The Turn of the Screw
This is a ghost story written by a former governess who is now dead. She is hired by a man who’s responsible for taking care of both of his nephew and niece.Since the two children’s grandparents who were raising them after the death of their father died. The man lives mainly in London and is not interested in raising the children himself at all.
The governess’s employer—the uncle of the children gives her the full charge of them and tells her never disturbs him except something too hard to handle. So she travels long way to the man’s country house and started her duties. She knows that there is a boy named Miles attending a boarding school and a girl named Flora living at an estate in Essex. The girl is being cared for by the housekeeper—Mrs. Grose. However,Miles soon returns from his school for the summer after a letter posted from the headmaster stating that he has been expelled.Staying at home,Miles never speaks of anything related to this matter, the governess is also hesitant to talk about it.She is afraid of the secret behind his expulsion but in another way,so curious about it. After a period, she has discovered that there are always two figures coming around the estate whom she can not recognize. They goes around the house at any time randomly without being seen by other members of the house. Then she learned from the housekeeper Mrs.Grose that they’re her predecessors—Miss. Jessel, and another employee—Peter Quint, the two of them had sexual relationship with each other and both died. Before that, they spent much of their time with Miles and Flora. And this convinces the governess that not only she knows the presence of the two ghosts, but also the two children.
A few days later, when Miles plays piano for the governess,Flora leaves the estate to go to the wood. The governess and Mrs. Grose notice that she has been talking to Miss Jessel—one of the ghosts. But after they inquired her several times, she denies she have seen her and talked to her.In reverse, she swears never to see the governess once more. Thus, the housekeeper takes Flora to his uncle and leaves her brother at the house.Just on that night, while they are talking about the reason Miles being expelled from school,Peter Quint—the other ghost, appears at the window. She protects Miles who attempts to see the ghostand tells him that he’s no longer in control of the ghost.but then finds Miles has died in her arms.
The novel was written by Henry James and this was a sort of Gothic fiction. His novel is mainly of ghost genre and this one makes a man telling his friend that he knows the governess, that is to say,the novel is a first-person telling one.James always prefers to create an environment filled with horrible atmosphere.Such as the two ghosts mentioned in the fiction fly randomly above the lonely astate. And let the two little children notice them, let the governess explore all of this,in order to guide us the reader to observe all of them too. This kind of first-person narrating pattern is really a great one.。
