My Impressions of the Disastrous FilmsI.IntroductionThe Day after Tomorrow and 2012 are the science fiction films, involving the advanced digital video effects and many horrible and disastrous scenes to demonstrate the power of the nature and to make p eople worry about the future of environment and human beings’ existence and habitat. Indeed, the plots of these two movies are similar to each other. The Day after Tomorrow mainly tells us that Jack Hall, who is the climatologist, predicts that global warming will lead to a new ice age and he issues a warning at a New Delhi conference, hoping the American vice-president can take measures to deal with it. However, the vice-president refuses to listen to Jack and he doesn’t believe that prediction will come t rue. Before long, some abnormal phenomena happen in man cities. Actually, the scary disaster comes much faster than Jack has imagined before. Afterwards, tornados, floods, the snow, and the hailstones attack many cities. Then the president starts to pay at tention to Jack’ suggestion and decides to evacuate residents of the north so as to save people as soon as possible. At the center of the story, Jack tries to save the world from the effects of global warming while he promises to save his son, Sam, who is trapped in New York. Finally, Jack succeeds in rescuing his son through many difficulties. In 2012, the main character, Jackson, a writer in Los Angeles, who works as a driver for the Russian billionaire Yuri, accidentally finds the big secret that the heads of government officials choose 400000 people to get on gigantic arks in order to ensure the continuity of human life when the world ends. So Jackson rents a private plane, and escapes from the disaster of destruction with his ex-wife, his son, daughter and his x-wife’ boyfriend, Gordon. The center of plot mainly tells us the process of his adventurous journey to get on gigantic ark. Eventually, a small percentage of humans survive from the disaster. Generally, these two movies show us the unusual trips and feasts for eyes and ears, which make us experience some moving scenes and learn some meaningful things.II.we can experience the warmth of the brilliant humanity of people from these two films.2.1 The brilliance of the deeply love.Love is the film’s p rinciple and eternal theme, so do these two disastrous movies. Although these two films show us the terrifying scenes during the disaster, we still see the earnest and deeply love anywhere, such as the love between parents and kids, the love between the lovers, the love between the doctor and the little cancer patient, the love between dogs and the love between the strangers. These beautiful loves fill in the films and make us deeply touched. In these two films, what impresses me is the love between Jack and his son, Sam, and the love between Jackson and his kids, Noah and Lilly. Jack and Jackson are busy in working and have no time in accompanying with their sons, so Sam and Noah misunderstand that their father don’t care about them. Actually, their fathers really love them all the time. When Sam istrapped in New York, Jack determines to go from Washington D.C. to New York to rescue Sam through the ice sheets. In 2012 when the disaster happens, Jackson tries his best to save his son and daughter; when Jackson frees the drill and its cable from the closing mechanism, Noah works together with his father because he is afraid that he will never see his father again. Love between the fathers and kids are always impressed and valuable, if people touch it in heat of hearts.Sincerely, love is the greatest gift on the earth and it shows in any form and in any occasions.Love makes people great and powerful especially in the terrible situation. Because of love, people can work together to fight against the disaster. Besides, there are many moving sights which are full of love. For example, Frank chooses to die in order to save his teammates from death; the beggar gives his last sausage to his beloved dog; Laura tries his best to help the French woman and her children; Nima, a Buddhist monk helps Jackson’s family to get on ark; the American geologist Adrian convince other G8 leaders to let the remaining people on board. Altogether, these warm sights just show the brilliance of humanity, the beautiful love.2.2 The significance of the valuable bravery.Bravery is one of the most beautiful brilliance of humanity in the film. In these two films, most people keep brave to struggle against the disaster. The reporters are bold in reporting immediate news and message about the weather and environment. Doctor, Lucy is the only one person who has enough encourage to stay with the little cancer patient to wait the ambulance when others leave the hospital. The three scientists, who are trapped in the snow area, have nothing to choose, but to wait for death. Honestly, they are so brave and calm to confront of the disaster. Because of braver, they can face the disaster and deal with the situation calmly and optimistically. Due to the bravery, they devote themselves to their jobs with the heart and soul. Thanks to bravery, we can see many people stand fast at their posts. Therefore, bravery is one of the important key to overcoming the difficulties, conquering natural disaster and surviving. Without it, lives are lost, and dreams are destroyed. I think without bravery, people are easy to damage.2.3 The generousness of the great sacrifice.With the heavy heart, I find the brilliance of humanity, sacrifice, which always makes me shed tears. In the films, we can see many scientists sacrifice their personal interests so as to save the humans from the death; many daring rescuing teams make efforts to rescue others at the risk of their lives. Especially, the president in 2012 declines to get on ark but stays along with his people, making me moved deeply. What surprise me is that Yuri, who is a mean and selfish man, sacrifices his life to get his sons on board at last. Even if the disaster is terrible, and many people are eager to survive, there still are many people sacrificing their lives to save others in that they are great and disinterested in most cases.III.we can draw some important and profound lessons from these two films.3.1To value what we have possessed.After experiencing the disaster and surviving finally, the main characters in these twofilms both learn that value is very significant. At fist, they regard their jobs as the priorities, so that they don’t have enough time to stay with their family and express their love to those who they really care about. As the disaster happens, they just find out what is most important to them. When the death is coming, they just find that family is significant and they just regret not spend time on their family, their friends and their relatives. Unfortunately, the main heroes survive eventually, and they are reconciled with their family through the experiencing the disaster. It is obvious that people should better possess what they have at present, or we may have no opportunities in the future. Most people always fail to value something they have, but they often regret not to value before. They always understand the meaning of value when they lose something. So just spare some time to value some people who are important in your life and value the present as soon as possible.3.2 To revere the nature and protect the environment.The Day after Tomorrow and 2012 delivering the environmental message, which making people take seriously to revere the nature and protect the environment. In reality, we human always believe that we are the most senior creatures who can dominate the nature. We think we are so wise and powerful that we can deliberately and recklessly demand what we want from the nature and destroy the nature and environment as we please. Gradually, human being tries their best take advantage of any resources on the earth, and we human beings are only concentrated on the development of economy at any cost, but ignore to care about our nature and our environment. As a result, our environment is worse and worse, which threatens our habitat. Anywa y, the nature is powerful, and the environment is very fragile, so we’d better revere and protect the environment. Otherwise, we will be punished by the nature the day after tomorrow and suffer a lot in the future.Ⅳ.ConclusionThe Day after Tomorrow and 2012 are the same types of the disastrous films, in general. Personally, I like The Day after Tomorrow better. In The Day after Tomorrow, the disaster results from that people excessively exploit the natural resources on the earth, which destroys the ecological balance of the earth. Just as the vice-president say th at“we are wrong, I am wrong. We are wrong to treat the environment badly.” So the reason of the disaster and the president’s word are good for people to reflect and think deeply about the nature’s power and the environmental protection. While in 2012,the disaster happens because of solar flare bombardment the Earth's core begins heating up at an unprecedented rate, eventually causing crustal displacement. Seemingly, people are just the victims of disaster. So people hardly repent their errors and they cannot aware of the consciousness of environmental protection. What’s more, comparing these two movies, I am totally affected by the The Day after Tomorrow due to its deeply and strong emotions, and I am satisfied with its ending. While, I don’t agree the result of 2012, in which only some rich people and scientists and government officials survive. In fact, many people have no any opportunities to know the fact that the big disaster will comes because everything was kept by government around the world from theordinary people. As far as I am concerned, all people have right to survive, whether they are rich or not. After all, everyone is equal and important. Generally speaking, I can benefit something meaningful and helpful from these two films.。

2012 Doomsday 2012 世界末日This is one of those "Christian-based" films with a fair amount of preaching, so be forewarned. This is the basic fault that I found with this film. Instead of telling a story and letting the viewer make his or her own decision, it's always being shoved in peoples' faces. I do not have anything against people of any religious persuasion, until they start preaching. This is the problem of people who think they are following Christ's example. Christians today, especially in America, do not follow Christ's teachings, or at least they may think that they do, but most only end up sounding very ignorant and unable to reason. Most become intolerant of everybody else unless it's Christian and start to see "demons" behind every door. This isn't spirituality, this is madness. What I find strange as well, is that so many Christian films feel that they must keep up with secular films by putting in lots of violence in their films. Aren't American Christiansable to watch a film that isn't steeped in violence, and if not, why? A question to think about. I would think that following the teachings of a man like Christ would eventually change one's nature somewhat. These are a few problems that infiltrates Christian-based films. I noted as well, a lot of "Colonial" themes going on in this film. The untrue notion about non-native peoples having been to Mexico before Columbus is an atrocious colonial/imperialistic mindset that white supremacists also would like to believe is true, as well as the fact that all of the caucasian people in the film save the pregnant Mexican woman. (I'm not sure if she was supposed to be indigenous, she didn't appear Native American in the least.) Again, more colonial thought: the Europeans must save the lost indigenous peoples. This is something akin to the themes of Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. The white guy always has to save the "savages," nevermind that in anthropological classifications, Indians (from India) are basically caucasoid. It's all about skin colour, still, to this day. And of course, the "savages" have no true God. They must know the one, true God. Personally, the movie wasn't all that bad as a whole, but allof what I mentioned is offensive, especially since I have relatives who are not only 100% Native American (Cree Indians), but close relatives who are mixed with Native American as well. Most have had their lives destroyed or damaged by religion. My mother-in-law's family was torn apart and taken away by Catholic missionaries when she was younger. This is just one example. If anything, if so-called Christians want to improve the world, make a film about what we should do to stop global warming; how to be better neighbours to one another; how to end war; how to be more peaceful and loving; how to treat all living things with care and respect. Many other spiritual paths teach this, Hinduism for example. Jesus Christ wouldn't want Christians to focus on so much violent death and destruction if he were here, he would want us to focus on life, joy, and peace. After all, he claimed to die for our sins and that we should be living examples of Christ, no? I would recommend to all Christian filmmakers to stop focusing so much on death and destruction as a means to an end. All the bloodshed and violence just isn't worth whatever strange visions or endings they may believethey may have waiting in store! Among the film, a lot of scenes touch the deepest lay of human’s heart but also a great number of plots arouse human’s anger. Because people have different opinions about the same scene, it will touch off various reflections. During the essay, I express my opinion about various scenes, words and performances. At the end of the essay, I summarize the influence of disaster film and what should human beings to think and what should human beings to do after experiencing the disaster.Ⅱ. The Introduction of Disaster FilmWith the development of technology, people have higher and higher capacity of using and transforming nature. Of course, nature really not allows us to be trampled upon at certain corner. Once these disasters are occurred, the civilization which human being proud becomes fragile. Every resists the happening of disaster, but it doesn’t mean that we should evade thinking of disaster. Disaster is the by-produce of thinking. Disaster film means that director uses the special technology to enlarge the affect of disasters----- earthquake, flood, hurricane, volcanic eruption----and make characters in the movie experience the real disaster to tell us the punishment which is brought by the nature and the humanity during the process of escaping the disaster. 2012 is a typical disaster film, which takes the process of escaping of Jackson Curtis’s families as clue. They meet with many warm-hearted people to help them escaping from the disaster from New York to China. Along the whole way of escaping, volcano eruption, landslides and ground fissure, we can see the flood submerged the peak of high mountains; the rock-magma dyed the ocean red, and the ground became a sea of fire. Those are our imaginations of the inferno from the Bible. In 2012, we must admire that scenes are sublime and reality is cruel, but from scenes we can dig out touching emotion.Ⅲ. Goodness and Badness of Humanity3.1 Goodness of HumanityThe most touching point is the humanity. In this movie, not only does the goodness of humanity express, but also the badness of humanity. When more people want to get into the Noah’s Ark in order to get a chance of being survivor, most people refuse to open the door. But Dr. Helsmley tries his best to persuade every leader in 46 countries to open the door letting more people to survive. He does not care his behavior will threaten his own life but he just doesn’t want to lose humanity when they fight for each other. During the process of arriving in the China, Sasha sacrifices his own life to insure others land safely. When Curtis’s families arrive at the Noah’s Ark, a Tibetan who participates in building the Noah’s Ark agrees to lead all people getting into the Noah’s Ark after his grandmother’s persuasion although he knows the plan will become more difficult with a large number of people. When they get into the Noah’s Ark with the help of the way of loading animals, Gordon protects Noah from the power of being involved in wheel but the adverse apply force push himself dropped into the wheel. In order to guarantee two sons survived, Yuri pushes one son into the Noah’s Ark but he himself drops into the ocean. Closing to the end of movie, Curtis returns to the hydraulics where flooded with ocean to get rid of the stumbling block with the aim of remedying his mistake and insuring whole people are survived. From the goodness of humanity, disasters make it which underlies the characterless appearance bring out. It makes images of the ordinary taller and taller and reveals fully the true, beauty and kindness of humanity. It’s surprised that people load many rare animals rather than bring more people into the Noah’s Ark. At the same time, when the plan which builds the Noah’s Ark starts, a green card should cost the amount in euros. Outrageous is that, human’life should compare with money in terms of the importance. When Yuri and Curtis’s families get into China, he is taken by China force only because of green card as boarding pass. When many important people are all getting into the Noah’s Ark, Anheuser refuses to accept more people getting to that big boat according his own safe, limited rescores and limited time to survive. When Dr. Helsmley tells president the news which world will be end, and asks Anheuser when they tell the truth to people, Anheuser just answers, “Listen, your job is to figure out when this is going to fall apart. My job is to figure out how to retain some semblance of government after it falls apart”. In order to prevent the public producing the panic and rebellion, the governor lies about the actual situation. From the evidence proving the badness of humanity, some people lose humanity for their own benefit, their selfishness make them forget the essence as human being. When disaster is coming, the essential essence is reflected.Ⅳ. Heroism and Sentimentalism4.1 HeroismWhen disaster is coming, people wish that there is someone appeared to save themselves. Automatically heroism appears. The majority of American films possess little heroism. Not like other disaster films, 2012 doesn’t have a fixed hero. It always has different heroes in different situations. For instance, when Curtis rents a plane but without a professional pilot, Gordon is thought to be a hero to bring Curtis’s family leaving to a big airport. When earthquake happens, Curtis appears to save his families’life. Maybe in that time, Curtis gives a feeling to audience that he is a hero in terms of his families. In the Noah’s Ark, when people’ life is threaten by ocean, Curtis chooses to enter the hydraulics where submerged by ocean to get rid of the block which impedes the door opened. In terms of people in the Noah’s Ark, Curtis can be called hero. In fact, heroes in disaster film are not super, sometimes they are ordinary. They are just the people who lived in the real life, and they are imperfect even sorehead. But because they are not perfect, they are more real and more humanized. Before the disaster is coming, they are still the ordinary, but when they face to the disaster, the potential of them bursts out instantly, and they finish an impossible task in one time. How the ordinary get rid of dread, save them and help others not only reflects the heroism but introduces many survival skills. Although keeping calm added to survival skills doesn’t avoid disaster thoroughly, it still can show the magical effect through movie.4.2 SentimentalismThere is not only heroism but also sentimentalism. When Dr. Helsmley’s father knows that the end of the world is coming, he doesn’t feel fear and he consoles hisson that he and his wife had one hell of a great life and the best part of that is they have one hell of a great kid. In order to make his son finish jobs securely, he says that the ship he takes is a big one so he can probably survive. The most touching point is that Dr.’s father not only thinks his son but also chooses to accompany with his old friend when he knows the coming of the end of the world. His calm to face to death makes me admire. His consolation to his son makes me distressed. His company to his old friend makes me move. Disaster makes the broken kinship connect again. Old Tony called to his son before the disaster is coming although he doesn’t say anything to his son. But the disaster makes Tony realize that he still doesn’t give up off his son and granddaughter. Compared with heroic hero, a worm may be negligible, but its setting is indispensable element in disaster movie. The tiny warmth highlights the movie, and makes the heart feel warm. Whether there is heroism or sentimentalism, social cohesion which overflowed in film or the light of humanity is enough to make up for the preciousness.After watching the disaster film, people cannot only feel exciting but they should look back what they have done at the past time, and what they should do to avoid the disaster happening again. Disaster film touches off human’s deep thinking. Because of that thinking, more and more people begin protecting the earth, the nature and the environment.
