Vanity FairI recently finished reading the novel "Vanity Fair" by William Makepeace Thackeray. This book is a satirical masterpiece that takes place in 19th-century England and follows the lives of two main characters, Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley. One of the most striking aspects of "Vanity Fair" is its portrayal of the hypocrisy and corruption that existed in English society during that time. Thackeray uses his characters to expose the greed, vanity, and hypocrisy of the upper classes, as well as the harsh realities faced by the lower classes. The character of Becky Sharp is particularly fascinating. She is a strong-willed and cunning woman who uses her intelligence and charm to navigate through the complex social structure of 19th-century England. Becky's character is a stark contrast to Amelia Sedley, who is portrayed as naive and innocent. Amelia's innocence and lack of worldliness make her an easy target for manipulation and exploitation by the more cunning characters in the novel.Throughout the novel, Thackeray explores themes of ambition, greed, and betrayal. The characters in "Vanity Fair"are constantly striving for wealth, power, and social status, often at the expense of their morals and relationships. The novel also highlights the role of women in 19th-century society, showing the challenges and limitations they faced. In conclusion, "Vanity Fair" is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that offers a critical look at 19th-century English society. It is a satirical masterpiece that exposes the hypocrisy and corruption of the upper classes, as well as the harsh realities faced by the lower classes. The novel also explores themes of ambition, greed, and betrayal, and offers a nuanced portrayal of the roles and challenges faced by women in 19th-century society.

The magazine, with its rich history dating back to 1913, shines a spotlight on the lives of the upper crust, celebrities, and fashion trailblazers.
Its photography, led by renowned talents like Annie Leibovitz and Mark Seliger, captures the essence of glamour and elegance, offering a visual feast for the eyes.

"Vanity Fair" is a novel of critical realism. The story describes the noble and extravagant aristocrats, the smelly entrepreneurs, the scoundrel gentry, the parasites that suck the blood of the people to each other, and you fight me. Bebeck SHARP was a smart, delightful girl, but to get into the upper class, to get rid of poverty, and unscrupulous, the dust of fame and fortune made her fall, become vain, greedy, unfriendly. Becky SHARP would have to go to the red carpet to the upper class. In the end, he was stained with himself. In fact, careful meditation, fame and wealth is only a magnificent dust, it uses its gorgeous appearance, puzzled a lot of people, it makes people arrogant, hypocritical, greed, and then eventually to destroy themselves, and so waking time, but found that he did not recognize the fame and wealth, sold friends and relatives, only to understand fame and wealth It's not the whole time of life, but it's late. Vanity wears a gorgeous mask to knock your door open and seduce your vanity with money. You will enter a mud pit involuntarily. The more you get deeper and deeper, you can't pull it out. You will become unwittingly disgusting, with your own interests as the center, but eventually depravity. There are two main characters in the work, Becky, summer and Emilia. The different fortunes of their honor and disgraceconstitute two parallel plot clues, which strung up a colorful picture of British social life. Xia pun is a typical bourgeois adventurer and speculator. Her character is characterized by two faces, three words, one with honey, and one with one's teeth. Her extreme egoism outlook on life, her tenacious and veritable talent, her adventurous spirit and impudent pursuit of fame and wealth, all embodies the characteristics of the bourgeoisie in the period of free competition. She was the daughter of a poor painter who had been disregarded by school and society from an early age. The social status of humiliation and the inconstancy of humiliation twisted her soul, and the desire to climb into the bourgeois upper class made her selfish and cold. Under the influence of the social atmosphere of admiring vanity and pursuit of money, she quickly fell into a wild family and a conspirators, determined to rely on beauty and conspiracy, to squeeze into the upper class, and to hunt for wealth and power. At the first Vanity Fair, her first goal was the bourgeois grand master, Joss. She was a bit of a coquettish, and she was quick to make a simple Jo as drunken. When the two people were very hot, she found the Playboy Rodon may inherit a big legacy, so she took the wind and seduced Roden's elopement, creating a marriage. Then, with her own bright makeup, she drew out a series of romantic events and pulled the dignitaries of general dvelto and Lord dant into their arms. At this moment, she has money, power, status, prestige, high and high. She has become a lady of the most prosperous society, and even the great honor of seeing the supreme king.Rebecca and Amy Leah, a poor man and a rich man. Apart from the huge difference in money, the treatment and personality are quite different. Rebecca cachet honey belly sword, two face three knife, insidious and vicious, ambitious pursuit of fame and fortune, is "money is the only master" thought, making her in the school, in the society are suffering from discrimination, love and distortion of her thoughts. And Amy Leah, the child of a rich family, was spoiled everywhere, and there was hardly any difficulty in her growing up on her way. Because of that, she did not need to work hard to get into the upper class, so she became naive and even silly. Through the introduction of these two characters, the British society is a world that pursues money and glory; it also shows that the pursuit of fame and wealth not only destroys himself, but also destroys others, and it is the so-called "harm to others".The fame and fortune has been washed out and eliminated from generation to generation, but there is still a ambition to try and try it as if life was the only way of life. Thackeray saw through the "mysteries", written in the eyes of the world, with a goose feather pen to write down a page of lamentable people. In order to say goodbye to this drama, the old guy who said the story picked up the box, put up a puppet, and closed the curtain.。

Vanity Fair《名利场》大意及读后感General Idea(大意): Becky comes from a poor family and she was always looking forward to lead the life that the rich had. In order to get that, she at any cost used all means. Finally, she had realized the meaning of the life in the fair. She returned to the reality and be herself again.Feelings and thoughts(读后感): The things that we should seek in the world are something nice, such as love, friendship and so on. Seeking something unwarranted, such as fame and gain, vanity only makes us pay more price. When we treasure what we’ve had and don’t admire the things that do not belong to us, we will be happy.Beautiful Sentences(优美句子):It was a complete mystery. The sun didn’t seem to shine so brightly. I know that I cannot change the past.Just when happiness was coming to us. It’s more important to me than anything in the world. You’re like a baby in arms. You cannot live in this world alone.。
Reading Response to Vanity FairWilliam Makepeace Thackeray, the author of Vanity Fair, was a representative of critical realism in the 19th century. Vanity Fair enjoys a vital position in the English literature history. With lots of truth in detail, Thackeray drew a picture of the society in the firsthalf of 19th century. The subtitle of this novel is "A Novel Without a Hero".It is lack of a hero, but full of mental and chatacter description. It is said that this is not only a novel , this is a society in miniature. It is not just in the united kingdom at that time, it is also in today. In average novels, there are always heroes. But Vanity Fair boasts neither heroes nor decent figures. Conversely, all the characters have obvious shortcomings.Under Thackery's pen, Dobbin is stupid while Amelia selfish. The perfect person or near-perfect person don't belong to this work.In spite of Dobbin, every character is ugly.People who are mild, kind and clever end up sadly while the selfish, dull and malicious guys live a smooth life. From this point of view, we may ask: what is the value of success? Moreover, since success is momentary, the success ofthe nonenity can never leave a trace in the history. In the stage of Vanity Fair, honest citizens like Dobbin and Amilia suffer from adversity;the shrewd and sophisticated Becky Sharp getsbuckets of money unscrupulously, aiming to pretend to be a person of up-class.At the beginning, Becky Sharp doesn't desire to be a socialbutterfly, just wants to be the wife of Amelia's brother Joseph, having a place to settle down, eating mutton, and drinking good wine . She doesn't have any relatives. A life of middle class will satisfy her.She never falls in love with any men she dates with .Becky craves for money and status all through her life, but fails. She will not gain happiness even if she realized her dream. She used to be a clever and beautiful girl. After being attracted by fame and benefit, she is trapped. Since then she becomes hypocrisy and greedy. She covers her furtive abuse with beautiful, touching and kind words. She could damagingly hurt someone nonchalantly.Behind the mask of "kindness", there is despicableobjective for which she trades her friendship, love, marriage, friendsand even husband. In order to make the way into the "Kingdom of the noble", she puzzles the poor while tarnishing herself. From the beginning to the end, Amelia never give up her dream of marrying the hero she respects. And she finally makes it. However,if a woman can not capture the man's heart, then the marriage is a failure. Her fondness turns out to be one-way. Talking about love, only the man Dobbin is somebody. As the character who impresses me most, Dobbin find his love meaningless after sensing that Amelia is a woman of superficiality and dullness. Dobbin's love for Amelia is remarkable due to its indirectness. He cares little about Becky's hard performance in the Vanity Fair and jeers at her hypocrisy. When Amelia and all the other people praises Becky, he just murmurs" Look at this woman!" When Becky shows her loveto him, his loyalty and love for Amelia is testified to be unshakable. He is the cleverest and clearest man in this novel as well as in our world of the moment.Fame and benefit are purchasable, but they are not the whole of life. If one keep seeking them relentlessly, in return, they will grow into temptation which deteriorate his mind and soul. Without innocence, one will lose himself in greed and hypocrisy.Vanity Fair, a true mirror of life, is the place in which everyone struggles for, dreams for and seeks for nothingness.Nothing can be brought away after one's death. But in this fair, men, drunken and sleepy, still chase with all their force.Vanity Fair is not a woeful tragedy, but a ruthless irony of life.Isn't there a Becky Sharp in every girl's mind.Vanity Fair, a novel without a hero, reaches its exceptional truthby reversing ideal thought of "good people will eventually be rewarded".I like it because it's real.。
The Brief Analysis of Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley Vanity Fair is the most famous and marvelous work of Thackeray’s, which satirizes the downfallen upper class and utilitarian bourgeois upstarts in Britain. In this long novel, Thackeray depicts a comely young woman, Rebecca Sharp, who is smart enough to take advantage of her beauty to climb upward in the Vanity Fair. To make a comparison with Rebecca Sharp, Thackeray also creates another pretty woman, Amelia Sedley, a friend of Sharp’s, who lives a totally different life. As these two women, especially Rebecca Sharp, are the most important characters in the novel, and they have different attitudes toward wealth and fame, so in my article, I’d like to make a brief analysis of the characters of Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley.Rebecca Sharp is the daughter of a deceased drawer and a French dancer. Her parentage is rather poor. It is exactly the poor parentage that makes Rebecca Sharp go through many difficulties in her early age, and makes her decide to join the luxurious upper class so desperately that she is willing to do whatever she can. I have to admit that Rebecca Sharp is really smart and beautiful. Her beauty and keen mind is her capital in the venture of stepping into the upper class. Though she dose not have a prestigious pedigree, she still finds her own way of surviving and succeeding in the society where wealth and fame is highly adored. She makes it by proper utilization of her beauty, sharp observation of people’s mind, accurate words to flatter the noble, as well as wonderful techniques of asking and rejecting a certain demand. In order to step into a comparatively good family, Rebecca Sharp has to make compromise. So when she has heard that Joseph Sedley is single, she makes up her mind to seduce him, even though she has neither known him nor seen him. In her eyes, Joseph Sedley is just a ladder used to climb to an upper level. In this case, she dose not care much about how Joseph Sedley is, but what he is. In the case of aesthetic appreciation, Joseph Sedley is not as decent as Rebecca Sharp. He stammers, and likes to boast. But Rebecca endures his flaws and tries to cater to his topic. It is maybe the first time that Rebecca gets the chance to change her fate, and she is rather a green hand. She chooses Joseph Sedley without deliberation lest she may lose the opportunity. Given by nature, she is definitely good at using her beauty to capture a man. The victim surrenders at the first sight of Rebecca and soon gets captured thoroughly. The seduction is about to succeed, but unfortunately, another man, George Osborne, ruins it. Much as Rebecca, George Osborne is a lady-killer. He is so experienced that he knows clearly what Rebecca is thinking. So her first attempt to raise her social status has failed.Another scene can show that Rebecca has a very sensitive mind. When she has heard of the departure of Joseph Sedley, she immediately knows that it is George who urges him to leave. For only George has the ability to catch her thought, because of his abundant experiences of dealing with women. William Dobbin is so obsessed with Amelia Sedley, so he is unlikely to observe Rebecca so slightly.Mr. Sedley is just a merchant, relatively wealthy, but far less than highlyrespected. On one hand, Rebecca has failed to marry Joseph Sedley. On the other hand, she can not be confined to the Sedleys. She needs a better-off family to reach her satisfaction. So Rebecca takes a position as governess at Queen's Crawley. Before she goes to Quee n’s Crawley, Rebecca Sharp has attracted Sir Pitt Crawley so that she will have a more advantageous position Queen’s Crawley. She is more than a governess at Queen’s Crawley, and even the maid knows that she is likely to be the next Mrs. Crawley. Here is the evidence that Rebecca Sharp is not totally infatuated by wealth and fame. If she is, she should accept Sir Pitt’s proposal so that she can get heritage after Sir Pitt dies. For such girls like Rebecca, love can be discarded for wealth and fame, rather than reverse. So if she falls in love with someone, she really means that, even though she knows that her beloved may be disinherited due to the marriage. It is a genuine coup de foudre for both of Rebecca Sharp and Rawdon Crawley.Rebecca’s life is full of opportunities. At Queen’s Crawley, she encounters another person who can get her position raised, Rawdon’s rich aunt, who is flattered by everybody and sees clearly that Rebecca wants to flatter her. Hearing the first word of Rebecca, she says “Miss Sharp? You are a little sharp. Mind not cut yourself. ” But she soon gives up and likes Rebecca very much, for Rebecca contrives to find out proper words to praise her, no matter when they are talking and what they are talking about. To such old ladies like her, beauty is not the sticking point to get appreciation. Rebecca Sharp is smart enough to see it, so shetimely changes her key emphasis in her daily work. She resort to speaking-rush, a technique used to quickly achieve something by flattering or irritating someone with proper words. Nobody feels easy to resist compliment, and Rawdon’s rich aunt is no exception. So she decides to take Rebecca to London.Rebecca knows she can never step into the upper class unless she leaves the countryside. So she instantaneously accepts the old lady’s invitation and moves to London. She is surely to be put into an important position in the house, but she secretly marries Rawdon Crawley, which infuriates old lady Crawley, for she does not want a governess to be a member of her family. It is the turning point for Rebecca Sharp. After the marriage, she must make a living by her own, not rely on someone. It is hard to say whether it is good for her or bad for her. Her life will be much more difficult, of which I am quite sure, but at the same time, she can join the upper class entitled Mrs. Crawley, not merely as the maidservant of the Crawleys. Every coin has two sides. The new couple loses their source of income, so they must find a way to make money to cover their expenditure of being people of quality. Based on her talent, Rebecca soon finds another prey, the Lord Steyne. As a member of British aristocracy, Lord Steyne has more privileges than Joseph Sedley and Sir Pitt Crawley. He is much more qualified than any other person as a deposit book and a ladder to the upper class. Her seduction goes smoothly until Rawdon finds they are not innocent. After that night, Rawdon is convinced that wealth and fame means more to her than him or her son whom she has always hated. He refuses to see her again and takes a post inCoventry Island, where he dies of yellow fever. Lord Steyne also loathes her. She finds nobody to rely on.The ending for Rebecca Sharp is tragic, but we like this ending. Finally Rebecca loses everything which she has contrived for lifetime, and completely loses the chance to enter the Vanity Fair by relying on the noble. She is born poor, and her intention to get wealth and fame is put to an end with nothing. Frankly speaking, Rebecca has a sincere desire of amendment. But what we loathe is the method she resorts to. In the society where pedigree is highly emphasized, the poor little girl can never achieve her goal in a normal way. So the only way out is using her beauty, just like prostitutes using their bodies. It is her destiny that makes Rebecca fail, though she succeeds in ensnaring Joseph Sedley at last.Another main character in this long novel is Amelia Sedley, the best friend of Rebecca Sharp. She represents a totally different kind of people, who believes in love and is willing to sacrifice everything for pure love. But unfortunately, she goes to another extreme. In this novel, we can see, George Osborne is not faithful to Amelia Sedley. The reason why he marries her resolutely is that he disdains his father for the betrayal of Mr. Sedley. He uses money Dobbin gives him to buy Amelia a present to buy him a brooch, and even slips a note into Rebecca’s hand and urges her to elope. When she has heard of her husband’s unforgivable behavior, she still believes that George loves her. She is too innocent to reach those playboys hearts.Amelia’s adherence to the love between herself and George has gone too far this time and later been proved meaningless. Many years after George has died in Waterloo, Amelia still believes that he is faithful and refuses Dobbin for many times. Ironically, it is Rebecca who finally jolts Amelia into the recognition that George, her first love, is not worthy. She uses her own slatternly behavior to help Amelia quit living in the past. It maybe the only right thing Rebecca does in the novel.Amelia is kind, undoubtedly, but her kindness is not always come with good results. She has suffered a lot and makes Dobbin, the only good man in the novel, also suffer a lot. She prefers to love the photo of George rather than show any affection to Dobbin. She may live a happier and easier life if she timely gets over the grief and accepts Dobbin. She can not forget any man she has loved, while Rebecca can easily forget any man she used to love.By the way, Amelia’s life is better off at last, which indicates that the kind-hearted will receive good blessings.Vanity Fair is a great novel, and Thackeray is definitely good at composing his work in the parallel structure. By the comparison between Rebecca Sharp and Amelia Sedley, we can see the cruelty of the wealth-and-fame oriented society. And in order to reach the upper class and enjoy the luxurious life, different people resorts to different methods. How to distinguish flattering person like Rebecca and how to keep one’s personality is what we should learn from this novel.。
