It has been announced that a comet (彗星) is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth. On 17th July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth’s at mosphere with a massive explosion. About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the sea bed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina. Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the Earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won’t be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive.Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?33. There arecertainly important changes that need to be made at every level—statewide, nationwide, and even worldwide—that can help preserve the Earth. That doesn’tmean, though, that there’s nothing that can be done on an individual level. We spoke to eight of the country’s leadin g environmentalists and asked themthis question: Their individual answers varied, but the point they truly wanted to stress did not: One person can make a difference. The other common idea was that they had a difficult time limiting it to only one tip. Matt Petersen, president of Global Green USA, recommended that, in the long run, we rebuild our buildings so that they are green.Dr. Brent Blackwelder, president of Friends of the Earth, emphasizes the importance of the state and federal tax code on the energy choices we make, and feels this is a widely overlooked issue. One example cited is the “gas-guzzler(耗油量极大的汽车)tax, ” as it is often referred to. This loophole(漏洞)has encouraged automakers to focus their production and advertising efforts on the products that end up being the biggest gas-guzzlers and polluters.Equally the carbon footprint, measured in carbon dioxide units, calculates the impact human beings have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouses gases produced. Both our direct emissions(排放)of carbon dioxide, like the burning of fossil fuels and the indirect emissionsof carbon dioxide as a result of the manufacture and breakdown of everyday products are calculated into the carbon footprint measurement. Commonplace activities like eating red meat and drinking bottled water are slowly but surely contributing to the devastation of our environment. So take our experts’ tips into consideration. This Earth Day, give Mother Nature the day off. Take public transportation, turn out your lights, and try not to print every one of your e-mails. It’s the little things that really can make a difference.37. According to the passage, eight environmentalists _______.A. didn’t agree with each other at allB. had the same suggestionsC. all thought each person could play a part in environment protectionD. came from different countries38. Dr. Brent Blackwelder held the view that _______.A. we should build more green buildingsB. drivers using gas-guzzlers should pay higher taxC. fede ral government had paid much attention to the problem caused by gas-guzzlersD. gas-guzzlers produced less pollution than expected39. The underlined word “devastation” probably means _______.A. damageB. protectionC. educationD. change40. What is mainly discussed in this passage?A. Carbon footprint.B. Gas-guzzler tax.C. Celebration of the Earth Day.D.

In a society where life continues year after year with few changes, the language does not change either. The earliest known languages had difficult grammar but a small, limited vocabulary. Over the century, the grammar changed, and the vocabulary grew. For example, the English and Spanish people who came to America during the sixteenth century gave names to all the new plants and animals they found. In this way, hundreds of new words were introduced into English and Spanish vocabularies. Today life is changing very fast, and language is changing fast too. There are several major(主要) language families in the world. Some scientists say there are nine main families, but other scientists divide them differently. The languages in each family are connected, and scientists think that they came from the same parent language. About 3 percent of the people in the world speak languages that are not in these major families.46. Here‟s a great piece of writing reflecting parent‟s particular ways on the parenting style that have become known humorously as helicopter parenting and submarine (潜水艇) parenting.Helicopter parents hover over their children, managing every aspect of their child‟s life. On the contrary, submarine parents remain “hidden” coming to the surface when guidance is needed. While helicopter parents may have the best intentions, in reality, they are raising children with few problem solving skills. Children with hovering parents never get the chance to face disappointment and build up their ability to recover from misfortune.Think about your typical submarine. Submarines usually remain underwater. In case of a need for emergency surfacing, submarines can rise so quickly they are driven partially out of the water. Submarine parents also remain out of sight, yet able to pop up in the case of an emergency.I admit I‟m a submarine mom. My job as a parent is to have fun with my daughters while letting them explore and learn natural consequences. My older daughter found herself acting in commercials and making more than minimum wage as a teen. To give her a sense of the real world, I insisted she spend three weeks every summer, picking strawberries and earning $3.50 on a good day. When my youngest daughter Sondra was six, she wanted a very expensive American Girl Doll. I cut the full color 18-inch picture out of the American Girl catalogue and had it laminated (压膜). “Here‟s your American Girl Doll.” I said “When you turn nine, I‟ll buy you the 3D doll on your birthday.” Sondra played with her flat doll for months, making clothes and furniture for her. She learned creativity. I saved $88.00.6. What is the text mainly about?A. Various means of transportation.B. Funny experiences of a mom.C. Humorous stories about parents.D. The author supports her point of view mainly by ____.A. stating facts and offering adviceB. using figures and giving evidenceC. analyzing data and drawing conclusionsD. making comparisons and giving examplesC1If sustainable competitive advantage depends on workforce skills, American firms have a problem. Human-resource management is not traditionally seen as central to the competitive survival of the firm in the United States. Skill acquisition is considered an individual responsibility. Labor is simply another factor of production to be hired — rented at the lowest possible cost — much as one buys materials or equipment. The lack of importance attached to human-resource management can be seen in the corporation management. In an American firm the chief financial officer is almost always second in command. The post of head of human-resource management is usually a specialized job, off at the edge of the corporation hierarchy(等级制度). The executive(经理,执行官) who holds it is never consulted on major strategic decisions and has no chance to move up to Chief Executive Officer(CEO). By way of contrast, in Japan the head of human-resource management is central — usually the second most important executive, after the CEO, in the firm‟s hierarchy. While American firms often talk about the vast amounts spent on training their work force, in fact they invest less in the skills of their employees than do either Japanese or German firms. The money they do invest is also more highly concentrated on professional and managerial employees. And the limited investments that are made in training workers are also much more narrowly focused on the specific skills necessary to do the next job rather than on the basic background skills that make it possible to absorb new technologies. As a result, problems arise when new breakthrough technologies arrive. If American workers, for example, take much longer to learn how to operate new flexible manufacturing stations than workers in Germany (as they do), the effective cost of those stations is lower in Germany than it is in the United States. More time is required before equipment is up, running in production, and the need for extensive(广泛的) retraining generates(产生) costs and creates bottlenecks that limit the speed with which new equipment can be used. The result is a slower pace of technological change, and in the end the skills of the bottom half of the population affect the wages of the top half. If the bottom half can‟t effectively make the processes thathave to be operated, the management and professional jobs that go with these processes will disappear.11. What is the main idea of the passage?A. American firms are different from Japanese firms in human-resource management.B. Extensive retraining is necessary to effective human-resource management.C. The human-resource management strategies of American firms affect their competitive capacity(能力,容量).D. The head of human-resource management must be in the central position in a firm‟s hierarchy.12. Which of the following applies to the management of human resources in American companies?A. They hire people at the lowest cost with relatively best skills.B. They see the gaining of skills as their employees‟ own business.C. They attach more importance to workers than to equipment.D. They only hire skilled workers because of keen competition.13. What does this passage say about the head of human-resource management in an American firm?A. He is one of the most important executives in the firm.B. His post is likely to disappear when new technologies are introduced.C. He doesn‟t participate in making important decisions in the firm.D. He is directly under the chief financial executive.14. The money most American firms put in training mainly goes to ____.A. technological and managerial staff.B. workers who lack basic background skills.C. workers who can operate new equipment.D. top executives.15. Which factor most probably adds to the competitive advantage of a firm according to the passage?A. The introduction of new technologies.B. The attachment of importance to the top half of the employees.C. The rational(理性的) composition of professional and managerial employees.D. The improvement of workers‟ basic skills.D1The western alphabet, which is used in Europe, the Americas, Africa, Australia and New Zealand as well as in other countries, originated in the Middle East. The people who gave the world this alphabet were the Phoneacians, a people who established colonies all over the Mediterranean, including Carthage in Africa and Gades in Spain. In their alphabet, the letters were represented by little pictures which represented sounds. The Phoneacian A was aelph, which means “bull”, and it was made from a little picture of a bull‟s head. The letter B was beth which meant “house”, and showed the round-roofed buildings which you can still see today in Syria. The Phoneacians had contact with another nation of sailors, the Greeks, with whom they fought and traded. The Greeks also started to use the Phoneacian alphabet. They changed the names, so aelph and beth became alpha and beta. The shapes of the letters are the same, but they have been turned sideways. If you know any Greek, you can try turning the letters around again, and see how they look. You will see that the curve on the right of the Greek A becomes the horns of a little bull.Of course, the first two letters of the alphabet give it its name. Over the years there have been changes. She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.“What I mean is,” explained the recorder, “do you have a job, or are you just a …”“Of course I have a job,” said Emily. “I‟m a mother.”“We don‟t list …mother‟ as an occupation… …housewife‟ covers it,” said the recorder. One day I found myself in the same situation. The clerk was obviously a career woman, confident and possessed of a high sounding title. “What is your occupation?” she asked. The words simply popped out. “I‟m a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.”The clerk paused, ballpoint pen frozen in midair.I repeated the title slowly, then I stared with wonder as my statement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.“Might I ask,” said the clerk with new interest, “Just what you do in this field?”Coolly, without any trace of panic in my voice, I heard myself reply, “I have a continuing program of research (what mother doesn‟t), in the lab and in the field (normally I would have said indoors and out). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most careers and rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.”There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk‟s voice as she completed the form, stood up, and showed me out.As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up (受鼓舞) by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants — ages 13, 7, and 3.Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model (a 6-month-old baby), in the child-development program, testing out a new vocal pattern.I felt proud! I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable (不可缺少的) to mankind than “just another mother.”Motherhood…What a glorious career!
