These days there are no real rules for a western wedding; even religious ceremonies can be held at a couple's venue of choice, or outdoors. Many people like to stick to traditional ways though, so here are some aspects of a Western wedding. The ceremony This is often held in a religious building such as a church, chapel, synagogue or mosque. If the wedding is a civil ceremony, the Registry Office of the local government offices becomes the venue. In church, the friends and family of the bride sit on one side of the aisle, and those of the groom on the other. The bride arrives last, and the Groom and the best man wait for her at the end of the aisle, near the altar. The bride is 'given away' by her father, a custom with roots in the idea of women being men's property! During the ceremony, the couple exchange marriage vows and gold rings, guarded until this moment by the best man, and the broom is given permission by the person marrying them to kiss the bride. As they leave the church, their guests throw rice or paper confetti and may tie old shoes and lucky horseshoes to the back of their car, which is also decorated. They drive to the wedding reception in a hotel, pub or garden, or at home. The white dress and trimmingsBridal gowns of ancient times were brightly colored to signify joy, but many brides wear white, supposedly to represent purity or virginity. In fact, Queen Victoria is commonly credited withbeing the first bride to wear white as a sign of wealth. Long ago the bridegroom would cover hisbride's head, to conceal her identity if he had capture her, or as protection from evil spirits, resultin g in the bridal veil, usually made of net or lace. Brides may also wear a garte r,originally intended to keep her stockings up, and carry a bouquet of flower s. These last aregiven away after the ceremony; the garter is torn off and gi ven to a lucky bachelor, or evenauctioned, while the bouquet is thrown by th e bride to her single female friends: the personwho catches it will marry next. These traditions actually have roots in England when guestswould tear at the bride's clothing and flowers to share in her happiness. While fleeing from her attackers, the bride would toss her bouquet into the mob to placate them. The wedding cakeTraditionally in England, wheat cakes were broken over the bride's head to br ing good luck and fertility. During the reign of King Charles II of England, a b aker stacked these cakes andfrosted them, creating the wedding cake we kno w today. The bride and groom kiss over theirtall cake for luck and then cut th e first piece together. Feeding cake to each other is a symbol of how they will always trust and provide for each other, and feed and nourish their relationshi p.The honeymoon Backwhen a bride married by capture and not by choice, the groom would take h er away followingthe wedding, and keep her in hiding for a full cycle of the moon (28 days). During this time, they would drink a fermented honey beverage called mead to ease inhibitions, in the hope thatby the time the bride's family found her, she would be pregnant, hence the term honeymoon.Hopefully these days, most couples look forward to a romantic holiday to get to know eachother better ... and to get over the stress of the wedding!conceal[kən'si:l]vt. 传统的intended[in'tendid]adj. 已订婚者v.in内+tend伸展+ed→故意的;打算中的exchange[iks'tʃeindʒ]n. 交换,兑换,交guarded['gɑ:did]adj.

Some couples fly off Las Vegas to tie the knot.
例如“我要娶她”就是I will marry her. 。
那么“结了婚”就可以够说We were married 或是We got married.
I've decided to make a big commitment to him.
”婚礼前通常宾客会将礼金即喜钱(gift of money to the couple)送给新郎新娘,而婚礼仪式(wedding ceremony)中最重要的部份则是互换成婚戒指(a wedding band),仪式结束后便开始婚宴(Wedding dinner, a wedding reception)。
I,Ross, take thee Rachel to be my wedded wife,to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer,in sickness and in health,to love andto cherish, till death do us part.
Well, I've been to countless wedding ceremonies so far, but the most memorable one ismy cousin's wedding, which is not a traditional one that is held in a restaurant or a church, buton a secluded beach in Bali. It was actually a destination wedding and only close friends andfamily members were invited. The wedding celebrations went like a dream, I mean, the azuresky, the crystal clear water, the soothing sound of the waves, the soft sand, everything! Andthe reception was sweetas well. I can see that the wedding planner must have put alot ofthoughts in it. The bride looked gorgeous in that fancy wedding dress, and my cousin wasdrop-dead handsome, so you see, that wedding was picture-perfect! And my uncle was veryoriginal when he made his speech. He didn't say that I wish you a happy marriage or youshould start a family soon, like other parents would do. Instead, he shared his opinion onmarriage, and I quote: Life is a long a bumpy journey, and you guys should hold each other'shands and get through this together. Marriage is not a fairy tale. There will be imperfections. Atsome point in your life, you might have afight or disagreement, but you must never stoploving eachother and tolerate each other. There was soft backgroundmusic while he wasdoing this, which made it incredibly touching, I could see tears welling up in the couple's eyes. So, I guess it's fair to say that wedding is the bestone I've ever been to, and I hope someday, I could have one just like that. I was told that a girl in a wedding dress was the most gorgeous, and that's true. I've neverseen my sister asbeautiful as she was that day. My father gave her away to my brother-in-law,and they exchanged vows and wedding rings, just like what I'd seen in romantic movies. Mymom was movedto tears, and I believe that was a mixed feeling for her, but mostly happytears. And the reception was unique as well. It was an all-you-can-eat buffet. I think it was agood way for people to mingle. During the dinner, my brother-in-law proposed a toast and gavea speech. I can't remember exactly what he said, but the general idea was how lucky it was tomeet my sister and haveher as his wife. He has a great sense of humor, so although what hesaid was really touching, he managed to make everybody laugh. I was so happy for my sister. The memory is so fresh as if it happened yesterday.。
Wedding1. Have you ever been to a wedding celebration?I’ve only been to one wedding in my life, and I was very young so I can’t remember it very well. It’s for my Uncle Nicholas and Auntie Nina, who were finally tying the knot after dating for nine whole years. I doubt either of them had cold feet seeing as they had already been together for so long.I remember having to get dressed into some very formal and uncomfortable clothes. They itched a lot and I felt very trussed-up. I also had to kiss all the bridesmaids which was horrible for a young boy as I was then. Afterwards there was a big party called a ‘reception’ where everyone ate a nice meal, gave speeches and drank a lot of wine.2. What happens at a wedding celebration in China? In the traditional Chinese wedding, a band of musicians with gongs and flute-like instruments accompanies the bride parade to groom's home. Similar music is also played at the wedding banquet. Depending on the region that the bride hails from, Chinese weddings will have different traditions such as Tea Ceremony or the use of a Wedding emcee. When the bride arrived at the groom’s house, she can’t walk out of the sedan chair; the old matchmaker lady has to piggyback her all the way to the living room. And drop her there in front of the groom’s parents, and the whole wedding she has the red clothes covered her head, the couple will have three kowtow, to the earth and sky, to the parents, and to each other. And the red color is being used a lot, as a symbol of good luck, but in modern times, Chinese couples get to know western weddings via media, so the lady sometimes dressing up in white, and they go to church to have the wedding and also will often go to photo studios to take "glamour shots" posing in multiple gowns and various backgrounds.3. Why do many people spend a lot of money on wedding celebrations?I think the main reason people tend to push the boat out for their weddings is that it’s a unique event that will only happen once in their lives. They want to make it special and something to remember. Another factor at work here is the desire to impress all your friends and relatives who will come to the wedding. Not only do you want them to have fun and enjoy the occasion but you also want to show-off a bit. It’s not unusual for some couples to spend ridiculous amounts of money on weddings. There’s a lot of pressure and expectation that a wedding has to be ‘perfect’ so people tend to splash out and spend a lot of money.4. Do you know of any differences between weddings in China and those in the West? For western couples, during the wedding the bride walks into the church herself, which is called the bridal march. But during the traditional Chinese wedding the bride doesn’t walk herself. Instead a matchmaker lady has to piggyback her to the living room. Also, in western weddings, people always dress up in white, as a symbol of purity, but in a Chinese wedding the bride dresses up in red as a symbol of good luck. During the western wedding, the groom uncover the face mask by his hands and kisses the bride in front the guests, whereas in a traditional Chinese wedding the groom will carry the bride to their room and then uncover her face mask using a long red stick. As you can see, there are quite a few differences between the two types of wedding.。

The bridegroom, together with some of his relatives and friends, has to pick up the bride and her family from her home with beautifully decorated cars. Then the families and friends will usually have a banquet together. It is widely believed as the most meaningful moment in one’s life.Q3. How has people’s attitude towards wedding ceremonies changed in China? I think people have really changed their attitude towards wedding ceremonies. As time goes on, people have paid so much attention to how the wedding can be presented. But 30 years ago, even 10 years ago, people would like to have a simple wedding so that they could save the money for future family expenditure. Another possible reason that I can think of is that a criminal may which to change his name for illegal reasons.Q7. Do you prefer a big family or a small one? Why? I prefer to have a small family, the so-called nuclear family. For one thing, it’s the state policy that one couple should only have one child, no more. For another, the working pressure makes it difficult to bring up more children.I prefer to have a big family. Firstly, I like children a lot. I believe my child is the continuation of my life, as well as the crystal of our love. Moreover, with more children, I feel that I treat my family more seriously knowing that I have someone to care for, or a sacred responsibility to take.Q8. How has family structure changed in the recent decades in China? Well, family structure in China has changed a lot, generally from big to small. But as time goes on and people need to move with jobs, combined with the influences of one-child policy, small families are more common in today’s society.Q9.
1. Are you married, and if so when did you get married?Yes, I am married. I got married about three years ago. I have a good husband / wife, and we are very happy together. To put it in another way you could say that we are best friends. We do not keep any secrets from one another. We had known each other for many years before we got married, so we did not have to adjust too much. For instance, I knew before marriage that he snores loudly when he turns onto his back when sleeping, but I didn’t mind.2. Do you have any children? No, I don’t have any children yet. We are planning to start with a family as soon as we have our own apartment. Until then my husband / wife and I are working as hard as possible to improve our life. We would both like to have a son and a daughter, but because of the one-child policy that will not be possible.3. What is your child’s name? Does it have any meaning? My child’s name is Li Ao S heng. He was born on the day that Macao became part of China again. That’s why he got the name. His nickname is Bao Bao, as we believe that he is going to become a strong man one day.4. What does your wife do?My wife is a housewife at the moment. We are looking for a job for her, but it is not easy, as she does not have any qualifications or experience. A new supermarket will be opened in our area soon, and we hope that she will be able to find a job there. She has placed her name on a waiting list, and we will be hearing from the employment officer soon.5. What does your husband do?My husband is a civil servant. He works for the Department of Health at a hospital near our home. He is responsible for keeping the patient records in the men’s wards. He loves his work, and is receiving a good salary, so we don’t have any serious worries. As a matter of fact we both agree that we have a lot to be thankful for.6. Did you have a honeymoon, and if so where did you go?Yes, We did have a honeymoon. We went to Dalian for a week, and stayed in a small hotel next to the beach. I will never forget the time we spent there. For example, it was very romantic, as we could sit on the beach in the evenings and watch the moon rising over the sea.7. Did you and your spouse have to ask permission from your parents before you could get married? No, not really. They knew we were going to get married. We only had to confirm the date with them to ensure that it would suit them and our families. In earlier times is was customary for the young man to get the permission from his girlfriend’s parents before they could get married.8. Is living together without getting married acceptable in China? These days the practice is becoming more and more acceptable to society. What I mean to say is that it all depends on the couple now. Young people feel that they first want to know each other even better by living together. When they are absolutely sure that they are able to adapt to each other’s lifestyles, they would then most probably decide to get married.9. Do you think couples should live with their parent or on their own?Definitely the latter. There are several reasons as for why I think couples should life on their own. Allow me to explain by mentioning some of them briefly. First, I believe couples should become independent as soon as possible. They should learn how to cope with the money at their disposal. Also, they should be alone as soon as possible. Generation gap can be the trigger for many quarrels between the young and old generations.10. What responsibilities should a couple take? There are several responsibilities that couples should take. In the first place, I believe they should be responsible for their own finances. Young couples usually do not have a lot of money. They should try to find ways to make ends meet. In the second place, they have to look after their child if they have one. They have to feed the kid and ensure that he/she gets a good education.。

But today I would like to say something about my cousins wedding, which roughly happened 5 months ago. I went there with my family, definitely. Specifically, Chinese weddings are quite different from western ones. For western countries, they normally hold a wedding in a church, but for Chinese, we always have it in a fancy hotel or a luxury restaurant, and so its the same with my cousins wedding. Before the ceremony, the groom picked up the bride, my cousin, with a motorcade and then they took some photos in open areas, just on a square of my city. My cousin wasextremely beautiful and she was in a pure white wedding dress. And then, they went to the hotel, where they had the wedding reception. The venue was nicely decorated, and there was a flood of people, perhaps 200. To be honest, the reception was very ceremonious. Firstly, the officiator gave a very brief speech, after that, the new couple exchanged their rings, took vows, and followed by a toast from the guests to the bride and groom. Undoubtedly, everyone there was in high spirits, chatting and laughing all day long. The couple, obviously loved each other so much. They even couldnt take their eyes off each other during the whole evening. It was a wonderful wedding as Ive witnessed my cousins important day. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience for her.3 4雅思口语invention话题Describe an important invention (before the age of computers) that has influenced human society.***You should say:what the invention iswhen and where it was inventedhow it is usedand explain how this invention has influenced society.

What do people usually wear in the wedding?…
