west (to Oklahoma) in the Trail of Tears (1830).
Western expansion dispersed this wealth, as Americans asserted a right to spread out to places like Oregon, California, and Texas, an idea called “Manifest Destiny”.

George Washington

George Washington (February 22, 1732 December 14, 1799) served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797 and as the commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1783. Because of his significant role in the revolution and in the formation of the United States, he is often revered by Americans as the "Father of Our Country” The Continental Congress appointed Washington commander-in-chief of the American revolutionary forces in 1775.

Background


The British government started imposing new taxes on sugar, coffee and textiles(纺织业) . They passed many laws such as the Quartering Act(驻军法案) and the Stamp Act(印花税法 ).

• During the first 150 years, the British colonies in North America became a ―melting pot‖. • By the early 1760s, English settlers had established 13 colonies along the Atlantic coast.
The First Permanent English Colony
• In 1607 • Three ships crossed the Atlantic Ocean and landed by the side of a river--the James River 杰姆斯河. • The first English colony was founded at Jamestown詹姆斯顿, Virginia 维吉尼亚州.
fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day every year. The celebration of Thanksgiving Day has been observed on that date until today. The pattern of the Thanksgiving celebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner is planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, walnuts and grapes. There will be plum pudding, mince pie, other varieties of food and cranberry juice and squash. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the most traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years.

During their first winter, over half of the settlers died of starvation or epidemics. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring.
