Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice is based on Jane Austen’s novel about five sisters in Britain in the 18th century. The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who buried herself in marrying off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a mature girl who always has her own thought. Mary likes reading classic books. Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follows her sister Lydia. Lydia is immature girl who always follows fresh things and handsome man.
As far as I’m concerned, this book is not a simple love story, but a representation of the society at that time. The five Bennet sisters have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a wealthy husband. The author perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave people in her works vivid characters. In first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads:"It is a truth well known to all the world that unmarried man is possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife"It implied that the marriage at that time is for possession but not love. In fact, the marriage in her book is not
the product of love, but the product of economic needs. Reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a wealthy husband at that time.
In modern society, marry for money is still a big problem. Many parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. I can’t help thinking: can money determine everything? Definitely not. In my mind, marriage is a holy thing that should be the product of love not anything else. We should have the ability to identify what is true love and have the courage to pursue our own happiness, to fight for love, to marry for love.。
