TPO 16 Trade and the Ancient Middle East,
Passage 2Title: Formation of Solar System
Passage 3Title: The Diversity of Species

Question 1-9:Overland transport in the United States was still extremely primitive in 1790. Roads were few and short, usually extending from inland communities to the nearest river town or seaport. Nearly all interstate commerce was carried out by sailing ships that served the bays and harbors of the seaboard. Yet, in 1790 the nation was on the threshold of a new era of road development. Unable to finance road construction, states turned for help to private companies, organized by merchants and land speculators who had a personal interest in improved communications with the interior. The pioneer in this move was the state of Pennsylvania, which chartered a company in 1792 to construct a turnpike, a road for the use of which a toll, or payment, is collected, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. The legislature gave the company the authority to erect tollgates at points along the road where payment would be collected, though it carefully regulated the rates. (The states had unquestioned authority to regulate private business in this period.)The company built a gravel road within two years, and the success of the Lancaster Pike encouraged imitation.

Others believe that it is better for children to study at school. Which view do you agree with? For schools with an emphasis in arts and humanities, funding field trips, goes a along way towards helping their students broaden their horizons since most of the students majored in these subjects are looking for an experience beyond academic studies, one that allows them to have fun and network. Nevertheless, for engineering schools, funding field trips in the hope of providing the students with better education could be an exercise in futility, because their student body is mostly composed of reserved, socially-awkward individuals, for whom academic studies take precedence over field trips; these schools are better off funding research projects and updating outdated science labs.
Navigation Acts were a series of laws that restricted the use of foreign ships for trade between Britain and its colonies. They began in 1651 and ended 200 years later. They reflected the policy of mercantilism, which sought to keep all the benefits of trade inside the Empire, and minimize the loss of gold and silver to foreigners. They prohibited the colonies from trading directly with the Netherlands, Spain, France, and their colonies. The original ordinance of 1651 was renewed at the Restoration by Acts of 1662, 1663, 1670, and 1673 subsequently subject to minor amendment. These Acts formed the basis for British overseas trade for nearly 200 years. Another way to define this is laws created by England to limit their colonies' trade with other countries. On the whole, the Acts of Trade and Navigation were obeyed, except for the Molasses Act of 1733, which led to extensive smuggling because no effective means of enforcement was provided until the 1750s. Irritation because of stricter enforcement under the Sugar Act of 1764 became one source of resentment by merchants in the American colonies against Great Britain. This in turn helped push the colonies to start the American Revolution. The major impetuses for the Navigation Acts were the ruinous deterioration of English trade in the aftermath of the Eighty Years' War, and the concomitant lifting of the Spanish trade-embargoes on trade between the Spanish Empire and the Dutch Republic. The end of the embargoes in 1647 unleashed the full power of the Amsterdam Entrepôt and other Dutch competitive advantagesin world trade. Within a few years, English merchants hadpractically been overwhelmed in the trade on the IberianPeninsula, the Mediterranean and the Levant. Even the tradewith English colonies (partly still in the hands of the royalists, asthe English Civil War was in its final stages and theCommonwealth of England had not yet imposed its authoritythroughout the English colonies) was "engrossed" by Dutchmerchants.
