Levi’s, the blue jeans invented by Levi Strauss in 1873, has become one of the world’s most popular clothing items.
In 1853 Strauss sailed to San Francisco to join in a dry-goods business. In 1872 he received a letter from Jacob Davis, a tailor who was one of his regular customer. In his letter, Davis told Strauss about his invention of riveting the pocket corners of work pants to make them stronger. Davis was poor and had no money to file a patent on his invention and offered to go into partnership with Strauss if he would pay the fees. It benefited both of them. So in 1873 the blue jeans were born.
