一个圣诞节的回忆

请设想一下二十多年前一个十一月的早晨，一个白发剪得短短的妇人站在窗口，大声说：“这是做水果蛋糕的好天气！巴迪，去把我们的车推来，我们要烤三十个水果蛋糕呢。”
那时我七岁，她六十光景，我们是很远的表亲。从我记事起，我俩就住在一起。她叫我“巴迪”，为了纪念她以前最好的朋友。那个巴迪早死了，当时她自己还是个孩子。她现在仍是个孩子。
我们把童车推进山核桃树丛。童车是我出生时买的，快散了，轮子摇来摆去，像醉鬼的腿。奎尼是我们养的一条小狗，她挺过了一场瘟疫和两次响尾蛇的噬咬，现在一路小跑跟在小车旁。
三个小时后我们回到厨房，把拉回家的满满一车风吹自落的山核桃的壳剥去。欢快的裂壳声像是微弱的雷鸣，核桃肉散发着甜美的香气。奎尼求我们给她点尝尝，我的朋友时不时偷偷给她一点，但我俩是绝对不可以吃的，“这些山核桃还不见得够做三十个水果蛋糕呢。”明月高照，小车空了，碗满满的。
第二天，我最喜欢的事开始了：大采购。樱桃，柑橘，香草，葡萄干，威士忌，大量的面粉和黄油……嗬，简直要一匹小马才能把车拉回家。我们没钱，但每年总能用尽各种办法，筹到一笔水果蛋糕基金：卖破烂，卖摘来的一桶桶黑莓、一罐罐自制的果酱、苹果冻，为葬礼和婚礼采集鲜花。
黑炉子加足了煤和柴火，烧得像一只发光的南瓜。打蛋器旋转着，调羹在一碗碗黄油和糖里搅动，香草让空气变得甜甜的，姜又增加了香味。厨房里浓香扑鼻，弥漫到整幢屋子。四天后，大功告成，三十只蛋糕放在窗台、搁板上晾着。
蛋糕给谁呢？朋友呗。不一定是邻近的，大半倒是只见过一次，甚至素未谋面的，我们喜欢的朋友。例如罗斯福总统，一年来镇上两次的小个子磨刀人，帕克（班车司机，他每天在尘土飞扬中嗖地一声驶过时和我们互相挥手招呼）。是不是因为我的朋友太害羞了，才把这些陌生人当作真正的朋友？我想是的。我们的纪念册里有用白宫信笺写的答谢信，有磨刀人寄来的一分钱明信片——它们让我们觉得和外面丰富的世界联系在一起。
厨房空了，蛋糕都送走了，我的朋友要庆祝一下——还剩下一点威士忌。奎尼分到满满一勺，倒在她的咖啡碗里（她喜欢菊苣香的浓咖啡），我们平分剩下的。奎尼躺在地上打滚，爪子在空中乱抓。我身子里热烘烘地冒火星，像快要烧成灰烬的木柴。我的朋友围着炉子跳圆舞曲，两只手提起那身蹩脚的花布连衣裙的裙边，就像是舞会上穿的礼服，唱着“指给我回家的路”。
下一个任务就是准备礼物。我想给她买整整一磅樱桃巧克力，不过，我给她做了只风筝。她希望给我一辆自行车，不过，我肯定她也是给我做风筝——和去年一样，和前年也一样。我们又凑了五分钱给奎尼买了一大根还有余肉可啃的牛骨头，用彩纸包起来，高高地挂在圣诞树顶上一颗银星边。奎尼知道那是牛肉骨头，馋得坐在树下呆望着，该睡了还不肯走。我的兴奋不亚于她，踢被子，翻枕头，就像是热得不可开交的夏天夜晚。我的朋友手持蜡烛坐到我的床沿：“我一点也睡不着，心像兔子一样乱跳。你说罗斯福夫人会在晚餐时端上我们的水果蛋糕吗？”我俩在床上挤作一团，她在我的手心里写“我爱你”。“你的手比以前大了。我想我大概不愿你长大。你长大了，我们还能继续当朋友吗？”我说我们永远是朋友。
这是我们一起过的最后一个圣诞节。
我上了军事学校。我也有了新家，但那不算数。我的朋友在哪里，哪里才是我的家，而我再也没回去过。

C Terrafugia Inc. said Monday that its new flying car has completed its first flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of selling the flying car within the next year. The vehicle —named the Transition – has two seats, four wheels and wings that fold up so it can be driven like a car. The Transition, which flew at 1,400 feet for eight minutes last month, can reach around 70 miles per hour on the road and 115 in the air. It flies using a 23-gallon tank of gas and burns 5 gallons per hour in the air. On the ground, it gets 35 miles per gallon. Around 100 people have already put down a $10,000 deposit to get a Transition when they go on sale, and those numbers will likely rise after Terrafugia introduces the Transition to the public later this week at the New York Auto Show. But don’t expect it to show up in too many driveways. It’s expected to cost $279,000. And it won’t help if you’re stuck in traffic. The car needs a runway. Inventors have been trying to make flying cars since the 1930s, according to Robert Mann, an airline industry expert. But Mann thinks Terrafugia has come closer than anyone to making the flying car a reality. The government has already permitted the company to use special materials to make it easier for the vehicle to fly. The Transition is now going through crash tests to make sure it meets federal safety standards. Mann said Terraf ugia was helped by the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision five years ago to create a separate set of standards for light sport aircraft, which are lower than those for pilots of larger planes.
