Chapter one The emergency of the cinema as an institution1.1 What is film?● A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a series of still or moving images. It isproduced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry.●Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and,in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating –or indoctrinating –citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication.●The cinema, wrote the documentarist Paul Rotha in the 1930s, 'is the great unresolvedequation between art and industry'.New Words●moving pictures/motion pictures, film, movie电影●Celluloid: 赛璐珞;电影胶片●Kinetoscope : 活动电影放映机●Nickelodeon:镍币影院●Phonograph:留声机●Photography:照相术,摄影术●Shot: (电影)镜头●genre: 类型1.2 Periods of Cinema● 1 The Early Years, Pre-cinema● 2 The silent era (1895-1927)● 3 the sound era (1927-)1.3 Technological development● 1. One of the first technological precursors(前驱) of film is the pinhole camera(针孔照相机), followed by the more advanced camera obscura(照相暗盒).● 2. 1888,first motion-picture camera, kinetoscope, developed in Thomas Edison‘slaboratory.● 3. 1895, Lumiere brothers start projecting motion pictures in a Paris café.● 4. 1905-10 , Era of the nickelodeon, movie theaters that charged a nickel for admission.● 5.During late 1927, Warners released The Jazz Singer, which was mostly silent butcontained what is generally regarded as the first synchronized dialogue (and singing) in a feature film;1.4 Society development●1) Movies became a cult of mass culture.●The movies, like baseball, have become something of a national pastime.●Movie palaces built in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s resemble gigantic cathedrals.●Roxy,6200 seats , the world‘s largest theater, described itself as ―the Cathedral of themotion picture.‖●By the 1920s the cinema had definitely become an institution – an integral feature of theexperience of being an American in the twentieth century.●2) Cinema as an economic institution– to make money.●A): It is a complex organization of producers, distributors, and exhibitor.●B): It also established various systems , such as star system and the genresystem.●3) Social institution●It is a means of providing an appropriate form of social contact for members in the worldof mass culture. It became an even more appropriate and more modern forum for leisure-time communal activity than these social institutions such as churches, dance hall, social clubs, and saloons, which belong, more properly, to an earlier, preindustrial culture.●4) Capturing Time●photography and motion pictures changed traditional notions of time.●Traditional notions of space and distance, which were based in part on how long it took toget from one place to another, were redefined by the virtually instantaneous transmission of information from one geographical location to another. Photographs, unlike sketches, paintings, and sculptures, record events instantaneously before they vanish into memory.●Thus the present and the past are rescued from the passage of time, lifted out of itscontinuous ongoing process, and frozen for all to see. Motion pictures record and reproduce the flow of time in a way that had previously been impossible, even in photography.●5) Peepshows versus Projectors: exhibitors wanted to maximize their profits andperfected projection devices to show films to a mass audience in 1895.●6)Mass production and Mass Consumption- a public spectacle:●With the advent of projection in 1895-1896, the motion pictures became the ultimate formof mass consumption.●7) Middle- Class Amusements:From ―showing‖ to ―telling‖●8)The Nickelodeon: A Collective Experience●a) Paid one nickel(5 cents) to get in, cheap;●b) Different backgrounds people shared a collective experience by watching the samepeople;●c) No sound, people can understand it by watching pictures;●d) Teach immigrants to understand America.●9) cleaning up: the Benefits of Respectability●Producers uplifted the movie contents to meet the middle-class tastes. Spectacle and Storytelling:From Porter to Griffith●1) The camera as recorder●After 1908,American cinema becomes more and more intent on the perfection ofnarrative skills.● D.W. Griffith: The Birth of a Nation(1915)●Edwin S. Porter: The Life of an American Fireman (1903)●2)the Camera as Narrator●The primitive cinema tells stories directly without stop. The cinema of Griffith(and later)actively narrates events by using parallel editing.●Exhibiting action(showing)exhibiting psychology(narration)●3)The “Feature” F ilm(故事片)●As the narratives become more complex, one-reel(1000-foot, ten-to-fifteen minute)format of the motion pictures were replaced by multiple-reel ―feature‖ films.●The Birth of a Nation(12 reels,1915) changed the nature of American film production andexhibition. It marks the end of nickelodeon theaters and introduces the luxurious movie palaces. An Evolving Institution●Peepshow Kinetoscope(1891/1893) - nickelodeons (1895/1896)–feature films(1911) –movie palaces(1913) –●New nickelodeons(1960S)Edison Projecting Kinetoscope ,1913●Edison next had his staff work on a Projecting Kinetoscope that showed moving pictureson a screen. Starting in 1897, the Projecting Kinetoscope was used in small movie houses where groups of about 100 people could see the movies lasting about 16 minutes. They usually paid five cents, a nickel, to see the show, and by 1905 the theatres became known as Nickelodeons.Modern Times (1936)Modern Times is a 1936 comedy film by Charlie Chaplin that has his iconic Little Tramp character struggling to survive in the modern, industrialized world.―a story of industry, of individual enterprise, and humanity crusading in the pursuit of happiness.‖The film is a comment on the desperate employment and fiscal conditions many people faced during the Great Depression, conditions created, in Chaplin's view, by the efficiencies of modern industrialization.Chaplin, who was always very attentive to the economic and social problems of his day, declared in 1931: ‗unemployment, that‘s the key q uestion. Machines should do improve the well-being of humanity, instead of causing tragedy and unemployment‖.In the beginning of the film; the workers are portrayed as sheep, no individuality, merely cogs in the economic system.Chaplin and Goddard are to be seen thus as black sheep, being non-conformant.The clock clearly shows that every second counts, reflected in Franklins' quote 'Time is money'.Modern Times is full of images of huge carnivorous machines, conveyor belts, gears, dials and switches. These images show an oppressive and impersonal nature of technology. The assembly line, for example, which requires a worker to know only one piece of the puzzle, thus making the worker replaceable, is portrayed in this movie as mind numbing and tedious. Even after the work is finished, the man continues the physical motions until he zones back into reality. The entrepreneurs try all kinds of ways to exploit the workers. In order to cut the cost ofneedless ―lunch time‖, the owner of the factory agrees t o a demonstration of the automated lunch feeder. The failure of the feeding machine and the disastrous result show the negative side of machine. The hilarious scene is an irony to the capitalist. What is a theme?A theme is the central or dominating idea in a work. No proper theme is simply a subject or an activity. What happens is the plot; what the happenings add up to is the theme. The theme of a story is whatever general idea or insight the entire story reveals.Major themes1.Workers are machinized and lose their individuality , becoming a part of themachine.2. people are suffering jobless, hunger and homeless in the Great Depression. The difficulty of life during those years, food and jobs were hard to come by, and as Chaplin shows us jail was preferable to the hectic and dangerous city streets. At the time of the great depression Americans had to fight for what little they had, and as the movie showed many people went hungry.3. The American dream is just a slim hope for the common people.Chapter three Stars and culture3.1 The Star System●The star system was the method of creating, promoting and exploiting moviestars in Classical Hollywood cinema. Studios would select promising young actors and glamorise and create personas for them, often inventing new names and even new backgrounds.●The star system put an emphasis on the image rather than the acting. Women wereexpected to behave like ladies, and were never to leave the house without makeup and stylish clothes. Men were expected to be seen in public as gentlemen. Morality clauses were a common part of actors' studio contracts.3.2 The Early Years: The first star●Florence Lawrence (1886 – 1938) was the first film performer to be identified on screenand the first movie star. was a Canadian silent film actress. She is often referred to as "The First Movie Star." When she was popular, she was known as "The Biograph Girl," "The IMP (Independent Motion Picture Company ) Girl," and "The Girl of a Thousand Faces." Lawrence appeared in more than 270 films for various motion picture companies.Charlie Chaplin(1889 –1977)Charlie Chaplin(1889 –1977), was an English comic actor, film director and composer best known for his work during the silent film era. He became the most famous film star in the world before the end of World War I. In 1999, the American Film Institute(AFI) ranked Chaplin the 10th greatest male screen legend of all time.●Chaplin used mime, slapstick(闹剧) and other visual comedy routines, and continued wellinto the era of the talkies, though his films decreased in frequency from the end of the 1920s. His most famous role was that of The Tramp(流浪汉). "The Tramp" is a vagrant with the refined manners, clothes, and dignity of a gentleman.●Charles Chaplin combines, in the image of the Tramp, the old-world, aristocratic valuesof Victorian society, and the new-world egalitarianism(平等主义) of the immigrant, whose hunger and homelessness make him the defiant opponent of all arbitrary authority –especially policemen. Thus his costume of derby, dress coat, and cane look back nostalgically to a former elegance. And his concern for proper behavior and social manners identify him with more traditional values.Comments●In 2008, Martin Sieff, in a review of the book Chaplin: A Life, wrote: ― Chaplin was notjust 'big', he was gigantic. ‖●George Bernard Shaw called Chaplin "the only genius to come out of the movieindustry".3.3 Late Victoriamism●American Victorianism: Its values consist of sexual repression and restraint; hard workand an aversion to idleness; a sense of moral orderliness and self-control, discipline, self-confidence, self-sufficiency. The nineteenth- century ideal of womanhood consists: piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. Lillian Gish was regard as the ideal Victorian femininity.Lillian Gish●Lillian Diana Gish (1893 –1995) was an American stage, screen and television actresswhose film acting career spanned 80 years, from 1912 to 1992.●She was a prominent film star of the 1910s and 1920s, particularly associated with thefilms of director D.W. Griffith, including her leading role in Griffith's seminal Birth of a Nation(1915).●Her sound-era film appearances were sporadic, but included memorable roles in thecontroversial western Duel in the Sun(1946) and the offbeat thriller untouchable (1955).The American Film Institute (AFI) named Gish 17th among the greatest female stars of all time. She was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1971, and in 1984 she received an AFI Life Achievement Award.3.4 Late Victorianism●During the 1910s and 1920s, the status of women changed as the American economyshifted from a rural and agricultural to an urban and industrial base. More and more women got jobs as typewriters /secretaries, clerks and salesgirls. These economic changes produced profound social changes, resulting in greater freedom for women. Movie stars function changed to adapt this transformations.Mary Pickford●Mary Pickford(April 8, 1892 –May 29, 1979) was a Canadian-born motion pictureactress, co-founder of the film studio United Artists and one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Known as "America's Sweetheart,""Little Mary" and "The girl with the curls".Douglas Fairbanks●Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. (May 23, 1883 – December 12, 1939) was an American actor, screenwriter, director and producer. He was best known for his swashbuckling roles in silent films such as The Thief of Bagdad, Robin Hood, and The Mark of Zorro.●An astute businessman, Fairbanks was a founding member of United Artists. Fairbankswas also a founding member of The Motion Picture Academy and hosted the first OscarsCeremony in 1929. With his marriage to Mary Pickford in 1920, the couple became Hollywood royalty with Fairbanks constantly referred to as "The King of Hollywood", a nickname later passed on to actor Clark Gable.3.5 Stars of the 1920s●The Jazz Age: sexual liberation, the woman‘s suffrage movement:●Rudolph Valentino, Clara Bow, Greta Garbo●unconventional, sexual liberated young women of the roaring twenties defended theiractions in terms of a modern morality.Stars of the 1920s: Having “It”●Sexuality now dominates the screen can be seen in the emergence of a novel criterion forstardom –the possession of ―It‖.●Elinor Glyn‘s 1926 novel call It, was adapted for the screen and starred thequintessential Hollywood flapper – the pretty, sexy, fun-loving, impudent, worldly-wise Clara Bow. Glyn defined ―It‖ as ―an inner magic, an animal magnetism,‖ and declared Bow to be the ―It Girl.‖Clara Bow●Clara Gordon Bow (July 29, 1905 – September 27, 1965) was an American actress bornand raised in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, who rose to stardom in the silent film era of the 1920s. Her high spirits and acting artistry made her global fame. Bow came to personify the roaring twenties and is described as its leading sex symbol.Rudolph Valentino- Latin Lover●Rudolph Valentino (May 6, 1895 – August 23, 1926) was an Italian actor, and early popicon. Known as the "Latin Lover", he was one of the most popular international stars of the 1920s, and one of the most recognized stars of the silent film era. He is best known for his work in The Sheik and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. His death at age 31 caused mass hysteria among his female fans, propelling him into icon status.●The sexuality of Valentino, Garbo, and other foreign-born screen idols of the 1920sdiffers in nature from the wildness of American youth epitomized by Bow. American men hated Valentino almost as passionately as American women loved him.Greta GarboFrom Divinity to Humanity●Greta Lovisa Gustafsson(1905 –1990), better known as Greta Garbo, was a notedSwedish actress and recluse. She was a major star in the United States during the silent film era and the Golden Age of Hollywood. In 1999, the American Film Institute (AFI) ranked Garbo fifth on their list of greatest female stars of all time.●With the down-to-earth realism associated with the coming of sound, with the socialupheavals introduced by the stock market crash and the Depression, and with the redefinition of American notions of individualism brought about by the New Deal, the aloof, aristocratic nature of silent screen stars came under increasing criticism and attack. The American audience want their stars to more human and more accessible.●Garbo: a femme fatale(deadly woman) 蛇蝎美人—Garbo Talks –Garbo Laughs(more accessible)The Appearance of Sound Films● A sound film is a motion picture with synchronized sound, or sound technologicallycoupled to image, as opposed to a silent film. Distinct vocal styles provide the basis of stardom for many performers, belonging to the working class. American audiences fall in love with burly, homely, hard-working, proletarian tough guys, homespun humorous stars and the adorable little ―orphan‖ S hirley Temple.Shirley Temple●Shirley Jane Temple (born April 23, 1928) is an American film and television actress, singer, dancer, autobiographer, and former U.S. Ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia. She began her film career in 1932 at the age of three, and in 1934, skyrocketed to superstardom in Bright Eyes, a feature film designed specifically for her talents. She received a special Academy Award in February 1935.Clark Gable:Populist HeroWilliam Clark Gable(1901 –1960) was an American film actor, nicknamed ―The King of Hollywood‖ in his heyday. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Gable seventh among the greatest male stars of all time.●Gable‗s most famous role was Rhett Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic film Gone with theWind, in which he starred with Vivien Leigh. His performance earned him his third nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor; he won for It Happened One Night (一夜风流,1934) and was also nominated for Mutiny on the Bounty(叛舰喋血记1935).3.7 Sex,Censorship, and Star Images●In 1934, the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America reinstituted theProduction Code to against the depictions of crime and violence, sexual themes such as adultery, scenes of passion, seduction or rape, sexual perversion, and miscegenation. The code handcuffed the rampant sexuality of early 1930s. It turned sex comedy into screwball comedy(神经喜剧).●Sexual self-censorship drives sex underground during the war years and finally explodesin the resexualization of Hollywood that takes place in the postwar years in film noir and in films with more sexually explicit themes and with sexier stars.Katharine Hepburn (AFI‘s 1st)Selected works●The African Queen (1951)●Suddenly, Last Summer (1959)●Long Day's Journey into Night (1962)●Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967)●The Lion in Winter (1968)●On Golden Pond (1981)●The Philadelphia Story (1939–1941King Kong(1933)Technical Achievements●This low-rent monster movie pointed the way toward the current era of special effects, science fiction, cataclysmic destruction, and nonstop shocks. "King Kong" is the father of "Jurassic Park," the "Alien" movies and countless other stories in which heroes are terrified by skillful special effects. Despite its various deficiencies and occasionally antiquated style, King Kong remains not only a milestone of movie-making, but a magical experience. Watching King Kong reminds us of what movies once were and what they have the potential to be, and that's something that Jurassic Park will never be able to do. Stop Motion●Stop motion (定格动画)(also known as stop action) is an animation technique to make aphysically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning.Discrimination against Women●1) Jack‘s words (14‘50, cd1)--They are nuisance.--You‘ve got in the way already.●2) Ann is just a tool to make money.(9‘35)The director wants Ann in his film to attract the public●3)Ann is depicted in the movie as the weak.Ann‘s screaming; What killed King Kong?●King Kong himself,●Love for Ann,●Human,●Greed,●Science and technology/ modern weapon●Discrimination against King Kong;●Curiosity;Metaphors for Kong●1) Human vs NatureThe scene with Kong grasping the top of the Empire State Building with one hand while swiping futilely at the attacking bi-planes with the other makes a statement about man‘s indiscriminate(不加区别的) destruction of nature on the path to technological mastery. Kong was king of Skull Island, but, on Manhattan Island, he is a rampaging nuisance to be dealt with. It's not so much beauty that killed the beast, as it is the march of progress. In the world of man, a mythical beast like Kong has no room to survive.●2) Racist conceptions of blacks often depict them as subhuman, ape or monkey-like.In the movie, Kong stands for the black man brought in chains from a dark island (full of murderous primitive pagans) and with a penchant(嗜好) for skinny white blondes. (racism)shotA shot is a continuous strip of motion picture film, created of a series of frames, that runsfor an uninterrupted period of time. Shots are generally filmed with a single camera and can be of any duration. A shot in production, defined by the beginning and end of acapturing process, is equivalent to a clip in editing, defined as the continuous footage between two edits. Frames, shots, clips, scenes, and sequences form a hierarchy of units fundamental to many tasks in the creation of moving-image works. Some Film Termsediting, cutting 剪接Straight-on angle 平视镜头The high angle 俯视镜头The low angle 仰视镜头medium close-up 中景特写镜头Extreme long shot 大远景/大全景mise-en-scene 舞台布景slow motion 慢镜头special effects 特技cutIn film and video editing, a cut is an abrupt, but usually trivial film transition from one sequence to another. Hollywood's classic film noir period is generally regarded as stretching from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key black-and-white visual style. Many of the prototypical stories and much of the attitude of classic noir derive from the hardboiled school(冷硬派)of crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Depression.Characteristics of Film Noir1.Visual: The low-key lighting schemes of many classic film noirs are associated withstark light/dark contrasts and dramatic shadow patterning;2.Structure: Film noirs tend to have unusually convoluted story lines, frequentlyinvolving flashbacks and other editing techniques that disrupt and sometimes obscure the narrative sequence;3.Subject matter: Crime, usually murder, is an element of almost all film noirs; inaddition to standard-issue greed, jealousy is frequently the criminal motivation;4.Tone: Film noir is often described as essentially pessimistic; Why did film noir appear?1. Film noir…s aesthetics are deeply influenced by German Expressionis m(表现主义),an artistic movement of the 1910s and 1920s that involved theater, photography, painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as cinema. The opportunities offered by the booming Hollywood film industry and, later, the threat of growing Nazi power led to the emigration of many important film artists working in Germany. They like to use chiaroscuro(明暗对照法) lighting and were interested in crime.2. The primary literary influence on film noir was the hardboiled school ofAmerican detective and crime fiction.3. War had changed American‟s thinking. Film noir deals with a uniquely Americanexperience of wartime and postwar despair and alienation as a disoriented(迷失的) America readjusts to a new social and political reality.HollywoodHollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, United States situated west-northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Due to its fame and cultural identity asthe historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word Hollywood is often used as a synonym of American cinema.HistoryIn 1853, one adobe hut(泥砖砌成的房屋) stood in Nopalera, named for the Mexican Nopal(仙人掌属植物) cactus indigenous to the area. By 1870, an agricultural community flourished in the area with thriving crops of many common and exotic varieties. Soon thereafter, land speculation led to subdivision of the large plots and an influx of homeowners. In 1886, H. H. Wilcox bought an area of Rancho La Brea that his wife then christened "Hollywood."Within a few years, Wilcox had devised a grid plan for his new community, paved Prospect Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard) for his main street and was selling large residential lots to wealthy Midwesterners looking to build homes so they could "winter in California."In 1911, the Nestor Company opened Hollywood's first film studio in an old tavern on the corner of Sunset and Gower. Not long thereafter Cecil B. DeMille and D. W.Griffith began making movies in the area drawn to the community for its open space and moderate climate. In the 1960s, music recording studios and offices began moving to Hollywood an offshoot(衍生物) of the nightclubs further west on Sunset Boulevard. Other businesses, however, continued to migrate to different parts of the city.Hollywood today is a diverse, vital, and active community striving to preserve the elegant buildings from its past.Walk of FameThe Hollywood Walk of Fame consists of more than 2,400 five-pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalks along fifteen blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street in Hollywood, California. The stars are permanent public monuments to achievement in the entertainment industry, bearing the names of a mix of actors, musicians, directors, producers, musical and theatrical groups, fictional characters, and others. The Walk of Fame is administered by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. The celebrity with the most "stars" on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is singing-cowboy Gene Autry, who earned five different "stars," one in each of the above categories. His five stars are located at 6644, 6520, 6384, 6667, and 7000 Hollywood Boulevard.Dead Poets Society(1989)Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film distributed by Touchstone Pictures.•Academy awards:•Won: Best Original Screenplay (Tom Schulman)•Nominated: Best Actor in a Leading Role•Nominated: Director (Peter Weir)•Nominated: Best Picture。

Hope, Free and Friends.
I have to remind myself that some birds ain’t meant to be caged我不得不提醒我自己,有些鸟是不能被关在笼子里的Their feathers are just too bright它们的羽毛太漂亮了And when they fly away, the part of you knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice当它们飞走的时候,你会觉得把它们关起来欣赏是一种罪恶But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone但是,它们不在了定会让你感到寂寞I guess I just miss my friend可能我只是想念我的朋友。
想到了所谓的“精英阶层”,想到了“hope, the thing that may be terrible or good.”,想到了“free,自由”,当然,还有“friends,朋友”。

I realized that it was not my marriage that was broken, I just didn't know how to make it我发现不是我的婚姻破碎,是我根本不懂如何维持婚姻。
“Although love is communicated in a number of ways, our words often reflect the condition of our hearts.虽然爱的沟通方式有很多,我们的言辞却往往反映出我们的心态”“And do not just follow your heart, man, because your heart can be deceived. But you gotta lead your heart.
