No.1Many things about language are a mystery and will remain so. However, we now do know something about it. First, we know that all people have a language of some sort. No human race anywhere on earth is so backward that it has no language of its own at all. Second, there is no such thing as a primitive language. There are many people whose cultures are undeveloped but, the languages they speak are by no means like this. In all the languages existing in the world today, there are complexities that must have been there for years. Third, we know that all languages are perfectly adequate. Each is a perfect means of expressing its culture. And finally, we know that language changes over time, which is natural and normal if a language is to survive. The language which remains unchanged is nothing but dead.No.2To improve your reading habits, you must understand the characteristics of a good reader. First, the good reader usually reads rapidly. Of course, he does not read every piece of material at the same rate. But whether he is reading a newspaper or a chapter in a physics text, his reading rate is relatively fast. He has learned to read for ideas rather than words one at a time. Next, the good reader can recognize and understand general ideas and specific details. Thus he is able to comprehend the material with a minimum of effort and a maximum of interest. Finally, the good reader has in his command several special skills, which he can apply to reading problems as they occur. For the college student, the most helpful of these skills include making use of the various aids to understanding that most text books provide and skim-reading for a general survey. No.3Money is accepted across the world as payment for goods or services. People use money to buy food, clothes and hundreds of other things. In the past, many different things were used as money. People on Pacific islands once exchanged shells for goods. The Chinese used cloth and knives. In Africa, elephant tusks or salt were used. Even today, some people in Africa are still paid in salt. Coins were first invented by the Chinese. Originally, they were round pieces of metal with a hole in the center, so that a piece of string could keep them together. This made doing business much easier, but people still found coins inconvenient to carry when they wanted to buy something expensive. To solve this problem, the Chinese again came up with the solution. They began to use paper money for coins. Now paper notes are used throughout the world. No.4It is generally believed that wrist watches are an exception to the normal sequence in the evolution of man's jewelry. Reversing the usual order, they were first worn by women, and then adopted by men. In the old days, queens included wrist watches among their crown jewelry. Later, they were worn by Swiss workers and farmers. Until the World War I, Americans associated the watch with fortunehunters. Then army officers discovered that the wrist watch was most practical for active combat. Race car drivers also loved to wear wrist watches, and pilots found them most useful while flying. Soon men dared to wear wrist watches without feeling self-conscious. By 1924, some 30 percent of man's watches were worn on the wrist. Today, the figure is 90 percent. And they are now worn by both men and women for practical purposes rather than for decoration.No.5The Internet is the most significant progress in the field of communications. Imagine a book that never ends, a library with a million floors, or imagine a research project with thousands of scientists working around the clock forever. This is the magic of the Internet. Yet the Internet has the potential for good and bad. One can find well-organized information-rich websites. At the same time, one can also find wasteful websites. Most websites are known as different Internet applications. These include online games, chartrooms and so on. These things have great power, too. Sometimes the power can be so great that young people may easily become victims to their attraction. So we need to recognize the seriousness of the problem. We must work together to use its power for better ends.No.6The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum was opened in Geneva in1988. It tells us the story of men and women who in the course of the major events of the last 150 years have given us assistance to victims of war and natural disasters. The organizationwas established in 1863 and was based on an idea by a Swiss businessman called Henry Durant. He had witnessed the heavy casualties caused by the battle of Solferino in Italy in which 40,000 people were killed, wounded or missing. He had seen the lack of medical services in the great suffering of many of the wounded that simply died from lack of care. The International Red Cross or Red Crescent exists to help the victims of conflict and disasters regardless of their nationalities. The symbol of the organization was originally just a red cross. It has no religious significance. The founders of the movement adopted it as it attributes to Switzerland. However, during the Russo-Turkish war, the Turks felt the cross could be seen as an offensive to Muslim soldiers and the second symbol, the Red Crescent was adopted for use by national organizations in the Islamic world. Both are our official symbols. No.7The most common type of child abuse is beating with the hands over an instrument, usually a cane in some places. Nearly a third of the abused children we see are in the age group between six and ten, and about sixty-five percent of them are boys. This is the age group when children are first expected to study hard in school. Boys, of course, attract more abuse such as beating because once again parental expectations are high and boys tend to be more energetic and difficult to control than girls. Most experts seem to agree that child abuse is caused by a combination of social and psychological factors. Families who beat their children are not particularly different from other people. The only difference that exists between them is that they lack skills in establishing good relationships withtheir children. These families too, generally speaking, have other problems, such as marriage problems or financial problems. Some parents are hurting their children because they strongly believe in the use of traditional disciplinary methods. But many of them have emotional problems. They are often the victims of the violence themselves. Sometimes they even bear an unreasonable hatred for a child because they believe that the child has brought the family bad luck.No.8While Gail Obcamp, an American artist was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting to an audience that included visitors from Japan, she was confused to see that many of her Japanese listeners have their eyes closed. Were they tuned off because an American had the nerve to instruct Japanese in their own art form or they deliberately tried to signal their rejection of her? Obcamp later found out that her listeners were not being disrespectful. Japanese listeners sometimes closed their eyes to enhance concentration. Her listeners were showing their respect for her by chewing on her words. Some day you may be either a speaker or a listener in a situation involving people from other countries or members of minority group in North America. Learning how different cultures signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings. Here are some examples. In the deaf culture of North America, many listeners show applause not by clapping their hands but by waving them in the air. In some cultures, both overseas and in some minority groups in North America, listeners are considered disrespectful if they look directly at the speaker. Respect is shown by looking in the generaldirection but avoiding direct eye contact. In some countries, whistling by listeners is a sign of approval while in other courtiers it is a form of insult.No.9Obtaining good health insurance is a real necessity while you are studying overseas. It protects you from minor and major medical expenses that can wipe out not only your savings, but you dreams of an education abroad. There are often two different types of health insurance you can consider buying:international travel insurance and student insurance in the country where you will be going. An international travel insurance policy is usually purchased in your home country before you go abroad. It generally covers a wide variety of medical services, and are often given a list of doctors in the area where you will travel who may even speak your native language. The drawback might be that you may not get your money back immediately. In other words, you may have to pay all your medical expenses and then later submit your receipts to the insurance company. On the other hand, getting student health insurance in the country where you will study might allow you to only pay a certain percentage of the medical cost at the time of service and thus, you don’t have to have sufficient cash to pay the entire bill at once. Whatever you decide, obtaining some form of health insurance is something you should consider before you go overseas. You shouldn’t wait until you are sick with major medical bills to pay off.No.10There are between 3000 and 6000 public languages in the world, and we must add approximately 6 billion private languages since each one of us necessarily has one. Considering these facts, the possibilities for breakdowns in communication seem infinite in number. However, we do communicate successfully from time to time. And we do learn to speak languages. But learning to speak languages seems to be a very mysterious process. For a long time, people thought that we learned a language only by imitation and association. For example, a baby touches a hot pot and starts to cry. The mother says, “Hot, hot!”And the baby, when it stops crying, imitates the mother and says, “Hot, hot!”However, Noam Chomsky, a famous expert in language, pointed out that although children do learn some words by imitation and association, they also combine words to make meaningful sentences in ways that are unique, unlearned and creative. Because young children can make sentences they have never heard before, Chomsky suggested that human infants are born with the ability to learn language. Chomsky meant that underneath all the differences between public and private languages, there is a universal language mechanism that makes it possible for us, as infants, to learn any language in the world. This theory explains the potential that human infants have for learning language. But it does not really explain how children come to use language in particular ways.No.11Some people want to make and save a lot of money in order to retireearly. I see people pursuing higher paying and increasingly demanding careers to accomplish this goal. They make many personal sacrifices in exchange for income today. The problem is that tomorrow might not come. Even if it all goes according to plan, will you know how to be happy when you are not working if you spend your entire life making money? More importantly, who will be around for you to share your leisure time with? At the other extreme are people who live only for today. Why bother saving when I might not be here tomorrow, they argue. The danger of this approach is that tomorrow may come after all. And most people don't want to spend all their tomorrows working for a living. The earlier neglect of saving, however, makes it difficult not to work when you are older. You maybe surprise to hear me say that if you must pick an extreme I think it's better to pick the spend-all approach. As long as you don't mind continuing to work, assuming your health allows, you should be OK. At least, you are making use of your money, and hopefully deriving value and pleasure from it. Postponing doing what you love and being with people you love until retirement can be a mistake. It may never come. Retirement can be a great time for some people. For others, it is a time of boredom, loneliness and poor health.No.12To see if hair color affects a person’s chances of getting a job, researchers at California State University asked 136 college students to review the resume and photograph of a female applicant for a job as an accountant. Each student was given the same resume. But the applicant’s picture was altered, so that in some photos her hair was golden, in some red and in some brown. The result? With brown hair, the woman was rated mote capable, and she was offered a higher salary than when she had golden or red hair. Other studies have found similar results. Many respondents rate women with golden hair as less intelligent than other people, and red heads as more temperamental. Women with red or golden hair are victims of the common practice of stereotyping. A stereotype is a simplistic orexaggerated image that humans carry in their minds about groups of people. For example, "lawyers are shrewd and dishonest" is a popular stereotype. Stereotyping can occur in public speaking classes. When trying to choose a speech topic, some males think that women are uninterested in how to repair cars, while some females think that men are uninterested in creative hobbies, such as knitting and needle point. We should reject stereotypes, because they force all people in a group into the same simple pattern. They fail to account for individual differences, and the wide range of characteristics among members of any group. Some lawyers are dishonest, yes, but many are not. Some women don’t like repairing cars, yes, but some are enthusiastic mechanics.No.14Wilma Subra had no intention of becoming a public speaker. After graduating from college with degrees in chemistry and microbiology, she went to work at Gulf South Research Institute in Louisiana. As part of her job, she conducted field research on toxic substances in the environment, often in minority communities located near large industrial polluters. She found many families were being exposed to high, sometimes deadly levels of chemicals and other toxic substances. But she was not allowed to make her information public. Frustrated by these restrictions, Subra left her job in 1981, created her own company, and has devoted the past two decades to helping people fight back against giant industrial polluters. She works with families and community groups to conduct environmental tests, interpret test results, and organize for change. Because of her efforts, dozens of toxic sites across the country havebeen cleaned up. And one chemical industry spokesperson calls her "a top gun" for the environmental movement. How has Subra achieved all this? Partly through her scientific training, partly through her commitment to environmental justice. But just as important is her ability to communicate with people through public speaking. "Public speaking,”she says, "is the primary vehicle I use for reaching people. As I'm sure you all know, Morrisonis both a popular and a highly respected author, and it's not easy to be both. Born in 1931,Morrison has written some of the most touching and intelligent works on the African-Americanexperience ever written by anyone, and yet to call her an “African-American writer” doesn'tseem to do her ju stice. In many ways, she's simply an American writer—and certainly one ofour best.Beloved is a truly remarkable work. It was recommended for nearly every major literary prize, incl uding the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and it in fact wonthe P ulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988. Morrison herself is distinguished for having won the NobelPrize fo r literature in 1993.What makes Beloved unique is the skillful, sure way in which Morrison blends intensely personals torytelling and American history, racial themes and gender themes, the experience of Blackswith the experience of all people everywhere, the down-to-earth reality of slavery with a sense ofmyst erious spirituality. We'll be paying special attention to these themes as we discuss this work. I'm particularlyinterest ed in your views on the relative importance of race and gender in this book. Is it moreimportant t hat Sethe, the main character, is black or that she's a woman? Which contributesmore to her bei ng? What does Morrison tell us about both?Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.16. What do we learn about Toni Morrison?17. What honor did Toni Morrison receive in 1993?18. What does the speaker tell us about Sethe, the main character in Morrison's novel Beloved?Passage TwoThe topic of my talk today is gift-giving. Everybody likes to receive gifts, right? So you may thinkth at gift-giving is a universal custom. But actually, the rules of gift-giving vary quite a lot, and notkn owing them can result in great embarrassment. In North America, the rules are fairly simple. If yo u're invited to someone's home for dinner, bring wine or flowers or a small item from yourcountr y. Among friends, family, and business associates, we generally don't give gifts on otheroccasions except on someone's birthday and Christmas. The Japanese, on the other hand, givegifts quite fre quently, often to thank someone for their kindness. The tradition of gift-giving inJapan is very anc ient. There are many detailed rules for everything from the color of thewrapping paper to the tim e of the gift presentation. And while Europeans don't generallyexchange business gifts, they do fo llow some formal customs when visiting homes, such asbringing flowers. The type and color of flo wers, however, can carry special meaning.Today we have seen some broad differences in gift-giving. I could go on with additionalexamples. But let's not miss the main point here: If we are not aware of and sensitive to culturaldifferences, the possibilities for miscommunication and conflict are enormous. Whether we learnabout these differences by reading a book or by living abroad, our goal must be to respectdifferences among p eople in order to get along successfully with our global neighbors.Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.19. What does the speaker say about gift-giving of North Americans?20. What do we learn about the Japanese concerning gift-giving?21. What point does the speaker make at the end of the talk?Passage ThreeHetty Green was a very spoilt, only child. She was born in Massachusetts, USA, in 1835. Herfather was a millionaire businessman. She walked to theloc al grocery store to buy broken biscuits which were much cheaper, and to get a free bone forher m uch loved dog. Once she lost a two-cent stamp and spent the night looking for it. Shenever bough t clothes and always wore the same long, ragged black skirt. Worst of all, when herson Ned fell an d injured his knee, she refused to pay for a doctor and spent hours looking forfree medical help. He was telling her how much he loved her and how wonderful he thought she was. The more he wrote the more poetic he became. Finally he said that in order to be with her, he would suffer the greatest difficulties, he would face the greatest dangers that anyone couldn’t imagine. In fact, to spend only one minute with her, he would swim across the widest river, he would enter the deepest forest, and he would fight against the fiercest animals with his bare hands. He finished the letter, signed his name and then suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to mention something quite important. So, in a postscript below his name, he added:“By the way, I’ll be over to see you on Wednesday night, if it doesn’t rain.”13.A Kind NeighborMr. and Mrs. Jones’ apartment was full of l uggage, packages, furniture and boxes. Mrs. Jones invited her to come in and apologized bec ause there was no place for her to sit. “Oh, that’s OK.” said the lady. “I just come to welcome to your new home. As you know, in some parts of this city, neighbors are not friendly at all. They are some apartment houses where people don’t know any of thei r neighbors, not even the ones next door. But in this building, everyone is very friendly with everyone else. We are a big happy family. I am sure you will be very happy here.” Mr. and Mrs. Jones said, “But madam, we are not new dwellers in this apartment. We’ve lived here for two years. We are moving out tomorrow.”14.That Isn’t Our FaultMr. and Mrs. Williams got married when he was twenty-three, and she was twenty. She went inside and said angrily, “You took some photographs of me and my husband last week, but I’m not going to pay for them.”“Oh, why not?” the photographer asked.“Because my husband looks like a monkey,” Mrs. Williams said.“Well,” the photographer answered, “that isn’t our fault. Why didn’t you think of that before you married him?”15.A Guide’s AnswerIn 1861, the Civil War started in the United States between the Northern and the Southern states. The war continued with great bitterness until 1865, when the Northerners were victorious. However, even today, many Southerners have not forgotten their defeat, or forgiven the Northerners.A few years ago, a party of American tourists were going round one of the battlefields of the Civil War with a guide who came from one of the Southern states. At each place, the guide told the tourists stirring stories about how a few Southern soldiers had conquered powerful forces of Northerners there. At last, one of the tourists, a lady who came from the North, stopped the guide and said to him, “ But surely that the Northern army must have won at least one victory in the Civil War?”“Not as long as I’m the guide here, madam,” answered the Southern guide.16.A Qualified PilotThe captain of a small ship had to go along a rocky coast, but he was unfamiliar with it, so he tried to find a qualified pilot to guide him. The captain took him on board and asked him where to steer the ship. After half an hour, the captain began to suspect that the fisherman did not really know what he was doing and where he was going.“Are you sure you are a qualified pilot?” he asked.“Oh, yes,” answered the fisherman. “I know every rock on this part of the coast.”Suddenly there was a terrible crash from under the ship. At once the fisherman added, “And that’s one of them.”17.Living Things ReactYou and all organisms live an environment. An environment is made up of everything thatsurrounds an organism. It can include the air, the water, the soil, and even other organisms. An organism responds to changes in its environment. When an organism responds to a change, it reacts in certain ways. All living things respond in some way.Have you ever noticed how plants and insects respond to light? Plants bend toward light. Insects fly toward light.Living things also respond in other ways. The leaves on some trees respond to a change in season. In autumn, they change colors and then fall off the branches Animals also respond to a change in season. Squirrels save nuts for the winter. Bears sleep through the winter in a cave. You respond to your environment in many ways, too. You may shiver if you are cold. What other ways do you respond to changes in your environment?18.Flowering PlantsWhat are the parts of a flower?Flowers can have male parts and female parts. The female parts make eggs that become seeds. The male parts make pollen. Pollen is a powdery material that is needed by the eggs to make seeds. To make seeds, pollen and eggs must come together. The wind, insects, and birds bring pollen to eggs. Many animals love flowers’ bright colors. T hey also like a sugary liquid in flowers. This is called nectar. While they drink nectar, pollen rubs off on their bodies. As they move, some of this pollen gets delivered to the female flower parts.Over time, the female parts turn into fruits that contain seeds. Animals often eat the fruits and the seeds pass through their bodies as waste. The animals do no know they are working for the plants by planting seeds as they travel to different places!Useful words and Expressions:1. flowering 开花的2. pollen 花粉3. powdery 粉状的4. sugar 含糖的,甜的5. nectar花蜜,甘露6. rub 磨擦19.Finding the Direction and LocationHow can you tell which direction? By day, look for the Sun. It is in the east in the morning and the west in the afternoon. At night, use the Big Dipper to help you find the North Star. It would be better to bring a compass because its needle always points north. How do you know how far you have gone? You could count every step. Each step is about two feet. You’d better wear a pedometer which is a tool that coun ts steps. If you know where you started, which direction you are heading, and how far you have gone, you can use a good map to figure out exactly where you are.Today there is a new way for travelers to figure out where they are. It is the GPS. It has 24 satellites that orbit the earth and constantly broadcast their positions. Someday you may carry a small receiver as you hike and use GPS to find out if you are there yet!Useful Words and Expressions:1. dipper北斗七星2. compass 罗盘3. pedometer 步数计4. GPS= Global Position System全球定位系统5. orbit 轨道,绕……轨道而行6. receiver 接收器20.WavesHow does light get from the sun to the earth? How does music get from the stage to the audience? They move the same way-----in waves!Light and sound are forms of energy. All waves carry energy, but they may carry it differently. Light and sound travel through different kinds of matter. For example, light waves cannot move through walls, but sound waves can. That is why you can hear people talking in another room even though you cannot see them. The energy of some waves is destructive. An earthquake produces seismic waves.Catch a wave. Ask a friend to stand a few feet away from you. Stretch a spring between you. Shake the spring to transfer energy to it. What happens? The spring bounces up and down in waves. When the waves reach your friend, they bounce back to you!Light waves travel 300,000 kilometers (186,000 miles) per second! They can also travel through a vacuum. That is why light from the sun and distant stars can travel through space to the earth!Useful Words and Expressions;1. destructive 破坏的2. seismic地震的3. vacuum真空21.SoilsThere are many different kinds of soils. Different soils have different types of rock and minerals in them. Some soils have more water in them than others. Some soils might have more plant and animal material in them, too.Different kinds of soils are found in different parts of the world. There are several kinds of soils found in the United States. In some areas, the soil has a lot of clay. Other soils are very sandy. Loam is a kind of soil that has a good mixture of clay and sand.In some places, soil layers are very thick. Lots of plants grow in places with a thick soil layer. In dry and windy places soil layers are much thinner. Layers of soil on mountains are thin because gravity pulls the soil downhill. The type of soil in a particular place affects what kinds of plants can grow there.Useful Words:1. clay 黏土,泥土2. loam 肥土3. layer 层4. gravity 地心引力,重力5. downhill 往下。

Dr. Brown, you and your team have found bacteria far below the Earth'ssurface. You must be thrilled about your discovery.M: Well, yes, it's very exciting. For a long time we'd suspectedthe presence of such organisms, but we lacked substantial evidence. W: How did you confirm the existence of the bacteria?M: Well, technology helped. Our drilling techniques have improved significantly, and so the risk that surface bacteria could bemistaken for those found at much greater depth was reduced. With the new techniques, we could get much deeper into the Earth.W: How far down did you actually get?M:In one case, about three kilometers. We were surprised, I must tell you, that there were organisms that far down.W: You know, it sounds like fiction, something like a lost world.M:Let's call it a hidden biosphere, and it's probably a veryextensive one.The mass of the living organisms below the surface may be equal in size to the mass of the surface bacteria.W: Have you found any unique life-forms?M:Yes. We've found a very special organism. Let's call it Type-A bacterium. It can live and grow only where there is no oxygen.W: Is there any danger of these bacteria infecting people when you bring them to the surface?M: These bacteria were adapted to an environment that's completely different from humans'. That's to say, they could not survivein our environment. So we really don't need to worry about these bacteria causing illness in people.Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.1. What have Dr. Brown and his team discovered?2. What helps to confirm the existence of bacteria below the Earth'ssurface?3.How deep down did the man find the bacteria?4.Why does the man say there is no danger of infection by thebacteria brought to surface?Conversation TwoW:I haven't seen you here for a couple weeks. Have youstopped eating or something?M:No. Does it look like I've stopped eating? I've beenspending a lot of time in the library.W: Working on a paper?M:I wish I was working on a paper! I'm working on threedifferent papers:anthropology, English literature, and history.W: Wow, that is a lot of work.M: Yeah, and what's frustrating is that I'm studying the nineteenth century British Empire in all three classes, but I can't justwrite a single paper for all three.W: Why not?M:The professors won't let me even if I make it three timesas long as the suggested length.W:That's too bad. Could you write your papers on threeaspects of one topic?M: Hmm. What do you mean? Do you have something in mind?W: Well, let's see. Hmm...Maybe you could do something with Romanticism, like, oh... write your anthropology paper on thecultural basis of Romanticism, and, uh, your history paper onthe influence of the Romantic poets on British foreign policy, and, OK, and your English paper on an analysis of some Romantic poems.M: Hey, that's not a bad idea! I've already started the researchfor one of the papers, so I can use that. What can I do to repay you?W: You want to write up my chemistry paper for me?M:I'd love to, but I've never taken chemistry, so I'm not sureyou'd like the results.W:Oh well, no thanks necessary then. I'll do it myself. Have agood weekend, and try to get out of the library and get somesleep. You have big circles under your eyes.M: OK, I'll try. See you later.Questions 5 to 8 are based on the conversation you have just heard.5.What has the man been busy doing recently?6.What does the woman suggest the man do to make his work easier?7.Why does the woman mention Romanticism?8.Why doesn't the man want to help the woman?Section BDirections: In this section, you will hear two the end of eachpassage, you will hear some the passage and the questions willbe spoken only you hear a question, you must choose the bestanswerfrom the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1with a single line throughthe centre.Passage OneI hope you have all finished reading the assigned chapter oninsurance-so that you're prepared for our discussion today. But,before we start,I'd like to mention a few things your text doesn't go into. It's interesting to note that insurance has existed in some form for a very long time. The earliest insurance policies providedshipping protection for merchants as far back as 3000 B. C.In general, the contracts were often no more than verbal agreements. They granted loans to merchants with the understanding that if a particular shipment of goods was lost at sea, the loandidn't have to be repaid. Interest on the loans varied accordingto how risky it was to transport the goods. During periods of heavy piracy at sea, for example, the amount of interest and the costof the policy went up considerably. So, you can see how insurancehelped encourage international trade. Even the most cautious merchants became willing to risk shipping their goods over longdistances-not to mention in hazardous weather conditions-when they had this kind of protection available.Generally speaking, the basic form of an insurance policy hasbeen pretty much the same since the Middle Ages. There are fourpoints that were prominent then and remain dominant in all policies today. These were outlined in chapter six and will serve asthe basis for the rest of today's discussion.Questions 9 to 11 are based on the passage you have just heard.9.Who were the first insurance contracts designed to protect?10.What determined the interest on the loans?11.What does the speaker say about current insurance policies?Passage TwoMilk was a basic food of man long before history was written. It will probably keep on being one as long as there are animalsthat give milk. Many ancient people thought that milk had great healing power. One of the most famous Greek doctors told his patients to drinkmilk to cure illness. For more than two hundred years most people got their milk from their own cattle or from a nearby dairy herd. But in time newinventions made the dairy industry a big business. In 1851 GailBorden, founder of a milk company, found a way to take some of thewater out of milk. This made it keep much longer. Four years later,Louis Pasteur introduced the pasteurization process. This process killed the bacteria in milk that caused it to spoil. Next, a special milk bottle was designed. This was followed by the invention ofmachines that could fill bottles and cap them automatically. These discoveries had a great effect on the dairy industry. They meantthat milk could be stored longer. It could be safely shipped overlong distances. Preparing and distributing milk soon became a large-scale business. Recently, in a single year more than sixtybillion quarts of milk were sold in the United States. Some people believe that milk drinking will become less popular in America than it has been. But remember how long milk has beena basic food and think of the many ways in which it is useful. It seemed, at that time,to be a sea of paradise, but now we know that we are facing paradise lost.I want to share with you my personal view of changes in the seathat affect all of us, and to consider why it matters that in 50years, we've lost---actually, we've taken, we've eaten---more than 90 percent of the big fish in the sea; why you should care thatnearly half of the coral reefs have disappeared; why a reductionof oxygen in large areas of the Pacific should concern not onlythe creatures that are dying, but it really should concern you.It does concern you, as well. There was still time. Well, now is that time. I hope for yourhelp to explore and protect the wild ocean in ways that will restore the health and, in so doing, secure hope for humankind. Health tothe ocean means health for us.For me, as a scientist, it all began in 1953when I first triedunderwater breathing device. It's when I first got to know how fish swimming in mysterious ocean. I actually love diving at night; you see a lot of fish then that you don't see in the daytime. Sincethen, I've started designing and building 13 underwater systemsto access the deep sea. I led a five-year National Geographicexpedition, the Sustainable Seas expeditions, using these littlesubmarines. They're so simple to drive that even a scientist cando it. And I'm living proof.Over time, most of the planet's organic carbon has been absorbed and stored there. The ocean drives climate and weather, stabilizes temperature, shapes Earth's chemistry. Water from the sea provides home for about 97 percent of life in the world, maybe in the universe. No water, no life; no blue, no green.A global plan of action with a world conservation union isunderway to protect biodiversity, to recover from the impacts ofclimate change. New technologies are needed to map, photograph and explore the 95 percent of the ocean that we have yet to see. I wish you would use all means at your disposal---films, expeditions, the web, new submarines---and campaign to arouse public support fora global network of marine protected areas---hope spots large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet.16.What was beyond imagination when the speaker began toexplore the ocean 50 years ago?17. What should we worry about in the Pacific except for the dying creatures?18.How long has the National Geographic expedition led by thespeaker lasted?19.What is the purpose for the global plan of action? Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 20to 22.Financially speaking, makeup can be a burden. By one estimate,a woman in the US will spend an average of $15,000 on makeup inher lifetime. The fact is that the ingredients in these productsoften account for no more than 15% of the cost, according to Randy Schueller, a cosmetic chemist who has been in the beauty businessfor more than 30 years. What people are mainly paying for is marketing, packaging, andbrands. That's why lipstick, for example, which is mostly wax, oil, and pigments, routinely costs more than $20 a tube at a department store makeup counter.Schueller says that, because ingredients are such a small share of the cost, "price does not really relate to quality when it comes to cosmetic products."In fact, packaging has become such a focus in the industry that there are actually awards given out for it.Where the makeup is sold matters, too. It's a form of marketing in itself, which is evident when you consider the difference between upscale brands carried at retailers such as Sephora andUlta and mass-market brands sold at drugstores.Karen Grant, the global beauty industry analyst at research firm NPD, says they're two different models, and consumers pay for that difference. At higher-end stores, you "pay for the display areasand the people who are helping to sell the product, whereas in amass environment it can be sealed up behind a package and sit ona shelf," she says. High-end shops also often make tester itemsavailable, and may accept returns even on used items. It simplycosts a retailer more to be profitable in that environment, andthose costs are factored into the price tags on the products. There's evidence that consumers are buying into famous brandsat increasing rates. Sales in the global cosmetics market arerising-to $ billion last year, according to Euromonitor and areexpected to keep growing. But it's not because the price of makeup is getting more expensive. In fact, it hasn't.What should a consumer do? Know what you're looking for. If you want a lipstick that will last, then go with one designed for that. But don't assume that more expensive means better. More than anything else, what the price of makeup simply reflects is the price that you're willing to pay for it.20. What do we learn about Randy Schueller according to the speaker?21. What is Randy Schueller's conclusion about ingredients as asmall share of the cost?22.What is the evident of more and more consumers buyinginto famous brands? Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 23to 25.Mountain of Light, one of the world's best-known diamonds, ison the Queen Elizabeth's crown. But the Indians want it back. Agroup of Indian stars and businessmen has united to instruct lawyers to begin legal proceedings in London's High Court to return the Mountain of Light diamond. The group says that the 105-caratdiamond worth a reported £ 100m was stolen from its true home inIndia and they are demanding that the UK Government returns it.The diamond was in the crown worn by the Queen Elizabeth at her crowning ceremony in 1953.Bollywood star Bhumicka Singh, also part of the group, said:"The Mountain of Light is not just a 105-carat stone, but part ofour history and culture and should undoubtedly be returned."British Lawyers instructed by the "Mountain of Light" group toreturn the stone, said they would base their case on the Returnof Cultural Objects Act, which gives national institutions in theUK the power to return stolen art.Satish Jakhu, of Birmingham-based law firm Rubric Lois King, said they would make their claim under the common law doctrine of "trespass to goods", arguing that the government had stolen thediamond. He added that they would be taking their case to theInternational Court of Justice.Historian Andrew Roberts told the Mail on Sunday:"Those involved in this ridiculous case should recognize that the British Crown Jewels is precisely the right place for the Mountain of Light diamond to reside, in grateful recognition for over t hree centuries of British involvement in India, which led to the modernization, development, protection, agrarian advance, linguistic unification and ultimately the democratization of the sub-continent."According to legend, the gem can only be worn by God or women, and whoever wears the jewel will become extremely powerful, but if a man wears it, he will meet an unfortunate end.The UK Government has so far rejected the claims.23.What do the Indian stars and businessmen want to do?24.What is the use of the Return of Cultural Objects Act?25.What will a man become if he wears the diamond according tothe legend?。
